Game 95: Nats at Pirates

Jul 24, 2015, 4:05 PM EDT

USA Today Sports Images

The last time he faced the Pirates, Max Scherzer … well, you know what he did. (And what he came oh-so-close to doing beyond that.) So what does Scherzer have in store for tonight’s rematch in Pittsburgh?

On paper, this looks like quite an advantageous matchup for the Nationals, who are getting the Pirates’ Big Three (Francisco Liriano, A.J. Burnett, Gerrit Cole) the rest of the series but tonight get Jeff Locke. Don’t get too comfortable, though. Between tonight’s two pitchers, guess who has the better ERA over his last seven starts? Wrong. It’s actually Locke, whose 1.96 ERA bests Scherzer’s still-fantastic 2.01 ERA over the same span.

And the Nats, remember, still are fielding a lineup ravaged by injuries. That includes Yunel Escobar, out again tonight with his left wrist injury. So it’s Danny Espinosa again at third base, with Dan Uggla at second base.

Should be a good one tonight. Enjoy the conversation as always…

I would go best defense with den Dekker in LF. Can’t wait for Span to return. Hoping when Rendon and Esco return that Espi plays 1st.

    • bjd1207 - Jul 24, 2015 at 4:24 PM

      And what Robinson in left?

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 24, 2015 at 4:27 PM

Best D is obviously Span Harp Taylor. With Span out I go den Dekker. Taylor , Harper.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 24, 2015 at 4:32 PM

BTW, I understand it’s a lefty starting but with Scherzer starting I’m giving him best defense.

den Dekker in LF and TyMo at 1st.

      • bjd1207 - Jul 24, 2015 at 4:42 PM

Yea sorry I can’t justify replacing Clint’s bat with den Dekker regardless of defense. If you want Espi at first then it’s gotta be Clint in left. But that’s only if Desi’s resurgence is for real. Otherwise it’s Rendon/Espi/Escobar/Clint across the infield

      • zmunchkin - Jul 24, 2015 at 4:55 PM

        wrong bdj1207.

While the trade-off between offense and defense is hard to measure in general, in Clint’s case it is easy. His poor defense has led to the other team’s winning runs more than a few times lately. It is hard to say what would have happened if he had made the plays he missed. But it is clear that his defense costs us runs and probably more runs that his offense gives us.

I like him as a PH and a occasional starter. But with Scherzer starting, you want den Dekker in left and Moore at first.

      • bjd1207 - Jul 24, 2015 at 5:08 PM

First, why does Scherzer starting make the case that you want a good D behind him instead of the offense that will score the most runs? Wouldn’t a high-quality, high-strikeout pitcher mean that scoring runs should be your main focus and he’ll take care of most of the rest?

Second, offensive value vastly outweighs defensive value in terms of player valuation. Unless you’re Andrelton Simmons, the majority of your value (WAR-wise) comes from your bat. And I can’t recall which particular games you’re thinking of, but the chance that you’re going to get a fly ball hit to left field that will drop in where Clint can’t get to it but den Dekker would seems TINY compared to the chance that Clint outperforms den Dekker at the plate

      • chaz11963 - Jul 24, 2015 at 5:39 PM

Don’t forget to figure the lost runs with Clint in LF. Did you see him there last night? I really like CRob, but the guy can hardly move. I think there was reason he’s been in the minors this long with as decent a bat as he has.

    • rlndtln - Jul 24, 2015 at 4:39 PM

      espi will not play first

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 24, 2015 at 4:46 PM

We will see when Rendon comes back and Esco is playing. He did before.

      • zmunchkin - Jul 24, 2015 at 4:59 PM

        Agreed Ghost.

When Werth, Span, Rendon and RZ are back, I expect that each of them (as well as Esco and perhaps Desi) will average 1 day each week off with Espi filling in on many of those days.

