Game 96: Nats at Pirates

Jul 25, 2015, 4:20 PM EST

USA Today Sports Images

For weeks, we’ve been talking about members of the Nationals lineup who are unavailable to play. Tonight, we’re finally able to talk about a couple who are available to play, and who will play.

Yes, Anthony Rendon is off the DL, having missed the last month with a strained left quadriceps muscle; he’s batting second and playing second base. And Yunel Escobar is back in the lineup after missing 2-plus games with a sore left wrist; he’s batting fourth and playing third base. No Jayson Werth, Ryan Zimmerman or Denard Span yet, but Werth and Zimmerman appear to be only a matter of days away, with Span progressing as well.

The extra boost to the lineup will be welcome tonight, with A.J. Burnett on the mound for the Pirates. The veteran right-hander is enjoying a fantastic season in his swan song (8-3, 2.44 ERA, 102 strikeouts) though he is facing a Nats club that rapped out 14 hits against him last month in D.C. Gio Gonzalez takes the mound for the Nationals, on a nice 3-0, 1.38 ERA run of four starts himself that happened to begin against the Pirates.

Enjoy the game and the conversation…

Ouch: Billy Burns leaves game with “testicular contusion” http://t.co/bVXacKKlie

    Oh Billy.

    • TimDz - Jul 25, 2015 at 4:42 PM

      nuts….

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:36 PM

LOL, there was a cup in Burns locker. Protect those jewels!

  2. micksback1 - Jul 25, 2015 at 4:29 PM

Nats had been saying the Miami series we would see Rendon and others. I wonder if MW has pushed the panic button by inserting Rendon tonight?

    • manassasnatsfan - Jul 25, 2015 at 5:26 PM

He played all week and was doing fine, how is that rushing? I was thinking we needed to quit wasting time getting hits there.

  3. jfmii - Jul 25, 2015 at 4:38 PM

I missed that the Pirates picked up Aramis Ramirez.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 4:41 PM

      Thursday afternoon.

      • jfmii - Jul 25, 2015 at 4:49 PM

Jordy Mercer just went to the bench I guess, but Kang is a natural 3rd baseman–they seem to have given up D for O.

      • masterfishkeeper - Jul 25, 2015 at 5:01 PM

        Mercer is hurt.

      • jfmii - Jul 25, 2015 at 5:11 PM

Is Mercer out for the season?

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 5:21 PM

Got slid into and on the DL

    • manassasnatsfan - Jul 25, 2015 at 5:27 PM

That happened Thursday. Surprised it took him so long to get to Pittsburgh.

      • natsfan1a - Jul 25, 2015 at 6:13 PM

FP speculated, in jest, that maybe he wanted to miss Max last night. Heh.

  4. jfmii - Jul 25, 2015 at 4:44 PM

Given the year Espinosa has had, and the assumption Rendon will be slow to get back to his productive groove (AND that Rendon at second is a defensive downgrade), it does not seem like much of an upgrade. Could either Yunel or Danny be on the trading block? In either case, Rizzo would be selling when the value is as high as it might ever get.

    • masterfishkeeper - Jul 25, 2015 at 5:03 PM

Really doubt it, given that Desmond is gone after the season. More likely that they want to give Espinosa a day off. He’s been playing almost every day, all season.

      • jfmii - Jul 25, 2015 at 5:10 PM

I hear you, but it seems Turner is the man in 2016. It seems that if you do not trade one of them, you are assuming someone of the 4 is going to be hurt for the rest of the season. Otherwise, one will be on the bench, and if so, whom?

      • masterfishkeeper - Jul 25, 2015 at 5:15 PM

As this season has shown, you need more than three infielders over the course of a season. I doubt Rizzo is willing to gamble next season on Turner at short, without a backup, except for Difo.

      • jfmii - Jul 25, 2015 at 5:23 PM

masterfishkeeper, I guess that would mean Danny reverts to the jack-of-all trades best possible bench guy in 2016. That is the kind of bench that an elite team has. And if Turner proves not to be ready, then Danny or Yunel plays there. You convinced me. Don’t trade either of ’em

      • NationalAnthem - Jul 25, 2015 at 5:24 PM

Turner. Will. Not. Be. Ready. For. 2016.

        Stop!

        September call-up MAYBE.

    • chaz11963 - Jul 25, 2015 at 5:08 PM

That wouldn’t make much sense. Danny is too valuable to the 2015 Nats and probably wouldn’t fetch as much in trade value as his on the field value. Escobar is also another key piece. I can’t imagine a playoff contending team trading key pieces in the middle of the season. Maybe prospects, not key players.

      • jfmii - Jul 25, 2015 at 5:14 PM

Not sure Danny’s value is low. I for one, would hate to see him go. If none get traded, who sits?

      • zmunchkin - Jul 25, 2015 at 5:18 PM

Once everyone (Span, Zim, Werth) is back, Danny could play 3-5 times a week in order to give other guys a rest.

