Game 118: Nats at Rockies

Aug 18, 2015, 5:12 PM EDT

USA Today Sports Images

It’s been just a bit of rough 48 hours for the Nationals, who since last playing Sunday in San Francisco have been excoriated throughout the baseball world for … well, you name it. Their sub-.500 record. Their struggling lineup. Their under-performing rotation. Their under-fire manager. Their roster-constructing GM.

Tonight in Denver, the Nats get back to work and have an opportunity to respond to all the criticism with a well-played ballgame and perhaps an end to their 6-game losing streak. They’ll attempt to do so with an entirely new-look lineup. Jayson Werth is leading off, with Matt Williams hoping for similar results to 2012, when Werth was coming off a similar wrist injury and wound up setting the table quite well in the top spot. Danny Espinosa is at second base and batting second. Yunel Escobar is hitting cleanup, with Ian Desmond fifth and Ryan Zimmerman sixth.

Jordan Zimmermann, meanwhile, takes the mound seeking his first win since July 11 despite his 3.68 ERA in six starts since.

I’m not in Colorado for this series, but I’ll have some remote analysis for you in the morning. Enjoy the game…

Please don’t embarrass me Nats as this is my first time to Coors Field. Make me proud and start this comeback tonight!

  2. conatsguy - Aug 18, 2015 at 5:27 PM

Going to the game tonite and Thursday. Hope to bring some good mojo to the Nats.

    Hey Veejh-
if your going tonite, the wife and I will be in section 135 Row 32 seats 7&8. Just ask for Joe. I’ll buy you a beer.

Wife cannot attend the Thursday Game, so I have an extra ticket if you need one.

    GYFNG!

    • veejh - Aug 18, 2015 at 5:58 PM

Don’t have tickets for tomorrow yet, but I’ll probably go. Thursday gonna be tough….have to be at work at 5am. Think I’ll watch as much as I can until I have to sleep.

I’m in 236 (club) row 1 seats 9 and 10 with my girl.

      • conatsguy - Aug 18, 2015 at 6:17 PM

Your right above us. Your gonna get foul balls there.. Bring your glove!

      • natsfan1a - Aug 18, 2015 at 7:07 PM

Oh, and you might want to stop by this place before the game and buy a boatload of maneki neko figurines. I bought a bunch of them before the game we attended there. The proprietor kept telling me that the Nats were going to win that day, and they did. I’m just saying. It’s only weird if it doesn’t work. 😉

Wish I could join the Nats fans in Denver. I had hoped to get there, but I just couldn’t make it work schedule-wise.

For what it’s worth, there’s a nice little baseball museum catty-corner to Coors Field (link below). It’s nothing fancy and only takes about an hour to visit, but the focus is the original 8 or 10 ballparks from the first half of the 20th century. Enjoy! http://www.ballparkmuseum.com/museum/

    And GYFNG!

    • Eugene in Oregon - Aug 18, 2015 at 5:47 PM

P.S. – As Nats fans, you may be surprised to see who got the last hit (and what it was) at the old Tigers Stadium before they tore it down.

      • conatsguy - Aug 19, 2015 at 1:10 AM

Did Hondo finish out his career in Detroit? That would be my guess..

    • veejh - Aug 18, 2015 at 6:01 PM

Wish you could join us, too!

      • Eugene in Oregon - Aug 18, 2015 at 6:11 PM

Yeah; I’m going to try to make sure I get to Coors next season.

    • conatsguy - Aug 18, 2015 at 6:20 PM

Hopefully see you here next year Eugene!

    • natsfan1a - Aug 18, 2015 at 6:36 PM

We visited the museum before attending a game with my Chicago-now-Denver baseball a couple of years ago. Definitely worth a look-see. As well, it turned out that the guy who was running the museum that day had moved there from DC, and he used to go to games at RFK and then Nats Park back in the day.

      • natsfan1a - Aug 18, 2015 at 6:37 PM

        make that my baseball *buddy*

(Yeah, it’s time for some food.)

  4. jd - Aug 18, 2015 at 5:44 PM

I guess anything is worth a try but since no one is hitting I guess it doesn’t much matter what the order is. In the real world you would like the guys with highest OBP hitting at the top of the order and you certainly want to move Harper into the cleanup spot but whatever works.

    • Another_Sam - Aug 18, 2015 at 5:59 PM

I’m a broker record: I want Harper to hit lead off.

  5. nattygoats - Aug 18, 2015 at 5:51 PM

Cmon Nats lets get it going. The fact that I have to root for dem Orioles hun is really upsetting me.

  6. sec112 - Aug 18, 2015 at 5:51 PM

Wondering if something unacknowledged is still wrong with Rendon.

    • nattygoats - Aug 18, 2015 at 5:53 PM

just stick with Danny for a while.