    • zmunchkin - Jul 24, 2015 at 5:18 PM

Because when Sherzer is pitching it is more reasonable to assume you need fewer runs to score. So therefore better defense is more important.

And WRT games where Clint’s lack of D cost us, how about the double down the right field line that he did not field on Tuesday. TMo likely makes that play. Which means that after the 7th the Nats are probably still leading 2-1. And it is reasonable to assume that Storen pitches the 9th. Are these assumptions? Yup. But that is all we have to go on.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 24, 2015 at 5:20 PM

Z- glad you said it. That’s how I see it. It’s bad enough you have to have Uggla in the same game as Clint and TyMo in LF.

      • zmunchkin - Jul 24, 2015 at 5:44 PM

        Thx Ghost.

And correction: it was a 2 base error, not a double.

Who needs facts when you got clicks. 😉

      • Section 222 - Jul 24, 2015 at 9:02 PM

You think that the fact that Johnson and Motte took over as closers because of injuries and ineffectiveness undermines his point? I don’t.

  3. rlndtln - Jul 24, 2015 at 4:41 PM

You dendeker saturday and sunday where is Yunel. It is time to start to get going.I would rather have Rendon prepping here than Uggla.Anybody but Uggla ever Burris who fields better.Uggla will cost us a game in field.

  4. therealjohnc - Jul 24, 2015 at 4:47 PM

On paper, this looks like quite an advantageous matchup for the Nationals

Other than, you know, the spare parts, baling wire and duct tape lineup for the Nats.

    • Eugene in Oregon - Jul 24, 2015 at 5:07 PM

      +1

  7. janebeard - Jul 24, 2015 at 5:40 PM

Looking at the guys take bp from our hotel room. Walking over in a bit. I hope I run into Michelle S!

If Max does his thing, we just need one run to win.

    GYFNG!

  8. npb99 - Jul 24, 2015 at 5:54 PM

Max, we need another gem. Please.

  9. mrnat7 - Jul 24, 2015 at 6:26 PM

I think, if he still on the ML roster, Dilfo should be on 2B. Uggla has had his chances and Dilfo needs to get ML experience! He can’t hurt us and gives us some more speed. Also, den Dekker should be in LF. With this line-up you have to win with pitching and defense.

    • npb99 - Jul 24, 2015 at 6:29 PM

I agree. Uggla is 1 for his last 19. Give the young guy a chance.

    • zmunchkin - Jul 24, 2015 at 6:37 PM

He is not on the 25 man roster. I believe he traveled to Pittsburgh to be with the team so they could activate him (using the injury exception to the 10-day rule) if the Nats decided they needed to put Yunel on the 25 man roster. The choices for 2B are Uggla or Burriss.

      • zmunchkin - Jul 24, 2015 at 6:38 PM

brain dead: meant put Yunel on the DL.

I hope the Nats make Locke throw more than 10 pitches next inning..

  15. Just. Dave - Jul 24, 2015 at 7:21 PM

I think Harper is in a funk. He seems less disciplined right now. He’s probably pressing because he feels like he has to do it all. I haven’t looked at his last seven games stats, but his average is dropping and he isn’t driving in runs. He needs a pep talk, and needs to relax.

    • philipd763 - Jul 24, 2015 at 7:29 PM

He needs a big bat behind him in the order to give him some much needed protection. The Buffalo doesn’t scare anyone.

  16. philipd763 - Jul 24, 2015 at 7:24 PM

Mets acquire Juan Uribe and Kelly Johnson from the Braves for prospects.

    • Theophilus T.S. - Jul 24, 2015 at 7:28 PM

      No skin off Nats’ butts.

      • natsjackinfl - Jul 24, 2015 at 7:32 PM

They are better hitters than just finished playing against the Nats and the Nats have to play them again next weekend.

