Game 98: Nats at Marlins

Jul 28, 2015, 4:46 PM EST

USA Today Sports Images

There’s been a whole lotta stuff flying around today, most notably trade rumors, but ultimately there’s a ballgame to be played tonight in Miami. The Nationals continue their 3-city, 10-game trip beginning tonight at Marlins Park, where Jose Fernandez takes the mound as the latest big-name pitcher to take on this lineup.

The good news: The Nats have as close to a complete lineup as they’ve had in nearly 2 1/2 months, with Jayson Werth and Ryan Zimmerman activated off the DL this afternoon. Matt Williams had some decisions to make with his batting order, and he decided to go with Anthony Rendon in the leadoff spot, Werth in the 3-spot and Zimmerman in the 5-spot behind Bryce Harper. We’ll see how that plays out, and whether Harper gets any more pitches to hit with that kind of protection for the first time in a long time.

Jordan Zimmermann starts for the Nationals, having gone 3-0 with a 2.33 ERA over his last six starts. He’ll be facing a Marlins lineup that is without the feared Giancarlo Stanton but does have dynamic leadoff man Dee Gordon back off the DL tonight.

I’m not in Miami for this series, but please enjoy the conversation here, and definitely please check the homepage throughout the afternoon and evening for any breaking news…

Boy, this lineup is a welcome sight! Great to have Ryan Z back at 1B and Werth in LF.

  2. zmunchkin - Jul 28, 2015 at 4:51 PM

First time since early June the Nats have only been missing one of the projected starting position players.

    • garyfromcville - Jul 28, 2015 at 4:56 PM

Once Span gets back we can finally see what will happen with a full team. I don’t think the Met’s can keep up with us if we can stay healthy.

    • adcwonk - Jul 28, 2015 at 5:33 PM

Tonight is the first tine this entire season that Rendon, Werth, and RZ are playing in the same game!

  3. knoxvillenat - Jul 28, 2015 at 4:52 PM

    No Mark in Miami……boo, hiss!

  4. TimDz - Jul 28, 2015 at 4:52 PM

Not exactly sure what kind of protection Zimmerman gives Harper…With the way Desi has been swinging the bat, maybe it would make more sense for him to hit behind Harper…

    • coop202 - Jul 28, 2015 at 4:54 PM

On the plus side… no one knows!

    • jd - Jul 28, 2015 at 4:57 PM

This is silly talk. No one will give in to Harper regardless if Zim, Desi or Robinson hits behind him. We simply don’t have anyone in his class which can really make a difference. Harper needs to keep being selective as he has been and keep taking what’s given. Keep in mind that he has accumulated his numbers with not much around him all year.

    • garyfromcville - Jul 28, 2015 at 4:57 PM

I agree that Desi would be a better choice right now to bat after Harper but it’ll all work itself out over the next few weeks.

      • scnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 5:04 PM

And, outside of the last week, you have seen Desi at the plate this year, correct?

  5. jd - Jul 28, 2015 at 4:54 PM

I think it would be real funny if Zim gets a couple of hits off Fernandez after being unable to hit A+ ball pitching.

    Could happen.

    • Section 222 - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:11 PM

Absolutely could. In fact, it did. One anyway. And a walk. Love it.

  6. Section 222 - Jul 28, 2015 at 4:57 PM

They’re back! Maybe this gives us a fighting change against Fernandez. Maybe not.

Sorry that Mark isn’t down there to report.

    • masterfishkeeper - Jul 28, 2015 at 5:05 PM

It’s not like the Marlins have a killer lineup. If the Nats can scratch out a few runs against Fernandez and the bullpen, they should be fine.

    • natsfan1a - Jul 28, 2015 at 5:49 PM

Agreed on point two. I miss having our regular beat writer in the press box lineup.

  7. scnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 5:23 PM

MLBtraderumors has a AA pitcher going for Papelbon

    • masterfishkeeper - Jul 28, 2015 at 5:25 PM

      Uh oh, not Giolito!

      Seriously, Pivetta? Maybe Voth?

      • ehay2k - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:20 PM

Gold star to fishkeeper for even knowing who Pivetta was.

    • Karl Kolchak - Jul 28, 2015 at 5:26 PM

Probably Voth then. Only one currently at AA other than Giolito with much trade value.

