Game 77: Nats at Braves

Jun 30, 2015, 3:58 PM EDT

USA Today Sports Images

After a wild weekend of baseball in Philadelphia, the Nationals now head to Atlanta to wrap up their road trip with a 3-game series against the Braves. Hey, remember the whole “The Nats can’t beat the Braves ’cause they’re in their heads” thing? Yeah, that doesn’t exist anymore. The Nationals have won eight straight against Atlanta, a streak that began with the record-setting comeback at Turner Field on April 28.

Jordan Zimmermann and Shelby Miller meet tonight in a rematch of their fantastic pitchers’ duel from last week. That was the game when Zimmermann went eight scoreless innings, the Nats scratched out one run off Miller but were forced to win in extra innings after Drew Storen blew only his second save of the season.

All three of the Nationals’ banged-up regulars (Bryce Harper, Denard Span, Yunel Escobar) are back in the lineup for tonight’s series opener, which can only be considered a good thing. I’m unfortunately not in Atlanta for this series, but please keep up the conversation as always here, and be sure to check back in the morning for remote analysis of the game…

Would love to see a sweep by the Nats here…enough to bury the barves in Philthy territory….

  2. TimDz - Jun 30, 2015 at 4:25 PM

Mark, as the season gets into September, will the powers that be allow you to go on the roadtrips with the team?

    • natsnatsnatswoo - Jun 30, 2015 at 5:50 PM

At the current rate, one has to wonder if they will even send him to Baltimore next week.

    • unkyd59 - Jun 30, 2015 at 6:16 PM

Seriously!! Is Comcast interested in covering this team, or not?

      • knoxvillenat - Jun 30, 2015 at 6:41 PM

I’m willing to bet that if we were discussing the Washington NFL team Comcast would have at least 3-4 people covering every road trip. Of course that would be only 8 road trips per year but I think you get my point.

  3. coop202 - Jun 30, 2015 at 4:38 PM

    Healthier for a day…. Let’s go nats

  4. adcwonk - Jun 30, 2015 at 5:03 PM

Nats starting pitchers have the worst LOB% in the league (!!) (unless I’m reading this wrong — see http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=sta&lg=nl&qual=0&type=8&season=2015&month=0&season1=2015&ind=0&team=0,ts&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&sort=12,d) (Their relievers are 7th in NL)

And yet they are 6th in NL in ERA. (I guess few guys get on base to begin with? But they are 7th in WHIP)

On offense, Nats are 3rd in runs/game, 5th in BA

    • bowdenball - Jun 30, 2015 at 5:10 PM

You’re reading that correctly. That’s the reason for the disparity between ERA (tenth at 3.83) and FIP (first at 3.14) or xFIP (7th at 3.54). The Nats have been vulnerable to the big inning; rather than scattering their hits and walks over an entire game they tend to be clustered.

This is one case where the numbers and the eye test are in agreement. Why this is happening is another story, of course. I tend to think it’s partially bad luck but also partially starters being stretched too far and giving up a big final innings, and also a couple instances where starters lots their composure when things didn’t go well. Gio and pre-DL Strasburg come to mind there.

    • homeparkdc - Jun 30, 2015 at 5:15 PM

adcwonk – can the LOB% be sorted to match up with Desmond’s errors? Just asking?

      • bowdenball - Jun 30, 2015 at 5:20 PM

If that were the case they wouldn’t have such a high ERA as compared to their other indicators, because those runs would be unearned.

      • Sec 3, My Sofa - Jun 30, 2015 at 5:24 PM

That would depend on whether one meant Errors, or “errors”, if you catch my drift and I think you do.

  5. Drew - Jun 30, 2015 at 5:13 PM

Still no Freddie Freeman – our Freddy Kreuger.

    • zshurs - Jun 30, 2015 at 5:22 PM

He’s not eligible to come off the DL until Friday, and Fredi Gonzalez said he doesn’t think he’ll be ready then anyway.

  6. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 5:37 PM

Espi batting a combined .091 in the lineup in all spots before #6.

Hopefully a reverse lock going there.