    • Hiram Hover - Jul 25, 2015 at 6:14 PM

Rendon needs to play at the big league level to get into form. If he has some rust to knock off, the sooner the better.

  5. jfmii - Jul 25, 2015 at 5:16 PM

The only reason to hold to both Danny and Yunel is if you do not believe Trea is the starting shortstop for 2016.

    • natsnatsnatswoo - Jul 25, 2015 at 5:24 PM

You read it here first: Trea Turner will not be the starting shortstop in 2016.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 5:24 PM

I think you have to still hold Trea back the extra month to get the 6 years + May to September team control.

    • Karl Kolchak - Jul 25, 2015 at 5:28 PM

Turner will start 2016 in AAA as the Nats would be crazy not to hold him back as the Cubs did with Bryant this year to delay his free agency date by a year. Also, Turner has committed 7 errors at Syracuse, which shows that his bat is well ahead of his glove. There is no reason not to hold onto both Espinosa and Escobar for insurance against injuries once Turner is called up.

  6. jfmii - Jul 25, 2015 at 5:17 PM

    hold on to, sorry

    • NationalAnthem - Jul 25, 2015 at 5:31 PM

No, you hold onto both because they’re major-league tested and proven. With Desmond gone, you keep all three to fill in at 2nd, SS, and 3rd. Difo as a back-up up the middle. Turner continues to learn his craft in the minors.

      • coop202 - Jul 25, 2015 at 5:45 PM

Actually the major league testing would prove out that these are likely career years for both players…. Having said that yunel could drop a large bit and still be a top MI. If Turner is the future he’s up in may

    • NationalAnthem - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:58 PM

Respectfully disagree. Turner in May would be huge growing pains… Something he could accomplish in AA/AAA. Better defence with Yunel/Danny and, even if they revert to historical norms, dependable bats.

  7. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 5:23 PM

“@masncj: Matt Williams says he will continue to work Danny Espinosa in the lineup. He will take fly balls in left pregame today. #Nats”

    Back to LF

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 5:27 PM

“MW said Danny Espinosa is off today but Nats want to find ways to get him playing time. He’s scheduled to get some pre-game work in LF.”

      The full Zobrist.

    • masterfishkeeper - Jul 25, 2015 at 5:27 PM

      Who needs Zobrist!

  8. manassasnatsfan - Jul 25, 2015 at 5:25 PM

We need to get Span back too.

  9. jfmii - Jul 25, 2015 at 5:27 PM

masterfishkeeper, I guess that would mean Danny reverts to the jack-of-all trades best possible bench guy in 2016. That is the kind of bench that an elite team has. And if Turner proves not to be ready, then Danny or Yunel plays there. You convinced me. Don’t trade either of ’em

  10. rlndtln - Jul 25, 2015 at 6:00 PM

Danny will be the 4th infielder the role he should play on a championship team.Again next year he will be the 4th man after Desi leaves and Turner plays SS.As we have seen we do not go 3 days without someone injured so Danny will see more action then we would like.

  11. rlndtln - Jul 25, 2015 at 6:02 PM

Future lineup when all are back.Denard,Rendon,Harp Zim,Esco,Werth,Desi, Ramos.Keep Ramos 8th to stay out the base paths. What do you guys think.

  12. rlndtln - Jul 25, 2015 at 6:06 PM

Might flip flop Esco and Zim until Zim gets going.

  13. natsfan1a - Jul 25, 2015 at 6:14 PM

Welcome back, Anthony! And good to have Yunel back in the lineup.

  14. coop202 - Jul 25, 2015 at 6:22 PM

I’ll put aside my dislike of Cole and the Phily’s to get behind his no hitter in his last start in PA

    • homeparkdc - Jul 25, 2015 at 6:29 PM

      me, too.

    • npb99 - Jul 25, 2015 at 6:35 PM

Why? If his stock rises, the Phillies will presumably get more for him in a trade. Bad for us.

I care ONLY about the Nats.

      • coop202 - Jul 25, 2015 at 6:36 PM

Want to make sure he’s gone. One game won’t make his stock, only could’ve broke it

  15. homeparkdc - Jul 25, 2015 at 6:46 PM

That was a good game – Phillies/Cubs – now the Nats have a game to win. Go Nats !

  16. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:09 PM

I am not a fan of AJ Burnett. Here’s hoping the Nats bats jump on him real good.. and start our way to splitting this series.

  17. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:11 PM

So nice to A Rendon in the batters’ box….

  18. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:12 PM

Tony 2 Bags just needs a Tony 1 Bag here with MAT at 2nd base.

  19. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:15 PM

Come on Yuni… Bring MAT home…

  20. rlndtln - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:18 PM

Can not swing at balls against this guy.

  21. Soul Possession, My Sofa - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:19 PM

So excuse me if it’s been discussed already, but I haven’t seen it here.