    • carlospaula - Aug 18, 2015 at 6:43 PM

Have been thinking the same thing 112….

    • NatsLady - Aug 18, 2015 at 6:51 PM

He looks OK in the field, but he sure isn’t hitting. Not even taking walks.

  7. nattygoats - Aug 18, 2015 at 5:53 PM

Hey if all else fails at least DC knows it has the best QB in the leaque.

    • NatsLady - Aug 18, 2015 at 6:52 PM

      Burn!

      • natsjackinfl - Aug 18, 2015 at 7:09 PM

Another fool who hasn’t read the actual complete interview. Limited to twitter instead of the interview.

  8. veejh - Aug 18, 2015 at 6:02 PM

Off to the game. Time to turn around this season.

  9. sec112 - Aug 18, 2015 at 6:08 PM

Hey – following up on something posted a couple weeks ago by ADCWonk about runs scored in each inning, despite being middle of the pack in team ERA, the Nats are in the bottom 5 in opponents runs scored in the 4th inning. They are also fairly poor in the 8th inning, which is unsurprising. But they are terrible in the 4th inning. Were they just average in that inning, they would leap from middle of the pack in overall ERA to top 5.

The sample size is large enough that I can’t help but wonder if there is something going on that is fixable. And just for fun I checked previous years, and this gap exists every year going back to 2011 (going back only so far as their overall pitching started to be above league average) – each year, their 4th inning numbers are far worse (relative to other teams) than their overall numbers. Is it about pitch calling? What else? I suppose it could be random, but it has been sustained for quite awhile.

    • sec112 - Aug 18, 2015 at 6:27 PM

More I think about it the harder it is to imagine this being random. I guess zmunchkin could figure that out, statistically. I’m going to stop hedging on this and say I think that it’s not random, and that given that it matches McCatty’s tenure (and there have been too many changes to management and the pitching and catching staffs to assign it to the players or managers), I’d guess it has something to do with his preferred approach to the second time through the lineup. It should be at least be evaluated.

      • rlndtln - Aug 18, 2015 at 6:31 PM

MW Slow learner but Danny in the lineup tonite.

    • adcwonk - Aug 18, 2015 at 6:52 PM

      On vacation. Limited internet capabilities.

Before drawing any conclusions, I would check the splits for the 4th inning for the entire league. It may simply be a case that it’s the heart of the order batting for the second time, and maybe that’s a phenomenon with most teams.

      GYFNG!!!

      • sec112 - Aug 18, 2015 at 6:59 PM

Yes – it is a worse inning for all teams for that reason. But the Nats rank among MLB teams for 4th inning runs is far worse than its rank for all innings every year since 2010 basically, each year (except for this year) they are among the best team ERAs, but among the worst 4th inning ERA’s. This year they are second quartile for total ERA and at the very bottom for 4th inning.

  10. scnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 6:48 PM

You get the feeling we throw up a clunker tonight and s**t hits the fan. Let’s hope a curly W sneaks up on the good guys tonight.

    • scnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 6:49 PM

And sorry Mark, hope that wasn’t inappropriate

  11. natsfan1a - Aug 18, 2015 at 7:09 PM

sc, I don’t think it was, but I’m not Mark, either. I’ll be rooting for no clunker and nothing hitting the fan. Hoping to see a happy game results email tomorrow. (Please please please.)

  12. senators69 - Aug 18, 2015 at 7:37 PM

Werth leading off — a topic discussed here and on the radio about a week ago. Happening. Hope it works!

Also, how many of you read the Wash Post story on Scherzer’s issues?
    Here it is: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/nationals-journal/wp/2015/08/17/what-max-scherzer-thinks-is-going-wrong-with-his-pitching-lately/

Max said his problems have to do with his arm position.
Question: Was anyone else bothered by Scherzer’s statement (see below) that it would take him a lot of time to fix!

“It’s going to take some work,” said Scherzer, who starts next on Thursday in Denver. “You just have to create a good habit with it. I’m going to have to throw a ball 10,000 times, between my next start, into a wall just to make sure I have this good habit. That’s what the reality of it is. This isn’t a huge fix, just a time-consuming fix.”

Could this be caused by fatigue? If so, do his practice throws cause further wear and tear?

    I don’t know — that’s why I’m asking.

Max thinks he can fix it and be ready in 5 days, but the quote I copied has me concerned.

    • NatsLady - Aug 18, 2015 at 7:50 PM

Well, at my job I make about 1400 throws. Takes about eight hours, but I’m not throwing continuously. Plenty of people do a lot more. I expect he could make 2000 throws in four hours, and if he’s not going full out but just working on arm angle it probably wouldn’t be stressful.

      • senators69 - Aug 18, 2015 at 8:40 PM

What do you throw, if I may ask!
        Seems like a lot!