    • natslive - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:09 PM

Think I might give Uggla a shot this game and sit Danny….

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:13 PM

        How about that reverse lock!!!!

      • natslive - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:13 PM

        There is our reverse lock!

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:21 PM

        +.118

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:51 PM

+ .142 The reverse lock is amazing!!!!

  7. unkyd59 - Jun 30, 2015 at 6:13 PM

How is it that Bryce is tagged with the Bad Boy label, with this clown in one of the biggest markets… Smh. Sorry for being off topic… GYFNGOGOGOGO!!!!

  8. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:18 PM

Not sure Shelby Miller threw a strike to Bryce.

  9. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:19 PM

Getting that 2nd run there is huge. A Buffalo stampede!!!!

  10. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:19 PM

Last two pitches not in the zone to Harper. That is why he swung and missed.

Said last game his last at bat was his worse of the season and it still is, but it is time to immediately return to not swinging at balls. A habit he broke almost all season.

    Buffalo picks him up.

  11. kgwcoach - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:20 PM

    WILSON ramos

  12. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:21 PM

    Agreed

  13. Jeff - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:21 PM

Was AJ Cole called up with his

  14. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:23 PM

    Crob

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:24 PM

Did you hear CRob bypassed looking at his previous video of Miller facing him? I wonder if he peaked!

  15. kgwcoach - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:24 PM

Clint keep doing that and ghost will let you play an inning or two in the outfield😉

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:25 PM

      NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! LOL

1st base is where he needs to be and I think he’s shown that he can platoon with either TyMo or RZim.

      • masterfishkeeper - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:20 PM

Agreed. Keep him out of the outfield. Taylor and den Dekker are much better.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:21 PM

I’d be worried about that ball that Taylor caught on the leftfield line that I’m not sure CRob gets to.

  16. Eric - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:27 PM

    Nice work, bats!

Look at those rubes doing that stupid chop. Gads!

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:39 PM

Do they realize the racist undertones of chanting Native Americans and what a tomahawk chop is in what they called a “scalping” before that term was used for rogue ticket sales.

  17. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:30 PM

    Nice shutdown inning JZ.

Let’s tack on a couple and start burning their bullpen.

  18. natslive - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:30 PM

Way to go JZ nice shut down inning to start

  19. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:34 PM

MAT needs to learn to read a breaking ball. Once he learns that, we will really enjoy his plays.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:45 PM

What did you think of Desi’s at-bat?

      • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:48 PM

        He’s what he is.

        I want to develop MAT

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:54 PM

I was hoping he would adjust during the at-bat. Once again, pulling off the ball.

  20. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:40 PM

Wow a hanger to AJ that Harper misread off the wall. Now limit the damage.

  21. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:43 PM

    Big crowd

    • kgwcoach - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:48 PM

Well it looks like a first hour NATs crowd😏. We have fans steaming in at least an hour after the start. It one of the things I can’t get use to.

      • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:55 PM

I am always show up early.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:55 PM

There’s more people at the sports bar I’m at I think.

  22. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:47 PM

This inning was better. He gave up the double. Then tightened the noose.

    That is classic JZim.

  23. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:54 PM

The wheels aren’t right for Harper . but at least a positive out.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:04 PM

Because he didn’t run out that flyout?

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:06 PM

What say you now after that catch? WEB GEM

  24. knoxvillenat - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:55 PM

BABIP working for Espinosa tonight, now 2 for 2.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:57 PM

His first tatoied, the second was our benefit.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:07 PM

Make contact and let BABIP work for you. Perfect example.

  25. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:56 PM

    Thanks AJ

  26. kgwcoach - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:58 PM

Yeah FP I think he was frustrated with his throw.

    • stoatva - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:59 PM

That’s what I thought too, but Pierszynski’s reputation precedes him.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:09 PM

FP makes it up as if he was in the conversation. He speculates that Bryce didn’t run out the flyout because his legs are bothering him and then you see Bryce sprint to that low liner.

  27. stoatva - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:58 PM

Pick up a couple more runs here and put denDekker in right for the rest of the evening.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:59 PM

      +1

  28. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 7:58 PM

Desi your turn to pick someone up.