      • Karl Kolchak - Jul 28, 2015 at 5:27 PM

Maybe Pivetta though…probably depends on how much of P’s salary the Phillies are willing to eat.

    • Hiram Hover - Jul 28, 2015 at 6:18 PM

      mlbtraderumors now says Pivetta.

      I can live with that.

  8. Danny - Jul 28, 2015 at 5:28 PM

    It’s either Voth/Pivetta going.

    Hopefully Pivetta, I like Voth!

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 28, 2015 at 5:31 PM

Consider what the Mets gave up for Cloppard and you knew the Nats would have to give up more.

      • jd - Jul 28, 2015 at 5:35 PM

I am not sure Meisner is a lesser prospect than Pivetta for example. Even if it’s Voth or Bacus it’s not a top prospect. Also Paplebon is better than Clippard.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 28, 2015 at 5:39 PM

I like Voth and Pivetta more

      • Karl Kolchak - Jul 28, 2015 at 5:37 PM

Voth really came on this year. His ERA, K/9, BB/9 and WHIP numbers at AA were very similar to Joe Ross’s.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 28, 2015 at 5:59 PM

Phillies had many players to choose from to make the deal work. Doing this deal the Nats don’t have to give up Difo + Fedde + PTBNL to get Chapman.

        I think Jocketty blew it.

      • coop202 - Jul 28, 2015 at 5:38 PM

depends how much of the contract the Phillies eat. Clearing up 26M for them in a straight swap to demote the 3rd best closer in baseball would be unRizzo like though.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 28, 2015 at 5:39 PM

        Cash is important

      • zmunchkin - Jul 28, 2015 at 6:08 PM

Rosenthal reporting that he will close, be extended to 2016, and taking millions less.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 28, 2015 at 6:15 PM

“Ghost of Steve M. – Jul 28, 2015 at 2:49 PM…. Phillies and Nats agree on the players and just needs Papelbon and his agent to agree to how Rizzo wants to set things up.

Just my speculation if Rizzo gives him the bonus and option guarantee then it takes the closer milestones out of the picture.”

Sounds like I had that 3 hours ago 😉

      • NatsLady - Jul 28, 2015 at 6:12 PM

Per Keith Law, the Mets overpaid for Clip. Not sure that means the Nats should overpay for Papelbon.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 28, 2015 at 6:14 PM

Agree with you and I think the mistake the A’s made was they should have kept Clip and QO’d him and that would give them a better prospect.

Based on a convo I just had with a scout, he hopes Nats moved Pivetta and not Voth.

  9. nattygoats - Jul 28, 2015 at 5:34 PM

Can’t believe Rizzo gonna cave to demands of Papelbon. He’s a jerk. Pass on him

    • jd - Jul 28, 2015 at 5:37 PM

well he is 17 for 17 in saves though.

      • nattygoats - Jul 28, 2015 at 5:54 PM

I can’t root for arse clowns.

      • Hiram Hover - Jul 28, 2015 at 6:20 PM

You seem to spend a lot of time rooting against the Nats anyway, so I am not sure we will notice the difference.

    • Allnats - Jul 28, 2015 at 6:15 PM

Don’t root for him then. You were clamoring for bullpen help and u got it

  10. Drew - Jul 28, 2015 at 5:42 PM

Greetings from Florence, Italy where there is surprisingly little buzz about the MLB trade deadline.

On the stroll between the Duomo and Michelangelo’s David I saw folks with Giants and Tigers hats, but no KC denizens who must be thrilled with Cueto and Zobrist. (Though they’d better win now after dealing 5 young arms.)

Papelbon isn’t my cup of espresso, but he’d certainly help the Nats. I can see dealing Voth if the Nats have Pap for 2016, too.

  11. natsfan1a - Jul 28, 2015 at 5:45 PM

    Go, NATS!

(Have some gelato for us, Drew.)

  12. nattygoats - Jul 28, 2015 at 5:55 PM

Get that setup dude from SD

    • Section 222 - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:13 PM

You’d rather have Benoit than Papelbon? That’s funny.

  13. kgwcoach - Jul 28, 2015 at 6:01 PM

    Greetings from Miami

    • Joe Seamhead - Jul 28, 2015 at 6:03 PM

      Thanks for the report.

  14. Danny - Jul 28, 2015 at 6:23 PM

Nats deal Pivetta. Thrilled it’s him and not Voth.