      • NatsLady - Aug 18, 2015 at 8:46 PM

        Newspapers.

      • senators69 - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:14 PM

Nats could us you, if you have a fastball that moves ;<)

      • ehay2k - Aug 19, 2015 at 8:18 AM

Unfortunately, Natslady throws cylinders, not spheres. Not sanctioned by MLB.

    • adcwonk - Aug 18, 2015 at 7:52 PM

      I’m guessing he didn’t mean literally 10,000

      • NatsLady - Aug 18, 2015 at 7:57 PM

        I’m guessing he did.

      • adcwonk - Aug 19, 2015 at 11:54 AM

        I’m guessing he did

        10,000 throws in 5 days is arm-suicide

If only he had hit like this in the 2014 NLDS:

    • Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 18, 2015 at 8:29 PM

I remember him and a bryce and Rendon bring the only ones who did anything….

      The others couldn’t hit a beach ball with a 2 by 4.

  14. conatsguy - Aug 18, 2015 at 8:27 PM

Nats are pretty well represented tonight. Lotta red out here. More than last year..

  15. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 18, 2015 at 8:29 PM

    Hopefully, the turnaround begins tonight…

    Sigh

  17. natsdial8 - Aug 18, 2015 at 8:49 PM

When posters mentioned last week to bat Werth leadoff I felt it didn’t make much sense . I still don’t . I would play Robinson and probably lead off Yunel or M Taylor. But hey i give MW credit again for trying something .

  21. dcwx61 - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:01 PM

well, no need to work around their BH

  22. stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:01 PM

How how how do you not walk CarGo? Fool.

    • NatsLady - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:14 PM

Because JZimm has gotten Car-Go out 13 times out of 15.

  23. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:01 PM

What is it with our pitchers not being able to hold leads. Damn…

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:05 PM

Decided that are pitchers just forgot how to pitch.. I bet we have led early in over half the games we lost since the all star game

  24. joemktg - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:01 PM

HOW DO YOU PITCH TO THIS GUY WITH FIRST BASE OPEN????

    smh

    • rlndtln - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:05 PM

When I said we are the dumbest team in baseball the morons came after me.If pitching again and again to Cargo and homer after homer we are fing idiots.

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:07 PM

You trash the Nats every chance you get…. then why do you watch them and bring your misery upon those of who actually enjoy watching them.

      • dcwx61 - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:09 PM

He’s not alone now…most of the media is on board

      • scmargenau - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:11 PM

Because smart people learn from failing. Failing isn’t a problem, it a necessity – u learn and improve. He’s right, our management and players are ignorant, without drive and lazy. I lve the nats, they consume me…but it’s hard to color roses when u are stepping on manure.

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:14 PM

Ignorant and without drive and lazy…

How silly you sound. I want you to go to every player and say that their face and then you will see how lazy and ignorant they are.

I don’t even know why I responded to this ignorance

      • rlndtln - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:17 PM

Ramos lets a fastball down the middle go and then swings at a pitch in that he only could ground to the left side. This is rely sad to watch. We are playing a pathetic team.

      • nattygoats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:18 PM

Your ignorant for continuing a bunch of guys who simply don’t care. Lazy plays. Not thinking about the situation. How stupid can you be to throw a meatball to Cargo? How stupid can you be to continue to run that miserable excuse for an infielder Desmond onto the field every night? And how ignorant can you be to keep thinking this team can turn it around?

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:21 PM

And yet you come here every night and wallow on the misery. Get real excited too…

For them to be so bad, why take the effort and come on here where you are clearly not wanted (and banned before) just to spread your drivel…

Wait, no one else reads or pays attention to you. I made a mistake and gave you a reason to exist. Never again.

      • nattygoats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:24 PM

Who says he’s not wanted? You? And who died and made you king? He has every right to be here. Why don’t you go watch CNN.

      • scmargenau - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:25 PM

Ok look it was not a meatball – Chik pitch fx – high and in. Just crazy talented hitter. I’m not sure what his hot zone is.

      • scmargenau - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:20 PM

Are u watching a different team. They are like zombies. The ignorant as for manager and approach to both hitting and pitching. Everyone but the ultra rosy see this and it’s all over the media from good baseball people. We are 500! Not sure where u r coming from, it’s painfully obvious. I’m not saying they don’t care…but they are Ina funk that bleeds from the top down. Ti ignore this is ignorant

      • scmargenau - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:22 PM

Worst response ever. I’m not natty goats. My comment is spot on. And it irks me cuz I’m a fan. But not an ignorant, blind one.

      • nattygoats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:26 PM

That’s right he’s not me. But he is spot on. This site should be littered with LODers. Because this team is a disgrace and an embarrassment.

      • scmargenau - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:15 PM

        For Mrsb above….

      • manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:24 PM

They refuse to look back. When MW said that I knew a big problem was with us.