Cardinals picked up Steve Cishek the other day for a AA guy with some promise but not a stud. Not an organization you’d normally associate with misjudging talent, St. Louis. One might even say they have extra insight into other orgs’ operations.

So, if they’re right, did Rizzo miss one there?

    • NatsLady - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:24 PM

It was discussed. One poster though Cishek had “lost it” based on his stats, but I recalled that since returning from his demotion Cishek has been outstanding. I would not mind Cishek, am glad he’s out of the Division.

  22. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:22 PM

Nice play by MAT. I didn’t think he would get it.

  23. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:23 PM

Gio starts Polanco 0-2 then throws 3 straight balls and a rocket that Taylor tracks down at the wall.. Why can’t Gio make it easy after 0-2? This pattern and throwing all these extra pitches is unnecessary. You must throw pitches that look like a strike. Why waste a pitch that won’t get him fishing.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:24 PM

Sheesh, does the same thing against Marte, 0-2 to 3-2.

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:27 PM

He did it right there… finally.

I just come to expect that from Gio though…

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:27 PM

Gio starts all 3 batters 0-2 and K’s McCutcheon swinging on 3 pitches. 16 pitches in the inning. That’s excellent for Gio in a 1st inning.

  24. rlndtln - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:25 PM

Exaclty. That is why he throws 100 pitches in 6 innings if he is lucky.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:29 PM

16 x 6 = 96 and that’s about right for him. He does better with the bottom of the order. Lucky for him the pitchers bat in the NL.

  25. rlndtln - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:28 PM

Better win tonite as the Dodgers have a real sad starter.

  26. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:31 PM

Mets all over the Dodgers in the 1st inning. 4-0

  27. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:32 PM

Look at Desi… Nice hit by Lobo. I was wondering why Desi stopped…

  28. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:32 PM

Run & Hit ? by Lobaton.

    Nice oppo single by Desi

  29. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:33 PM

Yessss… Okay. Thanks AJ for not covering that one…

  30. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:33 PM

AJ Burnett doesn’t cover the plate on the Wild Pitch!!! Wow, great baserunning Desi. Ball doesn’t get away far.

  31. rlndtln - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:36 PM

    Lucky we scored

  32. rlndtln - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:40 PM

Thats the difference in having an outfielder in left

  33. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:41 PM

That single by Kang is a double standing up if Clint Robinson is out there. Nice play by den Dekker.

    • masterfishkeeper - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:46 PM

At least. Maybe a double and an error.

  34. dcwx61 - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:41 PM

starting to have a semblance of a bench when Span comes back
    Moore, Robinson, MAT, Uggla

    • NationalAnthem - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:02 PM

      Uggla will be DFA’ed.

      • dcwx61 - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:03 PM

        eventually yes

  35. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:44 PM

Nice play by Tony to take that foul popup. CRob takes an awful angle.

    • Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:46 PM

HAHAH… CRob is on your hit list… *wink wink*

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:50 PM

He was not this bad in April and May. that ball was not far from 1st base and he ran laterally to the stands. That would be fine if he had a long way to run. Rendon came right in at the correct angle. Plenty of time to get under it.

  36. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:45 PM

Nats have gotten a couple of breaks… Score more Nats Bats…

  37. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:46 PM

Watching that MAT catch in the 1st inning and he made that look so easy. Have to like that. Getting comfortable out there.

  38. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:51 PM

    Dang, robbery by Marte…

  39. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:52 PM

Nice catch by Marte. That liner by Harper looked like a double for sure.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:54 PM

Harper hit two extremely hard with nothing to show for it.

  40. manassasnatsfan - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:53 PM

My favorite problem is here tonight. Swing at strikes not at balls.

The umpires is giving both pitchers a little space, so with 2 strikes if its close just click a foul if not where you like it.

  41. rlndtln - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:53 PM

Tough to win when you SO 6 times in 3 innings by a 38 year old pitcher.

  42. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:53 PM

    • manassasnatsfan - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:55 PM

He is giving him that pitch. You drive it to right.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:57 PM

Gio has gotten 2 check swings called strikes so it’s a liberal zone by the Homeplate ump and 1st base ump 😉

  43. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:54 PM

Werth is 3-3 tonight so far.

    • dcwx61 - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:01 PM

Zimmerman on the other hand batting .071 and 0-3 tonight

    • manassasnatsfan - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:02 PM

When is he coming back? I hate wasting hits on rehabs

  44. rlndtln - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:57 PM

Who would you rather have Werth rehabbing in Pittsburgh tonite or DenDeker. Why he is not here is beyond me.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:03 PM

Rendon wasted lots of hits in Potomac.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:06 PM

Do you really think it works like that? Really?

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:04 PM

Werth wanted more ABs in the Minors. That’s unselfish. I guess you also forget that den Dekker hit the 2 run HR to win the Friday night “lights out” game to win it and has some other big games.