Ghost disagree that Clippard would get a QO, return a draft pick. As had to get what they could in a deal

  15. rlndtln - Jul 28, 2015 at 6:36 PM

    Meija suspended 162 games drugs

  16. rlndtln - Jul 28, 2015 at 6:39 PM

What do you guys think of Papelbon.Did not want Kimbrel or Chapman to take Drews spot as they were not an upgrade and what it would do to his ego.Now we replace him with a jerk who is not as good as Drew.Waiting your comments.

    • adcwonk - Jul 28, 2015 at 7:30 PM

Nobody said we didn’t want Kimbrel or Chapman — we said we wouldn’t give up Ross for either of them. Get it? The _price_ is an essential part of the equation.

Papelbon, btw, has a better WHIP this year than Kimbrel, Chapman, _or_ Drew, btw — so it’s not like he’s chopped liver.

Pivetta for Papelbon certainly seems a whole lot better for the Nats than Ross for Kimbrel.

(would I rather trade Pivetta for Kimbrel? Certainly — but, obviously, the Padres weren’t going for that).

  17. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 28, 2015 at 6:41 PM

Hey NL, or anyone that knows, what were the comments Clip made about the Nats?

Pap to DC… I feel kinda sorry for Drew…

    • rlndtln - Jul 28, 2015 at 6:45 PM

      Very quiet guys

    • adcwonk - Jul 28, 2015 at 7:26 PM

Somebody in the other thread said something like: “The Nats are beatable” – -or something like that.

  18. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 28, 2015 at 7:24 PM

I entertained thoughts of the Nats getting Dee Gordon this past off season… thinking of havoc on the basepaths.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 7:40 PM

I thought the same when I heard Dodgers were offering him.

  19. adcwonk - Jul 28, 2015 at 7:27 PM

I gotta tell ya’ — I am definitely not used to hearing, on the radio:

“And there’s a sharply hit grounder to Rendon, and the throw to Zimmerman for the out”

    Nice . . .

  20. adcwonk - Jul 28, 2015 at 7:31 PM

Jose Fernandez had only walked 3 in 26 innings . . . until he faced “eagle eye” Harper 😉

  21. natsjackinfl - Jul 28, 2015 at 7:34 PM

Those minor league at bats got Ryan ready to hit Fernandez.

  22. natslive - Jul 28, 2015 at 7:34 PM

    Welcome back Ryan!

    • manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 7:37 PM

      +1

  23. manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 7:37 PM

Cone on Desi just a grounder to seconds a run, and you swing at one 6-8 inches outside. Cone on.

    • adcwonk - Jul 28, 2015 at 7:40 PM

You know, Fernandez is pretty good. 11K’s per 9 IP this year so far. It’s not so easy to read his slider all the time.

  24. manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 7:39 PM

Come on Wilson a hanging slider and you foul it, but at least you hit the better pitch. Could have crushed the first one

  25. adcwonk - Jul 28, 2015 at 7:39 PM

That’s a good RBI (Ramos) against a tough pitcher when you have two strikes

  26. NatsLady - Jul 28, 2015 at 7:40 PM

James Shields gave up a 2-run dinger to Duda. 2-0 Mets.

  27. rlndtln - Jul 28, 2015 at 7:40 PM

    should have had 2

    • adcwonk - Jul 28, 2015 at 7:44 PM

Right. Because Jose Fernandez always allows every runner in scoring position to score.

      • rlndtln - Jul 28, 2015 at 7:54 PM

All you needed was a Desi GB to 2nd.Is that asking too much.

      • adcwonk - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:29 PM

No, it’s not asking too much. But it’s a whole lot easier said than done against their ace.

  28. adcwonk - Jul 28, 2015 at 7:44 PM

JZ goes through the second inning on 9 pitches.

    • adcwonk - Jul 28, 2015 at 7:53 PM

While Jose is up to 50+ pitches after three. That could be big . . .

  29. veejh - Jul 28, 2015 at 7:45 PM

We got an excellent closer without having to give up any blue chip prospects. I like it. Now our 8th and 9th innings are set. Boom.

    • Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 28, 2015 at 7:48 PM

I had thoughts of sexy match ups with Chapman… but Pap is here… and while I’m not a huge fan, while he wears a Nats uni, I will hope he succeeds like no other.