  17. Theophilus T.S. - Jul 24, 2015 at 7:33 PM

Notice that when Won Hung Lo or whatever his name is was looking for a major league team the Nats’ weren’t kicking the tires. A case of Rizzo thinking he’s smarter than everyone else. Would have been a less expensive and at least equally efficacious solution to their IF problems.

    • Theophilus T.S. - Jul 24, 2015 at 7:34 PM

      Comment made a side-bar to a HR pitch to a .230 hitter.

    • natsjackinfl - Jul 24, 2015 at 7:37 PM

That is just a stupid comment. How do you know the Nats weren’t “kicking the tires”?

There’s more stuff going on 365 days a year that never even gets dreamed about, much less reported in baseball.

      • Theophilus T.S. - Jul 24, 2015 at 8:13 PM

The Clippard for Escobar deal came first. I believe Rizzo decided early in the offseason that Clippard was a dispensable piece determined to trade him for the first serviceable middle infielder that became available. I never did see anywhere that they were interested in a Korean infielder. I still thinking trading Clippard was short-sighted. Taking a chance that Clippard would not slip was no more risky than betting that Escobar would bounce back. It looks OK only in light of Escobar’s above-reasonable expectations performance and the injuries. If all hands were available and Escobar was hitting below .250 and playing Uggla-quality 2B Clippard’s absence would stand as the elephant in the room.

      • natsjackinfl - Jul 24, 2015 at 8:17 PM

What’s that got to do with Kung ho Kang and the Pirates?

      • Joe Seamhead - Jul 24, 2015 at 8:38 PM

Theo, you were down on the whole Escobar move from day one. I often agree with you, but you need to let it go. Clipp for an everyday player of Yunel’s caliber was a no brainier. It just was. I don’t get your Kang connection

  18. coop202 - Jul 24, 2015 at 7:33 PM

Well.. looking forward to getting out of PA

    • veejh - Jul 24, 2015 at 7:41 PM

It’s early game 2. Things change in baseball quickly.

      • coop202 - Jul 24, 2015 at 7:49 PM

definitely true. Not sure of our record in Pitt but the underlying feeling is we struggle there.

  19. Joe Seamhead - Jul 24, 2015 at 7:39 PM

Wow! That was a shot from Alvarez.

BTW, I detest poor out fielding. Clint and Tyler are both bad outfielders. Especially CRob in LF. Curiously, he plays a better RF than he does LF. Matt den Dekker is a tick, or maybe two ticks up from either of them.

And FP? Dan Uggla hit a routine fly ball to right. It was not a great swing.

  20. Theophilus T.S. - Jul 24, 2015 at 7:40 PM

Pirates playing a SS Nats’ picked up on waivers from MN and DFA’d 30 days later. That’s pretty futile. Watch him out-hit Desmond.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 24, 2015 at 8:14 PM

Big hits by Buffalo, TyMo, and Uggla (a line drive in the boxscore)

  27. Joe Seamhead - Jul 24, 2015 at 8:16 PM

One good AB after another. Give Dan Uggla credit for the slide in to second, too.It played a big part on den Dekker being safe at first, even if Max grounded out next.

  28. coop202 - Jul 24, 2015 at 8:23 PM

  33. manassasnatsfan - Jul 24, 2015 at 8:41 PM

The old 0-2 to a walk trick. Scherzer rarely does that, others on the staff do it way to much.

  34. veejh - Jul 24, 2015 at 8:47 PM

    Helluva AB by Polanco

    • manassasnatsfan - Jul 24, 2015 at 8:53 PM

He hadn’t hit a fastball fair the first 3 at Nats. He out thought himself.

Terrible pitch sequence which was a fine one until he decided not to throw a fastball to Polabco.

  35. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 24, 2015 at 8:49 PM

That can’t happen. Scherzer hangs the curveball.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 24, 2015 at 8:50 PM

Ok, pull him MW. This is ridiculous.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jul 24, 2015 at 8:50 PM

Then Walker hits a fast ball in his wheelhouse.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 24, 2015 at 8:51 PM

Hit the wall quickly. Starts with the #LoW

  36. manassasnatsfan - Jul 24, 2015 at 8:49 PM

Damn it couldn’t hit the fast ball fair, why throw a breaking ball.