  45. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 7:59 PM

    Good inning Gio!

  46. dcwx61 - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:03 PM

  47. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:03 PM

Nice hit Yuni… He looked like he slid kinda early… hahaha, reminds me of my childhood days when I would slide wayyyy too early.

  48. manassasnatsfan - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:05 PM

Desi bunted just 2 or 3 feet closer to the line would have been a hit.

If Taylor would put his that far from the pitchers they would be a hit.

  49. rlndtln - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:06 PM

really odd bunt with desi hot

  50. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:06 PM

  51. Section 222 - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:06 PM

Did MW really have Desi sac bunt with Lobo and dD coming up? Smh.

    • masterfishkeeper - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:07 PM

Maybe Desi did it on his own.

      • Section 222 - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:08 PM

Well that would be even dumber.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:09 PM

He did that on his own. No way did MW call for that.

  52. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:08 PM

    Terrible, terrible, terrible at bat…

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:09 PM

That was. I was hoping for an ambush bunt as nobody would expect it.

  53. rlndtln - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:08 PM

This is ridiculous.Desi bunts with these guys up after him.MW never bunts in that situation

  54. manassasnatsfan - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:09 PM

Choice DenDekker taking strike 3 on a ball to close to take with bases loaded with pitcher on deck. Or Werth 3 for 3.

    What is the deal Rizzo?

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:10 PM

No comparison. Werth wanted more at-bats. I’m sure after today he feels ready.

  55. manassasnatsfan - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:10 PM

Gio carries a horse shoe. RBI single.

    Are we paying attention?

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:15 PM

You beat me to it. That was dumb. Need to keep the pressure on Burnett the way he was struggling. I hate letting a pitcher off the hook like that. It wasn’t even a great throw home.

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:16 PM

I am livid right now… like you have the pitcher on the ropes with the top of the line up coming… and you decide to send 1 o the slowest damn people on the team.

        Im so done….

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:20 PM

Harper in the hole. That inning looked like the knock-out punch inning.

Henley has to be kicking himself.

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:21 PM

If he isn’t, MW definitely should be saying to him… you do know the Nats personnel, right? Amongst some other things.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:24 PM

OMG, I forgot, Rendon was on-deck!

He should plead temporary insanity. 3rd slowest position player on the team. It was like when he used to send LaRoche when Henley first joined the team and didn’t know better. By now he should know everyone.

  60. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:13 PM

MAT with another RISP hit! Why are you sending Lobaton? Out by a mile!

    • dcwx61 - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:14 PM

Henley go back to the Eagles…plenty of room in the Hotel California

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:16 PM

LOL, he forgot the situation. I think that is his 1st mistake in a long time.

  61. manassasnatsfan - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:14 PM

Liboton runs like he has an anchor attached. Why send him to be out by 5-10 feet. Handley drives me nuts.

Rendon with bases loaded sure makes more sense than sending a catcher who has just to third when the left fielder is throwing.

    What was the point?

    • dcwx61 - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:15 PM

Way to go MAT but damn Hendly… what are you doing?

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:17 PM

I’m still ticked. Burnett was laboring. Even if he beat that home it was a bad send.

  63. rlndtln - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:16 PM

This gives you a good look at our team when we have the full lineup especially with Desi hitting.Den Deker killed us that inning. We need Werth to expand the lineup now.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:19 PM

Yah, den Dekker looked lost but TBT, that has happened to Desi, RZim and Werth a few times this year. #ShortMemory

  64. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:21 PM

Nicely played CRob on that foul pop.

    • Section 222 - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:24 PM

That was caught 12 rows from where I’m sitting. C-Rob tossed the ball to a Bucs fan. 😦

Booooo. I saw your photo you posted. Nice view.

  65. dcwx61 - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:22 PM

    from mlb trade rumors FWIW

Rival executives think that if the Nationals do make a move this week, it will be a big one, ESPN’s Jayson Stark tweets. Stark speculates that could mean a pursuit of the Padres‘ Craig Kimbrel or the Reds‘ Aroldis Chapman. Neither of those pitchers have no-trade restrictions. FOX Sports’ Jon Morosi wrote last month that the Nationals and Reds had discussed Chapman.
Trading for Chapman might be tricky, however. Stark also tweets that the Reds have asked other teams for three “higher-level” prospects in return for their closer. The significance of that information depends on how good those higher-level prospects are, but it appears they’re in no rush to part with him lightly. The Reds could certainly wait to deal Chapman, who isn’t eligible for free agency until after next season.

    • scmargenau - Jul 26, 2015 at 6:38 AM

I’ll be livid if they trade turner

No walks for Gio. His key during any game.

    Another good inning by Gio!!!

  73. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:40 PM

  74. knoxvillenat - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:46 PM

Den Dekker with the swinging bunt…..doing his best to keep our minds off of Werth’s imminent return.