Again, Nats needed BP help… so it is what it is.

      • adcwonk - Jul 28, 2015 at 7:55 PM

I had thoughts of sexy match ups with Chapman

Yeah — it would have been cool to have both a righty and lefty top-notch closer.

But, instead, we’re still left with is, possibly, the best 1-2 BP punch in the NL. 😉

  30. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 28, 2015 at 7:51 PM

I thought was gone off Anthony bat…. I really did.

  31. veejh - Jul 28, 2015 at 7:51 PM

    Harper looked like a walk.

Ghost check it and strike 2 to Zim.

Scherzer, JZim and even Fister have struggled with bunts.

  39. manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:17 PM

J Zim’s non bunt costly so far.

    Hopefully we score Taylor anyway.

How I have missed Anthony…. so glad he is back….

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:20 PM

+6 I man crush on him. I read JayB saying the Nats only hitter is Bryce Harper and I told him “wrong”

      • adcwonk - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:32 PM

Nats only hitter is Bryce Harper…

He didn’t notice the two other guys who were hitting over .300 — including the guy who led the NL in base hits last year? Or Rendon who was 5th in bWAR for offense in the NL last year?

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:36 PM

Exactly. Just sad the way a supposed Nats fan bashes his own team.

      • adcwonk - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:58 PM

When’s the last time he said anything nice about the Nats?

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 28, 2015 at 10:01 PM

Never that I remember. I had my doubts about this bench but the Federal Reserves saved this team while Rendon, RZim and Werth and Span were out.

        Still in 1st place.

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:27 PM

I was hoping he would leave the bat on his shoulder and take a few… then work him and foul off a bunch stuff…

  44. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:23 PM

    The dreaded doubleplay again. Ugh.

  45. ehay2k - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:24 PM

83 pitches for Fernandez, who may be getting tired. Need a quick inning to get him back out there.

  46. rlndtln - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:24 PM

  51. manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:32 PM

Bases loaded 1 out we can’t score.

Men on first and third one out the batter elevates just like Werth should of tied score.

    • rlndtln - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:34 PM

Ghost.Where would you have batted Harp? This game should have been over.Desi cost us a run,JZIM not being able to bunt and MW J axon 3rd.

  52. nattygoats - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:33 PM

And that’s the game. Because our big expensive free agent ex Phillie Werthless grounds into DP with bases loaded. Oh and BTW. Desmond ain’t back.

  53. ehay2k - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:33 PM

Fish tie the game but Fernandez still in? Seems unwise, and I hope I’m right. 😀

  54. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:34 PM

I thought the Nats could win this 1-0. Doubleplay wipes out inning for Nats and then 2 singles and a Sac Fly

    It’s the Marlins people.

      • nattygoats - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:40 PM

It means there 17 under 500 and we can’t beat them.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:42 PM

        Uh, Jose Fernandez, SecretWasianMan

    • veejh - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:37 PM

      Fernandez ain’t too shabby.

    • veejh - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:37 PM

      Fernandez ain’t too shabby.

  56. manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:36 PM

    Put Harper third tomorrow please.

  57. rlndtln - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:36 PM

How would u like to have had Harp up last inning.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:39 PM

      Put Werth 5th at best

  58. adcwonk - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:38 PM

Syndergaard has a perfect game through six?

    • masterfishkeeper - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:40 PM

At 81 pitches. Will be interesting to see how long he goes.

  59. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:38 PM

Ryan just missed that one…. but that was a good pitch by Jose.

  60. NatsLady - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:39 PM

    Syndergaard perfect through six.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:41 PM

      Carp said that 6 K.

      Nothing close to a hit.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:50 PM

2 on and no outs in the 7th

  61. nattygoats - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:41 PM

Desi 3 Ks and espi sits

  62. manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:42 PM

I guess Desi forgot everything Calvtold him.

  63. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:44 PM

Somebody needs to drug test Gordon.

  64. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:44 PM

    I’ll be danged…

  65. manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:44 PM

Good grief Jordan. Not what we needed at all.

    Cone on now get serious

    • manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:46 PM

Has Zim the wall or what? The balls crushed

  66. rlndtln - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:44 PM

This is tough to watch.Fernandez has not been great tonite. We should have had 3 runs easy but this is the story of this team.We just do not deliver the knock out punch. They get one runner on third and find a way to score him.Werth is going to take time to get back.Gordon leads with triple goodbye game lead is 1 .