    Scherzer rarely makes mental errors.

The walk was an error than he quit pitching fast balls 2 errors to two batters in a row.

Then he acts like Gio after a mistake by throwing a third mistakes.

This same that couldn’t hit him.

Now NcCatty moves. Why is he so damn sliw.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 24, 2015 at 8:51 PM

Scherzer shook off to the curveball. Awful.

      • veejh - Jul 24, 2015 at 8:55 PM

Time to trade him while his stock is still peaking.

  39. nattygoats - Jul 24, 2015 at 8:55 PM

A bit harsh. But AAA lineup musters 4 runs and your 25 million dollar pitcher serves up BP. Terrible job Max. This one is ALL on you. That can’t happen

  40. manassasnatsfan - Jul 24, 2015 at 8:57 PM

Time for NcCatty to get to work.

8 games since the all star break.

Our starting pitchers are suppose to be our strength. In 8 games 3 Quality starts.

When half hitters are out anything less than 67%, is weak.

Absolutely love that Bmores biggest star is talking with Washington.

  48. knoxvillenat - Jul 24, 2015 at 9:08 PM

Interesting that the Nats insert CRob into the lineup for den Dekker (which I understand) but at first base moving TyMo to LF. Does this say that TyMo is a better outfielder than CRob or that the Nats think CRob is a better first baseman than Moore?

    • manassasnatsfan - Jul 24, 2015 at 9:12 PM

      Moore less slow CRob.

  59. manassasnatsfan - Jul 24, 2015 at 9:33 PM

Cal’s advise to Ramos. Only swing at strikes. K on a pitch 6 to 8 inches inside.

Of course I think he needs to move 6 to 8 inches closer to the plate anyway.

  60. Allnats - Jul 24, 2015 at 9:38 PM

I hope we score 2 next inning, because once it gets to mark melancoln, it’ll be very hard to get back into it

  61. manassasnatsfan - Jul 24, 2015 at 9:41 PM

Since his no hitter Scherzer ,2 wins 3 losses, 1 no decision. 3 quality starts of 6.

    • nattygoats - Jul 24, 2015 at 9:45 PM

Not quite 25mil a year ish is it?

  62. Section 222 - Jul 24, 2015 at 9:43 PM

Back end of Bucs’ bullpen is good. Tough road for Nats. Too bad our relievers couldn’t hold the line.

  63. nattygoats - Jul 24, 2015 at 9:44 PM

Werth rendon span Zimm. Can’t help this terrible bullpen and the under achieving starting pitching.

  64. nattygoats - Jul 24, 2015 at 9:52 PM

Max was terrible tonight. The bullpen was too as always. 5 runs in 5 innings is not worth 25 mil a year. I’m pissed. That is not what we need. At 4. 2 game should have been over.

  65. rlndtln - Jul 24, 2015 at 9:53 PM

Mets lose.I guess if they lose every night we can win the division.

    • nattygoats - Jul 24, 2015 at 9:58 PM

That doesn’t make me feel any better. Nats stink too. 14 runs given up in 2 games. Terrible

  66. rlndtln - Jul 24, 2015 at 9:57 PM

TYMO is not a world beater but how can MW time after time use Uggla late in the game as a pinch hitter ahead of him.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jul 24, 2015 at 10:24 PM

Did I fall asleep neither was used as a PH tonight, they both started, so doesn’t seem to matter to this game.

  67. rlndtln - Jul 24, 2015 at 9:59 PM

Next 3 .Burnett,Cole and Fernandez as the Mets have there best 3 going. We better win a couple as the Mets will not lose with those going.By the way where is that special jet for Greinke you guys were talking about.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jul 24, 2015 at 10:32 PM

Mets best 3 played us and went 1-2.