That is a totally stupid philosophy.

      • scmargenau - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:27 PM

So true. We need a more progressive thinking manager

      • Joe Seamhead - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:12 PM

I have basically left this blog because of this “fan.”

      • nattygoats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:22 PM

Don’t let the door hit ha.

      • nattygoats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:20 PM

And why do you sit there and watch and then pretend the team is relevant?

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:06 PM

Because MW refuses to look back so he forgot CarGo killed us.

      • rlndtln - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:09 PM

MW is a dumb sad manager.Look how they pitch to Bryce.Who can defend this moron.

      • stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:12 PM

A fair number of us have been complaining about him for two years to one degree or another.

Your problem isn’t your opinions, as I’ve said before. It’s that you’re a brat. Nasty to be around, frankly. Unwelcome. Nothing to contribute. Any further questions, skidmark?

      • NatsLady - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:11 PM

Car-go DIDN’T kill JZimm. Was hitting .133 in 15 PAs, no homers.

      • manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:32 PM

CarGo killing Nats this year. Go with the recent stats.

Most of us thought walk before hand not afterwards.

Not many were thinking pitch to him.

  25. stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:05 PM

  30. stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:09 PM

Meanwhile O’s have nothing going against deGrom. Down 2-0 in fifth with only one hit.

    • Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:11 PM

I mean if the Nats lose… it doesn’t matter what the Mets do or don’t do….

      • scnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:13 PM

Agreed. We don’t need to worry about anyone but ourselves.

      • Big Red W - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:14 PM

It does. If the Nats lose, the Mets need to lose so we stay within striking distance

      • stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:14 PM

        Oh, it matters.

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:18 PM

Until the Nats can WIN, it doesn’t matter what the Mets do. They can lose on out while the Nats do the same and they go to the post season….

Nats haven’t won in a week or so. They need to do that first

  31. exposremains - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:09 PM

That’s not just the losing streak FP , its been like that all year. Sloppy, uninspired. I thought Desmond would make an error on the previous play.

  32. NatsLady - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:10 PM

Two errors already, plus that cupcake fastball to Car-Go. (sigh)

    • scmargenau - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:13 PM

Um that was high and inside. Good pitch. Better hit

      • NatsLady - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:16 PM

JZimm was right to “challenge” Car-Go. Sometimes you lose. Maybe should have been a little higher.

      • natsdial8 - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:27 PM

Not sure where you all are coming from . The guy is killing the ball and 1st base is open you can,’t throw anything near the plate.

    • Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:18 PM

You don’t walk CarGo every chance you get. It wasn’t a bad pitch. Got beat by a good hitter.

      It happens.

      • NatsLady - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:35 PM

I’m with you on this, Mrsb. You just would put another runner on base for Arenado.

  33. exposremains - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:11 PM

Is that the Rockies that the mets swept in a 4 game series?

Huge failure of an at bat by Ramos….

  38. manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:18 PM

More RISP problems again. Taylor did his job, but Ramos and JZim couldn’t do theirs.

  39. Big Red W - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:21 PM

There is something wrong with the DNA of this team. They should win at least 90 ball games. There are no excuses. Matt Williams is who to blame for this. Fire him.

    • stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:24 PM

Whether or not he’s “to blame” when you see a team coming apart at the seams before your very eyes, someone needs to be held responsible. And there’s really only one candidate.

I’ve never seen what positives he brings to the team.

  40. stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:22 PM

Mrsb I understand your point that the Nats need to take care of their own business. Of course they do.

But when you say “it doesn’t matter” if the Mets win, you’re wrong.

    • Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:24 PM

So if the Nats don’t win tonight, what does that matter if the Mets do or dont…

      I will wait.

      • stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:28 PM

What’s the difference between 5.5 and 4.5? I can wait too, if you’d like to phone a friend.

Hint: it’s one. And they all count.

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:32 PM

Lol, thanks for proving my point. They are STILL down, do you get that?

It’s really simple. If the Nats don’t win, what the Mets do don’t matter… do I need to say it slower.

      • stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:38 PM

Now you’re just being silly. If we win and they lose we are still down. So that doesn’t matter either?

Let’s ignore each other shall we?

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:39 PM

What part of IF THE NATS DON’T WIN… didnt you get the first time???

Not my fault you missed it. Carry on.

  41. NatsLady - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:24 PM

All right, this guy is NOT a good pitcher. Let’s clobber him for five runs. RIGHT NOW.

    • Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:27 PM

I’m trying to think what I said before when they hit 5 the other day…

Hale has an ERA of over 5…. so Nats score 7, right!?!?

  42. scmargenau - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:25 PM

Even FP calling them out. “What are u made of, u lost 6 in a row”

  43. coop202 - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:27 PM

Well.. now that full negativity has taken over this board… nowhere to go but up. hey espi.