    • veejh - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:46 PM

      the nonstop negativity is draining

      • nattygoats - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:48 PM

Sorry dude. But the underachieving baseball team is even more draining.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:49 PM

It’s just a buzz kill. It’s rarely good enough.

  67. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:45 PM

Both those pitches looked nice and fat…

  68. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:45 PM

Prado just doesn’t try to do too much with it. Just makes it look too easy.

    • knoxvillenat - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:48 PM

      Professional hitter.

  69. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:47 PM

If Bryce charges that harder he gets him. I love his throws but get to it harder. Sometimes he thinks he’s deeking these guys and daring them to go.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:54 PM

They get guys to third they score. We get the guy on third we hit double plays.

Conme on guys you can play better than this.

So far very much like Sunday. Lead early, but starter can’t hold it. Let’s have a different ending this time.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:57 PM

Do you agree that Bryce has to charge those?

      • manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:18 PM

Charged it enough. Charge any harder probably in poor position to throw.

My problem was the meatball pitch not Harpet

  70. manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:48 PM

Will Vulnerable lead off 7th with a single

  71. natslive - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:48 PM

I can’t help but wonder if that liner up the middle had some effect on JZim

  72. scnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:48 PM

You just wait and see, sometime Harper is actually going to throw the guy out. Lots of guys will get the free base until then but when it happens he will be the man.

  73. rlndtln - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:49 PM

And Carp said Fernandez record was in jeopardy he only thing in jeopardy is our lead.

  74. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:51 PM

Justin Upton doubleplay with runners on 3rd and 1st and 1 out in NYM

    • manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:55 PM

Like we should have done last inning.

  75. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:51 PM

Come on Jordan…. need a ground ball. Limit the damage.

    • Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:53 PM

He got it… just wasn’t hit hard enough to get 2 outs… dratz.

      • manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:55 PM

        Then it wasn’t good enough

  76. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:54 PM

And predictably the thread is messed up… never fails.

  77. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:54 PM

That play that RZim made on the grounder is the type I’m not sure CRob makes. #Defense

  78. rlndtln - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:55 PM

You guys have trouble with the truth.Sad team no manager.

    • nattygoats - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:08 PM

      Well spoken

  79. stoatva - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:55 PM

That could’ve been a lot worse.

  80. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:55 PM

Jonathan Papelbon’s spot on the 40 man was vacated by Dan Butler.

  81. bisonaudit - Jul 28, 2015 at 8:58 PM

Damn it, Harper. Lets the batter/runner advance to second on another stupid/aggressive throw and now two IBBs so now if it comes down to the 9th that’s going to turn their lineup over again.

  82. manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:01 PM

Why do I see so many ground balls that are dinky scoring runs for teams.

In same situations we hit a double play or strike out.

    It happens a lot

  83. bisonaudit - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:04 PM

Such a dumb throw by Harper. Shocking right. And now 2 IBBs so even if they get back in it that turns over their lineup for the 9th.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:08 PM

Had it been maybe .2 seconds sooner an out. So unless it gets the out it is stupid?

The results were bad, but I am much madder at the fat ball hit there than that throw.

  84. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:04 PM

Tough to do it on WordPress as its not Mark’s software.

  85. manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:06 PM

This is the 11th game since the all star game. Our starters have been out pitched more often than not.

We have had leads in most games, but the starters gave up the lead way to much.

  86. coop202 - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:08 PM

Lineup feels more dangerous with all these guys back… Let’s hope for some good luck to go with it.

  87. coop202 - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:09 PM

Solis is missing his spots though

  88. veejh - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:10 PM

    from the other thread. LOL!

    Gardner – Jul 28, 2015 at 9:06 PM
Oh no – our new closer isn’t a good clubhouse guy…closers don’t sit in the clubhouse. I like my closers unlikable and unhittable.

    • nattygoats - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:14 PM

Gotta have a lead to need a closer.

      • veejh - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:17 PM

        Correct.

Gotta have a closer to hold leads (especially during close playoff games).

  89. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:12 PM

So… Twin… does your sources think the Nats are done acquiring players before the Friday deadline?