  75. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:46 PM

Another RISP hit for MAT puts him right around .400

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:48 PM

      Make that .404 with RISP

      Holy sheetz!!!!

      • masterfishkeeper - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:58 PM

Makes you think that batting him leadoff is not the best use of his abilities.

He’s only there by need with Span out. Sure is making himself look like Span’s replacement.

  76. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:49 PM

Nice productive out for Rendon to get that Sac Fly RBI!!!!

    • veejh - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:51 PM

Oh Gio gives up the leadoff single. Grind and get through this!

  79. manassasnatsfan - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:57 PM

Gio shut the Bucs down now.

  80. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:58 PM

    Thanks Clint….

    • masterfishkeeper - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:59 PM

Clint is amazingly bad at defense.

  81. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:58 PM

There is how Clint Robinson just kills his value. That’s a doubleplay ball. Oh that hurts. Gio should have bases empty and 2 outs.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:00 PM

Again his defense is so bad that his offense doesn’t make-up for it. That opened the door.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:00 PM

He gives away 2 outs twice in a week, the last one turned that game too.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:07 PM

That error vs the Dodgers was a back breaker.

Okay, come out and talk to him McCatty… and do adman double switch. Remove Clint.

  84. manassasnatsfan - Jul 25, 2015 at 8:59 PM

That is another double play ball CRob kicks.

I don’t understand how he can miss it.

He has caused the game to turn immediately.

Where is McCatty, going to wait until to late again?

  85. manassasnatsfan - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:02 PM

    CRob you are killing us.

    This is ridiculous.

  86. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:02 PM

Im not even mad at Gio right here. Its not him. Damn if this should be 2 outs but porous D by Clint has run up his pitch count and pro-longed the inning.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:03 PM

      5% Gio 95% CRob

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:04 PM

Remember when you wrote this: “HAHAH… CRob is on your hit list… *wink wink*”

Now you see why. Nice he has a RBI single but look at his defense.

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:06 PM

No, I completely agreed with you… Just joshin ya a little bit…

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:09 PM

Oh gotcha. I never want people thinking I’m unfair and picking on him. I said before that his feet are in concrete but his fielding mechanics aren’t sound. If by age 30 he can’t do it, he needs to be a pinch hitter and DH and reserve.

  87. manassasnatsfan - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:03 PM

Of course tomorrow we will have Espi at first.

    Bring him in now too.

    HUGE DOUBLEPLAY ball!!!

  93. manassasnatsfan - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:09 PM

Desi nice play. Aaron Barrett when on is good, when off bad.

On to the first 2 batter than off for batter 3

    Not often in between.

  94. Section 222 - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:10 PM

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:12 PM

Thank the baseball gods for that doubleplay. Of course a quick meltdown from Barrett. Plunks Kang. And people want to trust Aaron Barrett with a game on the line?

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:13 PM

        Check my comment on 9:05

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:16 PM

Yah, that’s how I feel. It is hold your breath and get the Bourbon and Maalox.

Gio deserved better. After the 1st 2 batters of the game he really ramped up. Dials up a doubleplay ball that CRob boots.

Espi better start playing 1st base. Big blunder by MW. How do you put CRob out there when you have choices.

      • Section 222 - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:17 PM

That’s a strawman Ghost. No one, and I mean no one, trusts Barrett at this point. Well, maybe MW.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:21 PM

He sucks you in with 1 great outing and then the real Barrett shows up. That doubleplay ball didn’t fool Ramirez. He barreled that up and just got on top of it to drive it in the ground. Glad Desi got in front of it and it was basically hit right at him.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:23 PM

        Does Rizzo trust him?

      • scmargenau - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:47 PM

Hell no. I can’t stand him. I’ll need Xanax if he pitches post season

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:52 PM

Would be hard to imagine. When the Nats played the Brewers he had Scooter Gennett in a 2 strike count and Ramos wanted the slider in the dirt. Aaron Barrett couldn’t do it and Gennett blasted the ball.

Barrett is a big tease. Sometimes he’s total filth and other times he’s just plain bad.

I wouldn’t trust him in a key game.

  96. manassasnatsfan - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:11 PM

Damn Barrett couldn’t stay good for a whole inning.

The first pitch to Cerivelli was called a ball looked clearly a strike, but then he throws a meatball a foot from The Mitt of Liboton. How can you miss by that much.

  97. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:14 PM

MW is playing this well but his players have to execute. Barrett had Kang and plunked him then gives up the hit on a location mistake to Cervelli.

All started by the blunder by Clint Robinson.

  98. dcwx61 - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:14 PM

In Rizzo I trust to get the arm we need for the BP

    • dcwx61 - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:15 PM

and we definitely need one more

  99. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:15 PM

Looking at you CLint — put 1 in the seats.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:18 PM

He needs a 2 run jack to make up for that.