  44. manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:27 PM

JZim to much to ask you to stay focus and execute nearly 100% of the time.

Meat ball to CarGo just a meatball, but 2 meatballs in 2 innings? What is that about.

  45. scmargenau - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:29 PM

Funny when Mrsb gets upset and expresses her distastes it’s all good

    #hypocrite

    • Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:30 PM

Bye felicia… please get real. This team deserves criticism and I’ve said my fair share.

I will never say no dumb Crap like they are lazy and don’t care all of that non sense you said. Dont be mad someone called you out on it.

      #tryagain

      • nattygoats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:33 PM

When Wilson Ramos smashed a ball 3 weeks ago and just stood there and watched it hit the wall for a lousy single, is that not lazy? Yes or no

      • scmargenau - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:40 PM

        Ok I’ll try again.

Lazy – not studying batters and throwing wrong pitches
        – not studying pitchers and having a poor batting stat
        – managers not knowing when to small ball, pull pitchers, steal, etc.
        – not running out grounder so 100 percent
        – being u repaired mentally for crucial games. (2014 4 walk offs in a row, that’s not this years mentality
        – goofing around in dugout while playing embarrassingly bad
        – maker same mistakes over and over without learning. Managers and players.

That’s just a few. U think this team looks like they passionately care and are giving all? Come in MrsB!

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:51 PM

I will humor you SC…. there is a difference between LAZY and undisciplined.

A lot of what you speak of is undisciplined.

      • dcwx61 - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:54 PM

I do wonder if there is a morale problem but i have nothing to base it on
except not crazy how management has treated some of its players (Starting with Roark, then Storen, then Fister).
        the problem is they’re lazy
        the problem is they stink
        the problem is they’re crazy
        the problem is they drink
Golly, Boswell, we got problems of our own.

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:56 PM

        Haha dc… hahaha..

But tell me, what didnt you like in the treatment of Fister and Roark? I’m really curious….

      • dcwx61 - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:00 PM

I just feel bad for all players that lose their esteemed positions….but that’s baseball. but the male ego is a fragile one and the game is 90% mental so the problem is they’re misunderstood because deep down inside them, there is good

  46. manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:29 PM

Notice they are smart enough to just walk Harper.

Could we start walking some people instead of getting crushed.

  47. nattygoats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:31 PM

Every player minus Span who is a free agent next year has been garbage this season. JZ mediocre with Fister and Desmond just awful. Ramos is a poor excuse for an athlete. How old is that guy? 46. I said 2. 8 on this rode trip. Gonna be tough getting there.

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:37 PM

Span at that has missed so much, but when in very good.

The others free agents have been week.

I still give the qualifying offer to all 4.

Another problem out side of a little bit of Rendon and a little RZim the injured when they returned have been substandard.

      • nattygoats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:39 PM

Agree with you. Why not sign them now. Maybe their minds are on the contract.

    • dcwx61 - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:39 PM

The oreos scored a run…cheer up

      • nattygoats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:40 PM

That’s a lose lose friend. Rooting Os is like rooting for Cowboys.

      • dcwx61 - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:42 PM

but if they win, the mets lose

  48. scmargenau - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:32 PM

Where would we be without esco? Guys been incredible. Him and Bryce carry us

    • nattygoats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:34 PM

Heart. They have miles and miles of heart.

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:38 PM

Both outstanding Espi has been fine Span when playing fine, all others weak at best.

Robinson as part time OK, but can’t field a thing.

  49. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:34 PM

Great base running by Harper…. I was trying to figure was that a contact play or what…

  50. stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:35 PM

To repeat what FP said earlier: Here we go!

If this turns out to be a replay of that crazy game in Atlanta it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.

  51. nattygoats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:35 PM

Would anyone care to answer my question about Ramos watching what he thought was a HR and only getting a single. Lazy or not?

    • dcwx61 - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:56 PM

not….i think it was a mistake like an error

  52. scnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:38 PM

Safe to say JZim won’t be signing with the Rockies

    • NatsLady - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:40 PM

      LOL! Good analysis!

  53. NatsLady - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:39 PM

OK, Jordan, how about a clean inning?

  54. Big Red W - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:40 PM

Anyone feel like we’re going to lose this game?

    • NatsLady - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:41 PM

Nope. Coors is a pinball machine. Just go with the flow cause there’s gonna be a LOT of flow.

    • nattygoats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:41 PM

No we win this. Please someone answer my Ramos question.

      • scmargenau - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:42 PM

See a positive from goat! Mark the tape!

      • manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:44 PM

        +1

      • Big Red W - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:43 PM

        It was lazy.

    • scmargenau - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:41 PM

      Not me. We win this

      • nattygoats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:43 PM

Hey now. I defended you against Mrs B. Answer my Ramos question please

      • scmargenau - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:53 PM

He’s awful this year. Hurt too much, too slow, must go. We need a ,or of pieces

    • Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:42 PM

7-5 nats… was it you who asked for predictions from the California trip?