    • veejh - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:13 PM

why not add another BP arm if possible? we gave up nothing for Paps. I’m sure Riz can pull off another arm for next to nothing again.

    • veejh - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:13 PM

        Zieglet

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:35 PM

Price on Ziegler was too high. Turn to Benoit.

    • veejh - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:14 PM

Why not get Kimbrel or Chapman too? Wouldn’t that be something.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:37 PM

Not happening. Padres were not reasonable on pricing Kimbrel and the Reds wanted Difo + Fedde and another prospect.

    • veejh - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:14 PM

Why not get Kimbrel or Chapman too? Wouldn’t that be something.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:33 PM

Sounds like Rizzo is done for today. Would take another bullpen arm if the price is right. Would rather play the waiver wire in August again as more teams drop out.

  90. manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:12 PM

Easy call out by a frame.

  91. nattygoats - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:15 PM

4 hits tonight. Whoooo hoop feels great to have that lineup back

  92. manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:15 PM

Who back to Syracuse Solis or Barrett both are to weak for me. Get Zieglar too.

  93. mauimo22 - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:16 PM

Why do the Fish rise to the occasion against us all the time?
Why can’t we really pound them like the rest of the league does??

    #Flummoxed

    • nattygoats - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:18 PM

Because we stink. BP for Nats has glove in one hand. Gas can in the other

  94. stoatva - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:16 PM

If Solis is the answer, it must have been the wrong question.

  95. manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:23 PM

    Was the ball boy asleep?

  96. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:24 PM

WordPress is acting up again. The Legion of Doom virus.

  97. manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:24 PM

With our great pitching once ahead, we just need to keep the other team down.

  98. nattygoats - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:25 PM

You want runs. Top of 2nd Texas 5 Yankees 11

  99. stoatva - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:26 PM

    Lead off double off Clippard.

  100. manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:28 PM

Now Werth gets the damn hit.

  101. stoatva - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:28 PM

How the hell can that delivery be legal?

    • manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:31 PM

  102. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:28 PM

  103. coop202 - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:29 PM

Our babip is depressing the last two weeks

  104. manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:30 PM

Shortstops bobbles the ball and it is still a double play. Talk about bad luck. Smoke the ball DP. Top the ball an RBI.

  105. Section 222 - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:32 PM

I’d really love to see our new bullpen at work. Unforunately, not tonight.

  106. manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:33 PM

As fast as Desi got hit, he returned right back to his crappy swing hard at everything mode.

Play Espi tomorrow night please MW if you are serious about winning.

    • scnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:40 PM

I’m starting to think there is no corner to turn. I don’t know if it’s the weight of his impending free agency or he just can’t handle failure but he is costing us more games then he is helping and we have an alternative. You trade for Paplebon without regards to Storen’s mind because you want to win; show the same with Ian.

  107. Hiram Hover - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:34 PM

Anybody still worried about Zim’s 1-15 during his rehab?

    • veejh - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:36 PM

Right. Nice 1st game. The bats are returning. It’ll take time for everything to sync up.

  108. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:36 PM

  109. manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:38 PM

If Capps was pitching and I umped. The moment he pitched with a man on base I would call a balk. Every single pitch

You almost have to dive into runners to get them. Perfect throw but great effort from the runner to almost deke Desi.

  114. nattygoats - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:42 PM

Division lead down to one game. Ooooof

    • manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:43 PM

    I said this Sunday night.

I believe that managers should have E seconds to ask for a review. No watching a camera.

  123. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:54 PM

How can this team be so snakebit with these doubleplays. That’s 3 tonight Werth, Harper, and Escobar.

  124. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:54 PM

Too ticked… way too pissed off….

    • manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 11:10 PM

Mrs B would be not happy with Marlin hitters.

7 of their 11 hits were first pitch fastballs.

Including first 3 pitches on the 6th, 3 hits.

I am all about clobbering first pitch fastballs as most are laid right for easy hits.

  125. coop202 - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:54 PM

That was predictable when the count hit 2-2… Escobar was overconfident. I honestly kind of wanted a K to get Harper up then….

  126. manassasnatsfan - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:54 PM

Damn it again man on third we can’t score because of a double play or strike out.

We needed just tap that foul as it was not hittable pitch.

I wish hitters knew how to do that like Luke Appling did his whole career.

  127. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 28, 2015 at 9:57 PM