  100. conatsguy - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:16 PM

Thank God.. Gio can still get the W.

    If BP cooperates…

    Nice job Rivero!!!

  102. manassasnatsfan - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:17 PM

If it is not clear to Rizzo we need bullpen help he simply is in denial.

Get the deal done to get help.

Barrett is either great or bad and often is both in the same game.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:22 PM

Can’t be trusted in Hi Lev. Like I wrote above, Aramis Ramirez smashed that ball and luckily right at Desi.

    • dcwx61 - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:33 PM

so who can I trust: Storen and Janssen and lately Rivero and that’s it…yes, we need help in the BP

  103. manassasnatsfan - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:18 PM

Carpenter when he joined us pitched well, then suddenly a bad shoulder

Nice Escobar…. real nice.. I thought it was gone too….

  105. manassasnatsfan - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:19 PM

Bob Carpenter is misreading our hits.

CRob you owe us 3 runs

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:23 PM

Only 2 as he has a RBI single so far. He got the pitch to drive and popped it up.

  106. manassasnatsfan - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:22 PM

FP called it. CRob gets a fast ball 3-0 and let it go, but 3-1 he got a changeup much harder to hit.

Should have hit the 3-0 pitch.

  107. rlndtln - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:23 PM

Can not even move runner on 3-1 count

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:25 PM

Exactly, didn’t do his job but that was a ball to hit over the fence and he missed it. Keep in mind, Denard Span has more HRs than Clint Robinson.

Bring on Cal as hitting coach.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:33 PM

Like Chipper Jones to ALR. The mind needs to believe.

Truth is like I said so many times that Desi was pulling his head off of balls. MW did say on his MLB Radio interview that he also wasn’t recognizing pitches but I think the moving head is all part of it.

    • conatsguy - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:29 PM

      Yes you have!

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:36 PM

Here’s hoping Rivero gets the Nats through the seventh inning.

  118. conatsguy - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:36 PM

    Rivero is the real deal.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:38 PM

Out of all the callups from the Minors for the bullpen this year, he’s the only one who does look like a keeper.

  119. knoxvillenat - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:36 PM

    + to Rivero, good inning!

  120. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:37 PM

Nice 1 1/3 by Rivero. That’s impressive. I want to see him in some higher Lev spots like his 5th inning spot vs. Neil Walker. That was probably the biggest spot of the season for him.

  121. rlndtln - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:38 PM

Rivero has done very little wrong but MW seems to not have much confidence in him.Must add on now.

    • knoxvillenat - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:41 PM

      5th inning?

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:42 PM

MW doesn’t trust Rookie bullpen arms. That Neil Walker spot was the highest Lev spot he’s been in this year.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:53 PM

Not many which is how unfair baseball is. Need to see how JDub does on his return. As much as I love JDub, he stunk in the 1st half of 2015 on both offense and defense.

MAT is a man-child tonight! Good job Rook.

  133. dcwx61 - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:46 PM

What does this mean ? If we get Chapman or Kimbrel, i would think Storen shares the closer role at best with
    either and Papplebaum

    From MLB Trade rumors

Earlier today, we learned the Nationals were interested in Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon. Add the Cubs and Blue Jays to the list of engaged clubs, writes Zolecki. Both Chicago and Toronto are practical fits for Papelbon who has said he won’t accept a trade to serve as a setup man. The Nationals would either need to change his mind or demote Drew Storen despite excellent performance

  134. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:49 PM

Now to what I’ve been trying to write. Rizzo needs either Benoit or Brad Ziegler and then need Aroldis Chapman. Needs to do it. You can’t count on Roark, Treinen, Solis and Barrett. Still not sure about Janssen. Thornton’s velo has dropped. Rivero and Storen have gotten the job done.

This bullepn has not been good on a consistent basis.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:54 PM

Afraid Chapman will cost too much. Zieglar is on my radar and Benoit could be.

If you couldn’t get someone like Chapman would Craig Kimbral interest you?

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:57 PM

Yes, I would take Kimbral if he cost less. Don’t want Papelbon.

      • dcwx61 - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:58 PM

They will trade Zimmermann and Difo or Turner for Chapman….call me crazy, I don’t blame you. Zimmermann makes no sense for Cincinnati

    • dcwx61 - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:54 PM

I agree with the word needs. This is a requirement. I think he knows this. .if they get Chapman/Kimbrel, then storen must share the closer role at best so what’s the issue with Paplebaum… I’m not sure Storen would disagree.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:00 PM

Storen and Chapman would fit together perfectly as a lefty/righty duo. He would be my 1st choice and he’s not a rental.

Jayson Stark says Rizzo will make a splash.

Better that Treinen, Roark and Barrett have been exposed early so Rizzo knows he needs 2 to 3 arms for the bullpen.

      • dcwx61 - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:02 PM

interesting…two arms huh….but what about your idea to use Ross in the BP in September and just go after one big splash

Glad you were listening. I sure hope so!!!

