It was a good time to record our latest episode of ‘Baseball in the District’ with the Nats coming off a big series win against the New York Mets, and with the Pittsburgh Pirates up next. For our guests, we had Mark Zuckerman on to talk about the Mets series and the upcoming trade deadline. We also had Pirates radio host Dan Zangrilli on to preview this weekend’s series in Pittsburgh.

Mark was great on the Nationals’ injuries and how that may affect their plans for the July 31 trade deadline. Zangrilli was excellent on where the Pirates are at this point in the season and how they view this upcoming series against the first-place Nats.

You can listen to the show on ESPN 980’s website or download it on iTunes.

Anthony Rendon is not in Pittsburgh. Interesting. Could 4 man bench be 3 if Esco can’t play which seems certain.

    • masterfishkeeper - Jul 23, 2015 at 2:58 PM

Surprising. 3 man bench is very thin! Of course, they could put Esco on the DL and add Difo.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 23, 2015 at 3:00 PM

Or Trea Turner time would blow some minds.

      • masterfishkeeper - Jul 23, 2015 at 3:15 PM

Seems unlikely. I think they’d rather have Turner honing his skills at Syracuse, not sitting on the bench.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 23, 2015 at 3:30 PM

I agree masterfishkeeper. I wouldn’t do it but today’s lineup is going to look extremely AAAA.

      • Natsone - Jul 23, 2015 at 3:56 PM

I’m surprised the Nats haven’t made a move on Demon Young to fill in for a couple of weeks at least. Very low risk move.

  2. Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 23, 2015 at 2:41 PM

Day baseball in NY. Ubaldo Jiminez pulled after 2 1/3 giving up 7 runs. This could push them 2 games under .500 and 8 games out.

    Suicide watch in Charm City.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 23, 2015 at 2:54 PM

9-1 now after Bud Norris gives up 2 runs. His 6.89 ERA is a joke and they say he’s available for trade. Sorry Dan Duquette, nobody is trading for that.

    • adcwonk - Jul 23, 2015 at 3:14 PM

I don’t follow AL baseball so much. So: whatever happened to Ubaldo? After making an all star team in 2010 he was never the same. Was 2010 an aberration? Did he get injured?

  3. coop202 - Jul 23, 2015 at 2:56 PM

Rendon and Giolito for Pnats tonight.

  4. Soul Possession, My Sofa - Jul 23, 2015 at 3:08 PM

As consumed as folks seem to be about this stretch of tough starters the Nats are in, I’m not sure that’s the best time to welcome Trea to The Bigs.

    • adcwonk - Jul 23, 2015 at 3:18 PM

Agreed. Bringing up Trea is a desperation move. We’re injured/battered, but have good starting pitching and a three-game lead over the Mets. It’s still July. We’re 3-3 since the break, and Redon ought to be joining us pretty soon. No need to “mess” with the future at this point.

      • Eugene in Oregon - Jul 23, 2015 at 3:23 PM

        +1

      • jd - Jul 23, 2015 at 3:33 PM

Agreed. I also don’t think Trea comes up while Desi is still here. The team has too much respect for Ian to do that.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jul 23, 2015 at 3:33 PM

Doubtful since Rendon is almost ready but MW didn’t trust Difo to do anything but Low Lev pinch-hitting. A big waste since he needs to play every day.

Pitching ERA splits — each line is for:

    NL / Mets / Nats

    innings 1-3: 3.70 / 3.00 / 3.23
    innings 4-6: 4.09 / 3.88 / 4.10
    innings 7-9: 3.52 / 2.95 / 3.44