  29. natslive - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:00 PM

Desi still swing from heels….2nd bad AB this game

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:07 PM

Now tied for third in K’ but theothe 2 ahead over 20 homers each.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:10 PM

Back to swinging with his head off the ball.

  30. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:01 PM

Desi must needs his eyes check, he has to swi g at more balls than just about anyone in the majors.

One thing to swing and miss strikes. That is bad enough, but he swings and misses more balls than strikes.

  31. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:05 PM

    Wow Harper’s legs moved then.

  32. catcher50 - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:06 PM

RE: the rundown. I saw the same play, yesterday, while I was umpiring. Game was between two HS summer league teams. Mostly 9th & 10th graders.

  33. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:09 PM

    Nice eye MAT

  34. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:10 PM

I hope JZim pushes the bunt down the 1st base line.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:11 PM

      Textbook. Good job.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:11 PM

      Did

  35. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:11 PM

    Nice sac bunt JZim

  36. natslive - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:12 PM

    Let’s get another run here

  37. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:13 PM

Oh, DSpan should have been called out. Was running on the grass. That just got called over the weekend on the Indians.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:15 PM

Rule of thumb had Miller hit him he would be called out. Umps are consistent on that call.

    • kgwcoach - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:18 PM

I always told my pitchers to throw it into the hitters back. Like FP said its not called else the runner is hit.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:19 PM

Yes if the runner is on the grass. I thought the 1st baseman still gave Miller a nice lane.

  38. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:13 PM

    OK ESPI find another hole

  39. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:14 PM

Love the steal there by DSpan because if he throws down I think MAT is running home.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:16 PM

      +1.

  40. natslive - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:16 PM

Oh Danny…..come on Escobar pick him up

  41. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:20 PM

Barves are giving the Nats presents that are gift-wrapped in the last 2 innings and the Nats are taking advantage enough.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:23 PM

      *are NOT

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:24 PM

I am guessing the word “not” left out.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:25 PM

        Yes, I corrected myself after I re-read 😉

  42. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:23 PM

Wow Espi must have run in 50 feet for that.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:24 PM

Given where he sets up I’d say 35 to 40 feet.

  43. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:25 PM

Don’t see Span fooled too often on plays like that.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:29 PM

Time of day always plays a part . not dark not light

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:30 PM

I think it was the crack off the bat and not the sky.

  44. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:26 PM

54 pitches through 4. Eight is possible tonight.

  45. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:29 PM

Like I said, I think Bryce’s legs are doing well. Not sure why FP speculated on his legs earlier in a negative way.

  46. natslive - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:30 PM

Bryce’s wheels looked fine on that play

  47. natslive - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:31 PM

    Let’s get Bryce home

  48. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:34 PM

If he swings at strikes. Didn’t I say he swings at more than balls than strikes?

  49. stoatva - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:34 PM

Runners on second and third for the third straight inning. Let’s score one this time.

    • stoatva - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:36 PM

Yeesh. Of all the pitches not to swing at.

      • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:38 PM

        He is clueless to often.

  50. Danny - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:36 PM

    Wowzers….

  51. natslive - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:36 PM

Time for JZ to help himself……repeat last game…clear the bases

  52. rlndtln - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:36 PM

This pathetic.Desi is sad.We should be ahead 9-0.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:39 PM

That’s not all on Desi but I think the score could easily be 8-0 right now.

      • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:47 PM

I would say last two at bats for Desi were easy RBI opportunity.

  53. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:37 PM

Damn you Desi. Fast ball to drive you don’t swing. One and high inside and he swings.

I wish I understood his mental approach. It makes no sense to someone who has watched baseball nearly 60 years.

    • rlndtln - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:40 PM

I have watched 60 odd years and it is hard to understand Desi.

      • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:42 PM

Stanton strikes out more, but when he hits it he hits it hard every time. (Or at least it seems)

  54. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:40 PM

    RISP 2 for 13 plus 2 walks.