I have gone the last 3 years to PNC. This year we went to Wrigley Field, Great American Ball Park. One week in May.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:12 PM

      Deuces has a crew? Impressive.

  136. manassasnatsfan - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:51 PM

    Two solid innings now Tanner.

  137. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:55 PM

MW, do not let Roark out for the 9th. Let him enjoy his best inning in a long time. Hand the ball to Thornton.

  138. rlndtln - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:58 PM

MAT will still get playing time as Werth and Span when they return will not play everyday.I am sure against lefty pitching Span will get a day and Werth for rest.

  139. manassasnatsfan - Jul 25, 2015 at 9:59 PM

The taking of the slider for ball 4 just as impressive as his homer.

    • Section 222 - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:05 PM

Especially since it was a strike.

  140. dcwx61 - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:00 PM

    that wasn’t an error

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:05 PM

You are a nice official scorer.

      • dcwx61 - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:29 PM

it twas hit real hard and to his side but that’s just my countless opinion

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:31 PM

They could change it but I’d say error.

  141. npb99 - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:00 PM

If Desi keeps this up, it’s as if we got another star player back from DL.

    • mauimo22 - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:44 PM

I feel really happy for Desi. His slump was miserable and seemed never-ending…

      • npb99 - Jul 25, 2015 at 11:21 PM

I’m happy for us! We need more production to win.

  142. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:03 PM

Werth finished up 3-4 with a ambush double on a 3-0 count with 2 RBIs.

  143. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:05 PM

If the Nats win this game tonight they are guaranteed to win the season series up 4 game to 2.

  144. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:08 PM

And there goes a clean outing for Roark. Darn.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:13 PM

Hopefully he can build on that. Stranded the man on 2nd. Good job.

  145. conatsguy - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:11 PM

Nats win the season series with the Bucs. Win tomorrow, and Nats have 5-2 record.. Just saying

    • conatsguy - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:13 PM

Whoops, Ghost beat me to it..

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:15 PM

LOL, but yah, that’s big against a team that Mark keeps putting ahead of the Nats on his Power Rankings. Tomorrow is a tall task against Gerritt Cole but Joe Ross has the ability to match him with zeros.

  146. conatsguy - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:14 PM

    Happy Gio gets the W.

  147. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:15 PM

    Nice nice nice nice game….

  148. AlexandriaNatFan - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:18 PM

Papelbon would be an awful addition to the clubhouse. My wife is from Philly. Trust me. Even the great, blue collar area around Philly thinks Papelbon has no class. Total discredit to the city of Philadelphia.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:23 PM

I’m with you. His teammates seem to like him but I’d be concerned.

      • Soul Possession, My Sofa - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:40 PM

“He’s the kind guy who, if he plays for another team, you hate him; if he plays for your team, you hate him a little less.”

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:43 PM

        That’s the truth.

  149. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:19 PM

Rendon strikes out 3 times in 4 ABs and this is why you don’t want to rush these guys. This is a lesson to those who want to rush Werth back.

den Dekker had a lousy game but it was better than Clint Robinson. den Dekker with really good defense and that’s something we can’t say about Clint Robinson. This game was a nailbiter because of his error that opened it up. It was a 5-3 game with 2 on base when Rivero came in to face Neil Walker. Just saying.

    • conatsguy - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:28 PM

Rivero looked like he was thriving in that situation. Body English was all Go!

    • npb99 - Jul 25, 2015 at 11:23 PM

But they can’t adjust against MLB pitching in the minors. They need the opportunity to adjust at this level, and if they struggle for a while, so be it.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 11:25 PM

They are working on timing. In Rizzo I trust on this.

  150. dcwx61 - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:25 PM

    eek…Zimmerman now 1-15 at Harrisburg

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:38 PM

      Shaking the rust off.

      • dcwx61 - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:39 PM

lot more rust than Anthony and Werth

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:42 PM

Give it more time. Maybe he’s been unlucky and hitting them right at people. Small sample sizes.

If he can’t get it going it’s decision time. Calling Adam Lind.

      • dcwx61 - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:44 PM

yes…i agree he will get it going and no need to rush him up until he is showing more
        than .067

  151. dcwx61 - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:41 PM

Nat must be spreading rumors on PPBM to make Reds/Pads think they have other options
The comments here are purty terrible
    http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/07/25/report-the-nationals-have-discussed-a-jonathan-papelbon-trade-with-the-phillies/

    • AlexandriaNatFan - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:54 PM

I personally think Rizzo is too smart to sign train wreck…I mean Papelbon. He may be throwing his name around as a distraction but that’s about all Pap is still good for these days. Sure, he’s 17 for 17 this year. Great – that’s his job. He’s still a douche and gets paid way too much money to be the a**clown he is.