  68. manassasnatsfan - Jul 24, 2015 at 10:05 PM

We get 5 runs. Scherzer only has to pitch half decent and he can’t do it.

This is a much worse loss than his 2-1 vs Atlanta

  69. rlndtln - Jul 24, 2015 at 10:06 PM

Still want Danny ahead of Desi at SS?

  70. nattygoats - Jul 24, 2015 at 10:07 PM

Get the brooms out. This is ugly. Thanks for nothing Max.

  71. rlndtln - Jul 24, 2015 at 10:07 PM

We are not a championship team no matter who we have playing.

    • nattygoats - Jul 24, 2015 at 10:12 PM

Yes yes. Cards pirates Cubs Dodgers and Giants all better than the Nats

      • manassasnatsfan - Jul 24, 2015 at 10:13 PM

Who cares right. Just win the division and go from there.

  72. manassasnatsfan - Jul 24, 2015 at 10:08 PM

Schu must have 100% asleep. Kung was 45 feet from third. He should have made sure MW was aware to call for the bunt there.

Then Harper would come up with tying runs on. Were the guys on the bench and Espi 100% asleep?

  73. manassasnatsfan - Jul 24, 2015 at 10:12 PM

FP like me couldn’t figure out why Polabco was pitched anything but a fast ball.

He had 2 k, and couldn’t hit a fair ball. It made 100% no sense.

  74. rlndtln - Jul 24, 2015 at 10:12 PM

Where is Esco?If he can not even pinch hit when will he play?MW said he felt good on Wednesday.

  75. rlndtln - Jul 24, 2015 at 10:15 PM

Next we will hear Desi should be batting behind Harp.Yes you heard it from me.

  76. rlndtln - Jul 24, 2015 at 10:19 PM

Another pitcher back to Syracuse.Maybe you guys can convince Cincy to take Solis for Chapman.

  77. rlndtln - Jul 24, 2015 at 10:24 PM

Before the Dodgers series I said this stretch was going to get ugly and it will. The Mets will not lose forever.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jul 24, 2015 at 10:26 PM

Nor will we. So fear not.

  78. manassasnatsfan - Jul 24, 2015 at 10:26 PM

MW tells us nothing at his pressers the reporters questions are way to opened ended to get good answers.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 24, 2015 at 11:56 PM

Yep, you get nothing. His Wednesday morning interviews on MLB Network are yawners.

  79. manassasnatsfan - Jul 24, 2015 at 10:28 PM

MW says it is about winning games.

My suggestion than quit talking about it and instead do it.

  80. rlndtln - Jul 24, 2015 at 10:31 PM

    Where is Esco?

    • manassasnatsfan - Jul 24, 2015 at 10:34 PM

He was there. Did you not see him?

  81. manassasnatsfan - Jul 24, 2015 at 10:33 PM

Scherzer felt good just made 3 mistakes. Well we could have used a couple less.

  82. manassasnatsfan - Jul 24, 2015 at 10:35 PM

Who would ever guess Gio has been the best pitcer in July.

  83. rlndtln - Jul 24, 2015 at 10:44 PM

When is he going to play?

    • manassasnatsfan - Jul 24, 2015 at 11:09 PM

When they decide he is ready.

I would like it sooner than later too, but I am privy to all the information.

  84. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 24, 2015 at 11:55 PM

Ken Rosenthal reporting that Nats are inquiring on Papelbon. That tells me the Reds didn’t buy totally into Fedde.

  85. Joe Seamhead - Jul 25, 2015 at 5:01 AM

Don’t think one player returning from the DL can make a big difference? Giants are 10-2 since Hunter Pence returned to the lineup. He is killing the ball since his return. 4 hits last night against the woeful A’s. Billy Burns left the game with an injury. Let’s just say he got a ball on balls in an AB and had to leave the game with a testicular contusion.