6 for 10 when not RISP

  55. nattygoats - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:41 PM

This is still a game because of Desmond. This guy is a rally killer a inning killer and a game killer. He should not be allowed to play until he goes down and gets his stuff together. Dispicable.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:43 PM

We are stuck til the end of the year. Glad to see you at a game we are winning.

  56. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:43 PM

Trea Turner is 0-16 now in his tenure with the Syracuse team.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:44 PM

I saw him go 0 for 5 last night.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:47 PM

        Yah, I saw it too.

      • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:49 PM

Stevenson 0 for 5 last night with 4 k. His Desi imitation

  57. Theophilus T.S. - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:43 PM

    Desmond trying hat sizes again.

  58. scnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:43 PM

Well so much for the thought Desmond turned a corner

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:47 PM

You can rarely hit what you don’t see. Try hitting a baseball or even a golf ball when your head isn’t on the ball at contact. That’s what he’s been doing most of the year just pulling off the ball. He knows it, MW knows it and Rick Schu knows it.

Needs to sit out tomorrow and put Uggla in 2nd if Desi doesn’t turn it around tonight.

  59. nattygoats - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:44 PM

I swore I would never post again here. And I won’t. But Desi make me sick. And way pissed off

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:45 PM

Desi pisses everyone off, but there have been nice moments tonight.

  60. nattygoats - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:52 PM

Yes yes. The team has been playing great. So I am just staying quiet. But when I see a guy so stubborn with his swing to not shorten up or change his approach I get irate. This game should be 9. 0

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:55 PM

When playing good speak loudly, don’t stay quiet.

  61. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:54 PM

    Now 2 for 15 RISP

    7 FOR 12 not RISP.

    • stoatva - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:56 PM

By my unofficial count we’ve left a runner on third in each of the last four innings and a runner on second in three of the last four. Not a good habit.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:57 PM

With 2 outs it happens, shouldn’t be with 1 or no outs.

      • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:58 PM

Tonight you might get away with it, but I hate bad habits

      • stoatva - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:03 PM

I like my own bad habits.

  62. nattygoats - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:55 PM

Can’t tell you how awful it is watching a game when played at Camden Yards. A pop up and a good stiff fart and it’s a home run

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:56 PM

Same with the Great American Small Park. It’s ridiculous.

  63. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:56 PM

What a play by JZim on that swinging bunt.

  64. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 8:57 PM

Twice to Maybin he flew open. Means time to start paying attention.

  65. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:04 PM

The Mets have another injury. They are saying it’s Michael Cuddyer’s knee.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:08 PM

      Ouch

  66. Joe Seamhead - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:06 PM

It’s not that Desi has struck out three times, it’s how ugly every one of the three were. I bleed for him.

    • stoatva - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:09 PM

It’s really hard to watch him miss a ball by two feet. Not to mention boring.

  67. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:07 PM

Glad CRob homered earlier as he just swung at ball 4

  68. Joe Seamhead - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:09 PM

    It gets uglier for Ian.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:10 PM

If you looked at some of his at-bats where he got hits over the weekend he was making adjustments between pitches where he was pulling off of balls.

Tonight, he’s off of almost every ball. What has happened to this guy.

      • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:17 PM

If I didn’t know better, I would think his eyes aren’t open.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:19 PM

Might as well be because it’s difficult to hit the ball well when you’re pulling off of everything.

I sound like a broken record but it’s basic and Desi even knows it.

  69. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:09 PM

I say give Rick Schu a pay raise if he could slap some sense into Desi.

  70. nattygoats - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:09 PM

Desmond is absolutely clueless. He should be pulled for Ugla. Or Stevie Wonder

  71. nattygoats - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:10 PM

Give Desi some quarters and get him to the batting cages. OMG

  72. Drew - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:10 PM

Desmond’s turning the corner – and heading back to the dugout.

Do we get a dance with that sombrero?

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:16 PM

Sounds like a hat dance is needed

  73. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:13 PM

What has happened to Rafael Martin? He looks awful. His ERA has ballooned and he can’t get back on track. Comes into the Syracuse game and quickly walks the leadoff man.