      • Big Red W - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:43 PM

        No.

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:46 PM

Dang, someone asked thoughts on what peeps thought the Nats were going to do in Cali…

  55. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:40 PM

So Jordan…. no more runs, k?

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:42 PM

That is to much to ask.

  56. manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:41 PM

Last 2 outs are our typical. RZim fans on one way low and away, MAT fans on one a little high and tight.

We just swing at so many non strikes.

Schu needs to work on some exercises to help the batters identify pitch and location better.

    • dcwx61 - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:46 PM

that’s the analysis….we are a free swinging injury prone team with a manager who needs some additional training. Not a sermon, just a thought

      • nattygoats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:47 PM

        You a 100.3 listene?

      • dcwx61 - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:49 PM

The classic rock station ? yeah, sometimes

    • scmargenau - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:50 PM

So true- and that’s just a lack of commitment towards being great and doing your homework.

  57. nattygoats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:44 PM

Thanks big red. Now I’m happy.

  58. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:44 PM

Great sequence to CarGo…. and got him for the K.

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:46 PM

He didn’t pitch him a meatball lime last time.

Had he pitched like that in the first people would be fine, but his pitch in the first was a meatball.

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:48 PM

That wasnt a meatball. It was a good pitch. He pitched that way to him before and had success..

  59. coop202 - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:45 PM

man… Cargo and Arenado.. I respectfully dislike you both these days

    • scmargenau - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:56 PM

Would u give zim and werth for him and pay half their salary?

      • coop202 - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:10 PM

Don’t think they’d take that, plus we’d get a log jam at 3rd.. but I like their talent and horizon.

  60. nattygoats - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:46 PM

Nats win this 8. 5 and rip of 18 of the next 20 . ” Hun get me another Margarita.” Go Nats

    • scmargenau - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:02 PM

      Poor me another goat

  61. scmargenau - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:55 PM

Anyone tried weggmans chicken sausage? It’s great and lean and goes perfect with a growler from Sweetwater. If we go down I’m going down eating and drinking good stuff. 😉

  62. scmargenau - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:59 PM

    Danny freaking E !!!!

    • rlndtln - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:04 PM

Again how dumb is MW.After his game in SF where hit the first HR back to the bench.I said it at the time play Danny Rendon was 0 for the series at that point.Play Danny for either Desi or Rendon maybe a rotation of the 3 or Desi or Rendon sits every other day.MW is a slow learner but even he will eventually catch on.

  63. stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 9:59 PM

There we go. Your turn to keep it going Bryce.

  64. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:00 PM

Wow juuusssst fair. I knew he would get a hit after the missed chance last pitch….

    Way to go Espi..

    • scmargenau - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:04 PM

Lazy hit. If he worked harder that’s a triple.

      #sarcasm

  65. manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:00 PM

Wow a littlitt luck hit the line and didn’t bounce into the stand?

    Espi surely benched tomorrow

    • dcwx61 - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:02 PM

      he’ll never learn

  66. manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:03 PM

Harper fouls one off, then the next pitch was in the same spot and he took it. If you are going to swing at one why not the other?

    • scmargenau - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:06 PM

It’s moving 93 mph – it’s not as simple as u make it sound.

  67. dcwx61 - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:11 PM

Good discussion earlier if the game really matters.
So they make the playoffs, do they have a chance to beat the cards/bucs/cubs
well, i guess that’s why they play the game.

  68. coop202 - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:11 PM

flipped to the mets game to watch what i thought was clip giving up a game tying homerun… sadly they were playing at the wall and granderson caught it. Mets luck continues.

    • coop202 - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:13 PM

What lAMehieau doing up the middle on Escobar? He hits lots to right. Not a real lull hitter.

    • stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:15 PM

Bit them on Desmond’s grounder though.

  76. coop202 - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:21 PM

  77. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:22 PM

  78. scmargenau - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:23 PM

Ok that’s how u play!! Sac, aggressive running = score

  79. dcwx61 - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:23 PM

    desmond manufactures the run

  80. stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:23 PM

Desmond totally manufactured that run. More like this, please.

  81. scmargenau - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:24 PM

If we win we need to win 70 percent to catch mets if they go 500 — ugh. That’s tough

    • dcwx61 - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:26 PM

The power of now….future tripping doesn’t help….just enjoy the beauty of colorado baseball

  86. dcwx61 - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:30 PM

oh that was the funniest throw of the year…Bryce throws to the first base coach

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:32 PM

Ramos was part of the witness protection program. No where near backing up. Just standing at home.

      • dcwx61 - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:33 PM

there stands wilson like a stone wall….stone wall ramos

  87. manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:31 PM

Harper’s throw was terrible but Ramos’s back up was much worse than throw.