      • dcwx61 - Jul 26, 2015 at 8:25 AM

but tell us how you really think 😉

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:54 PM

Having more than 1 option keeps things in check. They don’t want to give up 2 top 10 prospects for any closer.

      • dcwx61 - Jul 26, 2015 at 8:25 AM

yes. it was either turner of difo but not both…i think that would get the work done

  152. rlndtln - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:55 PM

If Denard was here I would not rush Werth. However what ever Werth would do is more than Dendeker could dream of doing.

  153. rlndtln - Jul 25, 2015 at 10:58 PM

The Nats will never trade for that A hole Papelbon.

    • Drew - Jul 25, 2015 at 11:17 PM

Maybe ol’ Trader Billy will let Rizzo rent Clippard. Boy, I’d love to see Kimbrel.

Of note in Syracuse: The Nats promote Skole to AAA. Prepping for TyMo or CRob’s successor?

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 25, 2015 at 11:22 PM

He’s a lefty I think which would be CRob. Skole’s defense at 3rd isn’t great but he is adequate at 1st. There could be long-term concern on Ryan Zimmerman also.

CRob could be traded to the AL to be a full-time DH. He seems perfect for the A’s with the high OBP. The power isn’t really what it should be. He hasn’t show power to the opposite field or CF and only to his pull-side for 4 HRs.

      • Soul Possession, My Sofa - Jul 25, 2015 at 11:32 PM

It occurs to me that I have no idea how I’d feel about Kimbrel if he’d been pitching for, say, the Mariners all those years.

    • Soul Possession, My Sofa - Jul 25, 2015 at 11:35 PM

Well, that alpha hotel has full veto, and no doubt wants to stay a closer even more than he wants out of Philly. But W.C. Fields may yet talk him into it. One never knows.

  154. unkyd59 - Jul 25, 2015 at 11:31 PM

I couldn’t be happier for Desi, and for Gio!! Error by Clint, followed by a few seeing eye hits, and he was all business, no pouting, no kicking dirt… It’s like he’s growing up. And he’s not giving away free bases any more, either! He’s been really, really god, for several weeks, now… Nice 😜

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 26, 2015 at 5:34 AM

Gio looked great after the first 2 batters of the game. I enjoyed watching him last night. He probably had 7 innings in him until the CRob error derailed his night.

The byproduct of the 6th inning was to see Barrett in Hi Lev and Rivero in Hi Lev. Barrett had BABIP work for him for the GIDP but then quickly melted down but Rivero showed poise in getting Neil Walker. That was impressive in a 5-3 game with 2 on base.

  155. unkyd59 - Jul 25, 2015 at 11:33 PM

    Yeah… That’d be “good”…

  156. janebeard - Jul 26, 2015 at 12:29 AM

Just getting back to the room after the game. And the celebrating, hands down the prettiest stadium I’ve ever been to. What a fun game! Desi is on it, and Michael A. Taylor…whoa. So fun to see so many Nats fans everywhere.

We, in our crowd, wondered why Espi wasn’t plsing LF instead of den Dekker. But thank goodness we were ok without his bat.

i hope Joe is lights out tomorrow so we split the series.

  157. Section 222 - Jul 26, 2015 at 12:45 AM

Not sure if this could be seen on TV, but as the Nats came off the field, Dan Kolko first tried to get Desi for the postgame interview, and Desi shook his head and declined. So Kolko kind of looked around and then walked down into the dugout and came out with MAT.

My guess was that Desi doesn’t want to make a big deal of his resurgence yet. Or maybe he said, Michael A was the star of this game, which he surely was. He made a lot of catches against the wall, in addition to his big RBI hit and his tater.

Pirates postgame radio show was all doom and gloom. We’re not the only folks frustrated with a bullpen. Reminded me of feeling in here after a loss. Don’t they remember they scored seven runs in each of the first two games and beat us soundly?

PNC Park is a total gem and there was perfect weather for all three games. And one more interesting tidbit. They have a smaller capacity and I’m certain a lower per capita income among their fans. But their 50-50 raised over $30,000 each of the last two nights. At Nats Park, I’ve never seen it go over about $12,000, and often it’s under $10,000.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 26, 2015 at 5:08 AM

“My guess was that Desi doesn’t want to make a big deal of his resurgence yet. Or maybe he said, Michael A was the star of this game,”

Nice perspective as our eyes on the ground. A combo of the two I would guess. Desi has a long way to go to get his slash to respectability. Best to stay low and humble.

  158. natsfan1a - Jul 26, 2015 at 8:30 AM

Nice win, boys. Very nice. Poor Gio looked like he was feeling like [Lucas Doody]. Hope he got some chicken soup or some such after the game.

  159. rlndtln - Jul 26, 2015 at 10:25 AM

I go often to Nats games and never see the 50/50.In other Parks they are very visible.

    • Section 222 - Jul 26, 2015 at 1:57 PM

50-50 is only on weekends. When they have it, you can’t miss it.