  74. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:14 PM

Anyone warming up in the bullpen. If not he bats. At 89 pitches he is good for one more.

My tendency is to let him start the 8th but not 2 base runners unless bloop hits.

  75. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:16 PM

Trea Turner was 1st pitch swinging and just grounded out. 0-17 I’m sure he will have a 5-5 game soon.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:19 PM

      Soon.

  76. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:18 PM

Come on MAT don’t imitate Desi.

  77. nattygoats - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:18 PM

Wow we swing at a lot of high balls

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:20 PM

High let it fly. Swinging at high pitches is fine, but you need to make contact, or it is a waste.

  78. stoatva - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:19 PM

Jake Brigham looks like Cy Young. I guess that makes him Brigham Young.

  79. stoatva - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:19 PM

Bad juju in Syracuse is all I can figure.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:22 PM

It’s been a bad team all year. I wanted Trea to stay in AA and let Bostick play LF. I know some think he will face better pitchers in AAA but I would say that isn’t a given. Some nights yes, some nights no.

  80. Joe Seamhead - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:20 PM

    13 team K’s tonight.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:23 PM

You’re killing me Smalls. I didn’t want to look.

  81. stoatva - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:25 PM

I’ll bet Uggla would enjoy playing second the next two nights.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:25 PM

      He should be tomorrow.

      • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:29 PM

I am assuming we move Danny to short.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:32 PM

        Yes

  82. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:25 PM

Going to bottom of the 9th in the Mets game. Still Cubs winning 1-0

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:30 PM

      Jason Motte in

  83. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:27 PM

My goodness a hanging slider taking for strike 3. They hang them you bang them.

Sliders low key them go, sliders high krt them fly.

  84. stoatva - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:27 PM

My guess is the league will catch up with Brigham pretty quickly. Break looks more slurvy than sharp to me.

  85. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:29 PM

Brad Lidge works for MLB Radio and he did an interview today with Mike Matheny where they talked about the “Cardinals way” and defensive positioning. Fascinating interview. Loved hearing his thoughts on how the veterans lead and teach and take pressure off the manager. He didn’t give all the details of defensive positioning which he said started with LaRussa but he said the players just know what to do.

    • ehay2k - Jul 1, 2015 at 10:54 AM

Well, since they practice stealing signs when on offense, reading the signs on defense and positioning accordingly becomes second nature! 🙂

  86. stoatva - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:29 PM

Too many changes too quickly for Turner I imagine.

  87. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:31 PM

Good to see McCatty proactive there with the bullpen after that HBP.

  88. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:32 PM

Damn it 2 strike count and hitting some one. That is not a bloop so that is one I look at with suspicious eyes

  89. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:34 PM

    3 games up

  90. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:34 PM

What a pitchers duel in NY. Cubs win 1-0

  91. Drew - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:34 PM

    Cubs beat the Mets 1-0.

ESPN says the Mets have scored 3 or fewer runs in 45 of their games.

    Wow.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:40 PM

      Their RISP MUST BE POOR.

  92. stoatva - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:35 PM

This game looks a lot different with Freddie Freeman batting third. Not that I’m sympathetic.

  93. stoatva - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:36 PM

    Good move, Matt.

  94. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:37 PM

MW should have pulled JZim when Markakis came up.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:39 PM

I am satisfied as is. I said once 2 on. With 4 run lead I would say one batter earlier.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:41 PM

I don’t like it but it worked out. Remember that backfired with Scherzer earlier this year as he gave up a 3 run HR in a game that was either a 4 or 5 run lead.

    • knoxvillenat - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:40 PM

      +1

      • knoxvillenat - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:42 PM

        That was a +1 to Ghost’s comment at 9:37.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:42 PM

        It worked out this time.

  95. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:37 PM

That is what I would do, the second man take him our. Both got on after 2 strikes, batters generally get on base less than 20% of the time once down 1-2.

  96. natslive - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:39 PM

    Come on Thornton

  97. natslive - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:40 PM

    Yes!

  98. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:40 PM

That’s how you close the door! Good job to the other MT!

