The Nats’ updated all-time stats leaders

Nov 17, 2015, 6:00 AM EDT

USA Today Sports Images

This may have been a disappointing season for the Nationals as a whole, but for a few individuals it was anything but. Bryce Harper and Max Scherzer, in particular, put together arguably the single-best offensive and pitching seasons we’ve seen since baseball returned to D.C.

And even those who didn’t put up historic numbers in 2015 still put up numbers that go into the franchise’s ever-growing record book. The Nationals have now played 11 seasons here in town, and there are several players who have now been here for a good chunk of that time.

In that spirit, we present one of our favorite annual pieces: The updated Nats all-time stats leaderboards. It’s always fun to scan these lists, see which current players have moved up and which long-forgotten players still hold their places as the best this team has offered in more than a decade of baseball.

There have now been 277 players to wear the curly W cap, though it remains a bit surprising that only 39 have compiled at least 500 plate appearances and only 54 have totaled at least 75 innings pitched. It probably speaks to the significant turnover of the Nationals’ roster during the early years and now the impressive continuity they’ve sustained in more recent years.

Whether you’ve been following them since Opening Day 2005 or only joined the fun a decade in, hopefully you’ll enjoy this tip down memory lane, 11 seasons of Nationals baseball portrayed in these statistical categories…

Can Strasburg put together 17 wins to jump to the top?

    • ArVAFan - Nov 17, 2015 at 8:04 AM

Not out of the realm of possibility, but he’d need (a) good infield defense, (b) run support and (c) luck. Mr. Rizzo may cook up the first two on the hot stove, but the baseball gods will need to provide the third.

  2. natsfan1a - Nov 17, 2015 at 8:04 AM

Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick (for my Chicago/Denver/California baseball buddy).

(Miss Nancy says) I see Meat Hook, and Wil (who?), and Ryan (church on Sunday), and Guuuuz, among others. Oh, and of course Livo!

    • natsfan1a - Nov 17, 2015 at 8:04 AM

      Oh, and Chief.

Okay, I think I’m done now.

  3. ArVAFan - Nov 17, 2015 at 8:39 AM

Mark, thank you for pulling this together.

It’s amazing to see how fast Bryce has moved up the leader boards–and how far he has to go on some to catch Ryan.

And wouldn’t it be funny if Sean Burnett manages to revive his career, and add to his stats this year?

    • Section 222 - Nov 17, 2015 at 2:11 PM

I know. Age 22, 4 years in the majors, and already up at the top on these leaderboards.

  4. Eugene in Oregon - Nov 17, 2015 at 8:57 AM

Nick Johnson, despite all his injuries, still 10th in games played? That says something, but not sure what.

Are the outliers you’ve listed in some categories just interesting/amusing/telling outliers? Or do they represent the bottom of the list of qualifiers?

    • Mark Zuckerman - Nov 17, 2015 at 9:55 AM

Those are the last-place players in each of those rate-based stats. Figure it’s interesting to see the other end of the spectrum.

      • Eugene in Oregon - Nov 17, 2015 at 12:42 PM

        Thanks.

      • trfwans - Nov 17, 2015 at 1:12 PM

Which serves to reveal the bitter truth about a couple of “fan favorites”. Michael A Taylor is not ready yet, and Tyler Moore never was.

    • BigHairyChestedGuy - Nov 17, 2015 at 10:01 AM

      Who?

  5. tcostant - Nov 17, 2015 at 9:01 AM

Almost forgot home much Saul Rivera was used.

For Harper to be that high on so many list after almost three years, is amazing. Lifetime contract please!

  6. fpa4356 - Nov 17, 2015 at 9:05 AM

It’s a bit surprising to see that Werth has only 10 more home runs than Danny Espinosa.

  7. npb99 - Nov 17, 2015 at 11:23 AM

I never would have guessed that Ryan Z would be in the top 10 in stolen bases, but not in on-base percentage.

  8. ArVAFan - Nov 17, 2015 at 2:26 PM

From the Nats announcement of the new medical team:

“This will allow the Nationals to hone in on predictive factors to thwart potential injurious situations,”

Here’s a couple to get them started honing in:

    1. No head-first sliding.
    2. Don’t let Jonathan Papelbon pitch.

    • Joe Seamhead - Nov 17, 2015 at 2:56 PM

      Too funny!

  9. veejh - Nov 17, 2015 at 3:41 PM

Jon Rauch….haven’t heard that name in a while. I was a fan.

    • Drew - Nov 17, 2015 at 9:41 PM

I wasn’t a fan of that tattoo on the back of Rauch’s neck. The guy who applied it must have enjoyed the big canvas.

One stat that jumped out at me is that the Chief averaged 28 saves over four years pitching for some bad clubs.

What a fun post! Great to see so many of these names. I will really miss Ian and Jordan.
