Game 65: Nats at Rays

Jun 16, 2015, 4:01 PM EST

USA Today Sports Images

With one more game to be played in an AL park on this road trip, the Nationals have one last opportunity to utilize the DH and take advantage of the domino effects of an extra bat in the lineup. Last night, that meant giving Bryce Harper and his sore knee a chance to play without playing the field. Tonight, that means prioritizing defense: Harper is back in right field, and with Yunel Escobar serving as DH, Anthony Rendon can play third base while Danny Espinosa moves back to second base.

Tanner Roark is on the mound for what could be his final start before heading back to the Nationals’ bullpen, what with Doug Fister on track to return Thursday and Stephen Strasburg making what might be his lone rehab start for Class AA Harrisburg on Wednesday. Roark has been a bit shaky his last two times out, victimized in particular by the long ball (he has given up four homers in his last 12 1/3 innings).

Enjoy the game and the conversation here, be sure to check back in the morning for remote analysis and take solace in knowing we’ll be back up and running with full game coverage tomorrow when the Nats return home…

Let’s step up the energy level a bit boys.

  2. Sec 3, My Sofa - Jun 16, 2015 at 4:10 PM

I hope Danny can remember which direction to throw, after all this.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 4:12 PM

      Rendon too!

    • Toot D. Blan - Jun 16, 2015 at 4:18 PM

Or which glove/mitt to put on.

  3. Sec 3, My Sofa - Jun 16, 2015 at 4:13 PM

So we’re looking at Harper, Scherzer, and maybe Storen in the ASG, yes?

    • NatsLady - Jun 16, 2015 at 4:15 PM

      Playing the Royals.

      • npb99 - Jun 16, 2015 at 4:20 PM

Which should help the NL get home field advantage. Not that I’m jumping to conclusions on who will be the NL rep.

      • stoatva - Jun 16, 2015 at 4:45 PM

        Heh.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 4:26 PM

Sec3, it’s a no-Brainer for all 3 and Bryce will be voted in but Bochy like Matheny before him could snub Storen.

The NL vs the Royals + Trout.

I’ve enjoyed the anger of the Orioles fans over an Adam Jones snub to start. Last year Orioles stuffed the paper ballot boxes and voted in Matt Wieters over the Royals Salvador Perez who went en fuego in June 2014 and Wieters played in only 28 games in early 2014 before going on the DL in May 2014. Orioles had 3 starters in Jones, Cruz and Wieters. Of course Wieters was replaced by Perez.

Royals fans were incensed last year and are taking advantage of computer voting since paper ballots are not part of the process any more.

      • nats128 - Jun 16, 2015 at 4:32 PM

If it wasnt for Yankees voting it would have been JJ Hardy over Derek Jeter and somehow Josh Donaldson got in over Manny Machado towards the end.

The NL voting looks about right altho this year Yadier Molina is not the best catcher. Right now Nori Aoki is ahead of Giancarlo Stanton in the NL for the 3rd spot in the NL and Matt Holliday is #2 and he is on the DL and wont be able to play.

      • Section 222 - Jun 16, 2015 at 5:07 PM

When did Matheny snub Storen? Last year he snubbed Soriano, if I recall. And Rendon of course.

Storen should be a lock, but he won’t be. If the Nats can win the pennant, MW can pick the last All-Stars. Until then, complaining about bullpen guys being snubbed is a losing game. Lots of good ones to choose from. At least Kimbrel isn’t a lock this year.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 5:11 PM

No, Matheny snubbed Rendon. Meaning it happens all the time

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 5:13 PM

Yah, re-read what I wrote. Confusing. Matheny snubbed Rendon and Bochy could snub Storen.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 5:15 PM

        *Yah, I re-read what I wrote

  4. Doc - Jun 16, 2015 at 4:20 PM

TRoark shouldn’t be afraid to pitch to former Nat Souza, like last night’s Nats pitchers—-5 freakin’ walks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In other news, apparently the Nats are getting ready to trade Joe Cool and Austin Voth to the Reds for the Big Red Lefty Reliever!!!