  99. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:42 PM

New streak started 7.2 starters and no runs

  100. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:45 PM

    Hang and bang.

    Bring DenDekker to run please.

  101. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:47 PM

    Lunch tomorrow chicken nuggets

  102. Eric - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:48 PM

No RBI if you GIDP? Why’s that?

    • Eric - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:49 PM

Does Yuni get a steal or something?

    • stoatva - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:54 PM

Just one of those rules of scoring, like you Span didn’t get a No AB sacrifice because he swung away even though he moved the runners up, just like a bunt. ‘Twas always so. /shrugs

  103. Joe Seamhead - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:49 PM

15 K’s by Nats batters tonight.

  104. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:51 PM

OK Carpenter get the jitters from the park out tonight.

  105. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:53 PM

There goes the shutout in the hands of the bullpen. Seen that before.

  106. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:53 PM

That is not a very good start, but if no more damage that will be OK.

  107. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:55 PM

    Come on blue. That’s a K.

  108. stoatva - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:56 PM

Baseball gods throwing the Barves fans a bone. “Getting even” with Carpenter, yanno.

  109. nattygoats - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:57 PM

    Never relax with this bullpen

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 10:00 PM

Relax all day to not relax now.

  110. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:58 PM

Ump waits to the 9th inning to blow one badly. Goes from a k and one out to a single and no out.

    • stoatva - Jun 30, 2015 at 10:01 PM

It’s even worse ‘cuz the pitcher always thinks: OMG if that wasn’t a strike I guess I need to throw one right over. And one goes out an amazing percentage of the time, it seems like, after a blown strike three call.

      • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 10:04 PM

Exactly. I didn’t say it, but thought it.

  111. natslive - Jun 30, 2015 at 9:58 PM

Need to have someone else up in BP

  112. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 10:03 PM

    Simmons imitates Desi.

  113. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 10:03 PM

Carpenter needed that one. Game should be over if blue gives him the K on Kelly Johnson.

  114. stoatva - Jun 30, 2015 at 10:04 PM

    Never. In. Doubt.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 10:04 PM

That add-on run was huge because that got a little hairy there.

      • stoatva - Jun 30, 2015 at 10:10 PM

        Definitely.

      • manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 11:09 PM

Didn’t get hairy, tying run nowhere near the on deck circle.

I at least wait til then get my maloox out.

  115. nattygoats - Jun 30, 2015 at 10:07 PM

    Yeah 3.5 up

  116. ArVAFan - Jun 30, 2015 at 10:08 PM

    WOO-HOO! (TM Michele S)

Any win against the Braves is a good win (actually, any win is a good win, but those are extra-good).

  117. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 10:08 PM

Jordan Zimmermann beats Shelby Miller again (sort of). That one looked tough on the schedule. Great 1st inning by the Nats to get all the runs they needed.

  118. npb99 - Jun 30, 2015 at 10:11 PM

Ten wins in a row against Atlanta is within reach. Hard to imagine not long ago.

  119. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 30, 2015 at 10:13 PM

Jordan Zimmermann in the month of June is like money in the bank. I think that drops his career ERA in the month of June near 1.99

  120. manassasnatsfan - Jun 30, 2015 at 11:17 PM

In watching the Angels game my very favorite complaint occurred again. As much as I hate home plate umpires, I gate the review umpires much much more.

Trout steals second they called him out. Ball beats him but swipe tag misses him. The replay officials of course defend the wrong call.

I have no data in front of me, it is just my observation. I am guessing in about 90% of plays that managers ask for are probably wrongly called. I bet less than 30% are reversed.

I would love to be the replay official. Almost no play is conclusive. Exception would be a hut like Robinson’s Sunday because no correctly placed camera.

Yet the umps in NY more times than not say it is not conclussive. That simply not true. Or at least not true to me. Either something happened or didn’t. It’s not like it might have happened.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jul 1, 2015 at 12:13 AM

In the 7th inning again a call appeared wrong once reviewed the call not overturned.

My slow down frames again would say an easy overturn.

What is the point of review if they refuse to fix the bad calls.