    IbB CarGo

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:33 PM

Pitched him fine the last two times. Making you wonder what happened inning 1

    • coop202 - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:36 PM

probably would’ve scored from first in the gap with two outs honestly.

      • stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:37 PM

        Easily.

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:38 PM

Definitely a possibility. MAT has been showing the cannon lately, but it is what it is.

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:37 PM

Error no biggie, with 2 outs the runner would running on the hit it rolled all the way to wall he scores anyway.

      • manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:38 PM

0-2 count and he bops him on the arm. In 2014 he would never do that, but a regular to doing not so good things this year.

      • stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:40 PM

I dunno. Remember him blowing up in a couple of games where he had much bigger leads than this the last couple of years.

      • Big Red W - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:41 PM

I think it’s all intentional as Jordan does not want to be here.

      • stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:53 PM

If he returns to the game with our uniform on that’d be cool.

      • coop202 - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:55 PM

We’d be asleep at the wheel if the Mets were able to get him, which actually seems quite possible

      • manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:56 PM

I was teasing to see who would be the first to say we let him slip by. I predict that would happen though.

      • coop202 - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:04 PM

        100% fell for it ha.

  104. manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:50 PM

    Kyle Parker’s second career home.

Come on JZim is there a reason you aren’t executing like we need.

My favorite fact on Kyle Parker is he is the only NCAA player in the the same school year to throw 20 touchdown passes and hit 20 homers. Avbaseball star at Clemson.

  105. scmargenau - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:50 PM

    Anyone up in pen?

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:52 PM

      You would think so

  106. Big Red W - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:51 PM

I hate hate hate this sport

  107. stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:52 PM

O’s leave winning run on first. Hella comeback attempt though.

  108. nattygoats - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:56 PM

Starting pitching has been garbage also. Horrible outing by JZ.

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 10:59 PM

Starting pitchers have been the weakest link since the all star game.

  109. stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:00 PM

    Red Sox hire Dombrowski.

    • ehay2k - Aug 19, 2015 at 8:13 AM

Cool, who can Rizzo steal from the Sawx?

  111. stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:01 PM

Paulsen not good at pop ups.

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:06 PM

Paulsen can’t field Aranado can . which way should you hit?

      • stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:08 PM

You say that almost as if you were serious.

  112. manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:02 PM

Paulsen 3 bad pkays finally an E

    • stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:22 PM

Didn’t he have some similarly awful plays in DC, too? I seem to recall abusing him at one of the games.

  113. stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:03 PM

Can’t blame Ian for letting those go.

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:04 PM

Strike 3 was a strike strike 2 was not

      • stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:07 PM

Strike three had nice movement and probably caught the black. Strike two was several inches inside. Neither hittable.

  114. manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:03 PM

We. If strike 2 was a strike surely strike 3 was going to be . just slam the ball or don’t stare at the pitch.

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:05 PM

RZim center homer pitch and a cheap foul back.

When you are winning its a homer.

      sadly so

  118. stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:10 PM

Buckle up, kids. It’s bullpen time. Which guys show up?

  119. IsawTeddywin - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:10 PM

Nats pitchers BA and WHIP virtually identical pre and post All Star.
Big difference, pre AS, 1 HR per 49 AB, post AS, 1 for 32.
Escobar having a night! Hope he’s OK.

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:23 PM

      How about the runs allowed?

      • coop202 - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:26 PM

seems like they walk more and also have a higher OBP, but not sure where to look

      • IsawTeddywin - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:46 PM

Pre AS era 3.56 Post 4.43
Most of the extra runs coming from Hr’s, seems to me.

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:29 PM

Now move the line, and bat around.

  120. Mrsb loves the Nats - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:16 PM

  121. manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:22 PM

OK guys is Storen pitching the 8th.

    I believe he will.

He can’t continue this funk can he?

    • scmargenau - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:24 PM

      Jobu’s rum

    • stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:24 PM

This probably isn’t the ballpark you’d choose to reverse a slump. But the slider plays better than the curve here, so what the heck. Go Drew.

      • rlndtln - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:28 PM

This is the situation with the 5th bench guy notably denDeker he could run for Robinson and you in the 9th for Jason.

      • stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:39 PM

I predict that, just like last year, Matt will instantly get much smarter on September 1 when the rosters expand.

  122. scmargenau - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:28 PM

    Nice jdub

  123. coop202 - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:28 PM

  126. stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:34 PM

Imagine Clint trying to play outfield in that pasture.

    Another clutch wild pitch!

    • rlndtln - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:36 PM

We are a sad team. The Rockies are pathetic.

      • stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:41 PM

Come on. This ballpark is like playing in an amusement park. Games here tend to be bizarre.

Nats have had plenty of chance to quit and haven’t.

  127. stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:36 PM

Hard to believe this is the same Kahnle who closed for them in DC.

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:42 PM

      He sure looked different.

Let’s hope Storen doesn’t look like the same Storen they saw in DC either.

  128. coop202 - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:39 PM

Let’s get two more and finish this one under 4 hrs.

  129. manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:41 PM

Harper 0 fo2 with 3 runs scored with 3 walks

    • stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:42 PM

      .600 OBP

      • manassasnatsfan - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:43 PM

        Yep

  130. Section 222 - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:42 PM

Home for the end of the game. Woo hoo, Nats up by 4. With JW leading off, and Zim hitting 6th. I like it.

If I’m MW, I bring in Pap to lock this one down, even though it’s not a save situation. We really need a win here.

    • stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:44 PM

Yes, although I think they’re going to make us play the eighth inning first.

      • Section 222 - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:45 PM

        Darn!

  131. scmargenau - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:44 PM

    Ok – we got this..,I think :-/

  132. scmargenau - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:46 PM

Gotta say both LoD called a win above. So kudos to positive vibes.

    • stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:58 PM

I’m skeptical but even if they’re playing possum it makes things a lot more tolerable.

  133. stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:46 PM

I’d be tempted to go with Treinen and/or Thornton in this zoo.

  134. conatsguy - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:46 PM

Keep the line moving boys. Lotta ” let’s go Nats” breaking out around our section

    • stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:52 PM

The guys yelling “WIIIL-SON” came through loud and clear on TV.

      • ArVAFan - Aug 19, 2015 at 12:02 AM

    Nice hitting by MAT…

    • stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:49 PM

Really. You almost never see the Nats make that kind of contact. Cardinals, Giants and others often kill us with those.

  136. Big Red W - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:52 PM

    Wow. Be still my heart

  140. Section 222 - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:54 PM

Ah, FP. So explain why Drew was absolutely lights out for about four appearances after Pap arrive, and then totally fell apart. Was that because it took him a few weeks to realize his routine was out of whack? Puh-lease.

  141. Section 222 - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:56 PM

Storen vs. DesCalso. Nice K. If only….

  142. stoatva - Aug 18, 2015 at 11:56 PM

Drew might want to save the ball he got Descalso out with.

  143. stoatva - Aug 19, 2015 at 12:00 AM

    Dodged that freight train.

  144. Big Red W - Aug 19, 2015 at 12:02 AM

Get the bats going at coors. Sweep the rox and then the brew crew at home. 65-59 before you know it.

    • stoatva - Aug 19, 2015 at 12:05 AM

From your lips to the baseball gods’ ears.

  145. stoatva - Aug 19, 2015 at 12:03 AM

Giants shut out Cardinals on two hits, behind Vogelsong and the entire bullpen.

  146. stoatva - Aug 19, 2015 at 12:07 AM

    Nine walks. Nine.

  147. ArVAFan - Aug 19, 2015 at 12:10 AM

Wow. I’m guessing the Nats fans outnumber the Rox fans at this point–at least based on the amount of cheering.

  148. veejh - Aug 19, 2015 at 12:15 AM

Big deal. We finally won a game against one of the worst teams in baseball. Neato.

    • rlndtln - Aug 19, 2015 at 12:16 AM

Hard to believe we lost 2 of 3 at home to this team.

    • manassasnatsfan - Aug 19, 2015 at 12:16 AM

Better than loosing lime we did 2 out of 3 at home.

      • veejh - Aug 19, 2015 at 12:19 AM

I know. I was at the game. I wasn’t prepared for the cold. It’s been like 95 degrees and sunny every day for the past month and of course the day the Nats come to town, it’s slightly overcast and turns into a slight drizzle around 60 during the game with a steady breeze.

      • conatsguy - Aug 19, 2015 at 1:28 AM

Dang, 60 degree temps at Coors Field are balmy. Have to take you to an April game….Bring your Parka😎

    • stoatva - Aug 19, 2015 at 12:25 AM

Under the circumstances, yes. Very big deal.

      • veejh - Aug 19, 2015 at 12:27 AM

Not really. If we sweep the Rox, then, the Brewers, then, that’s a big deal.

      • stoatva - Aug 19, 2015 at 12:36 AM

i think you only get to play one at a time.

But it sounds like you’re grumpy for some reason. Later.

  149. manassasnatsfan - Aug 19, 2015 at 12:15 AM

  154. Big Red W - Aug 19, 2015 at 12:51 AM

Nats are going to sweep Colorado, come home and sweep Milwaukee, then sweep San Diego and Miami and be 11 games over at
    70-59.

  155. conatsguy - Aug 19, 2015 at 1:43 AM

Back from the game. Had a great time. Lots of Nats fans. Very well behaved and enthusiastic. Represented DC well.