Speculation. That’s Rick Weiner’s trade speculation.

Read his article. Funny. Rizzo would rather give him AJ Cole who is in “his” hands off list according to Weiner along with Giolito and Lopez.

      • adcwonk - Jun 16, 2015 at 4:43 PM

        link? I don’t see it . . .

      • Sec 3, My Sofa - Jun 16, 2015 at 4:51 PM

He assumes Drew would move to the 8th inning. Speculatively speaking, I’m not so sure.

      • nats128 - Jun 16, 2015 at 4:54 PM

        Ghost,

You broke the Aroldis news hours before Jon Morosi. Are you his source? This thing has legs!

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 5:01 PM

Nats128, I don’t think so unless one of my people gave it to him.

Sec3, exactly. They would share the roles based on matchups. Both players will have to check their egos at the door and unfortunately that means Drew as Chapman would get most reps.

I’m hearing Reynaldo Lopez + 2 more and I would love for it to be Cole and Voth only.

Joe Ross is a work in progress and I’d hold onto him. Sinker + slider and a changeup that needs serious work.

Reds after the All Star game are going to be trading Cueto and Chapman to the highest bidders.

Again, could happen sooner than later. Rizzo wants it now.

      • nats128 - Jun 16, 2015 at 5:06 PM

Ghost, matchup 8th innings are easier to predict than matchup 9ths. As they say, the save is sometimes in the 8th but once you pick who has the 8th it changes the dynamics of the 9th.

Closers available for trade are Chapman, Clippard and Papelbon. The Reds might not get what they want.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 5:18 PM

Nats128, Well said. Difficult to know at the end of the 7th inning what the 9th will look like.

      • Section 222 - Jun 16, 2015 at 6:10 PM

If we do get Chapman, which would be awesome, I’d love MW to say, “These are two experienced closers at the top of their game, so we’re going to do the 8th and 9th innings by matchups. Both L-R and based on history. And both may pitch for four outs, either three in the 8th and 1 in the 9th or 1 in the 8th and 3 in the 9th. depending on those matchups.

Both have been in the NL for a good while, so there have to be numbers to work with. The goal would be to never lose a game where we lead after 7 innings. They would be a formidable, dynamic duo.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 6:22 PM

2’s, did you read what Rizzo told Chapman’s and Storen’s agents?

        That’s it I would think.

      • texnat1 - Jun 16, 2015 at 6:23 PM

If they get Chapman, they should use one of the two as a 9th inning closer and just keep the other on reserve to use in the highest leverage situation before the 9th inning regardless of inning.

    • Sec 3, My Sofa - Jun 16, 2015 at 4:48 PM

      Pitching to Souza…

They must’ve done like FP says and circled his name in the lineup. Or just helping out his OBP as a thank you for The Catch.

  5. langleyclub - Jun 16, 2015 at 4:24 PM

The elephant in the room is that the DH has allowed MW to keep Desi in the lineup, but when the team comesback to DC for 16 of 20, Desi either needs to bust out or his playing time is going to be juggled with Clint Robinson getting some starts at first and Desi sitting.

When/if Ryan Z comes back, either Desi needs to be hitting or Espinosa needs to have hit the wall for Desi to play, if neither has happened, Rendon, Escobar and Espinosa will get most of the playing time at 3B/SS/2B.

    • Doc - Jun 16, 2015 at 4:26 PM

      Sounds like a plan!

      • rlndtln - Jun 16, 2015 at 4:43 PM

This is our best lineup especially on defense with the DH.Storen should be a lock for AS.

  6. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 4:42 PM

Speaking of speculation that Trea Turner wouldn’t play until tomorrow, he’s starting tonight at SS.

      • adcwonk - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:04 PM

I agree. Besides — winning the division by 20 games isn’t going to help anyone’s odds in the crap-shoot of a 5-game series anyway.

  8. Danny - Jun 16, 2015 at 5:54 PM

What’s Difos’ status? Not starting for Harrisburg tonight

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 6:28 PM

Looks a little over-crowded there. It’s getting time that every time a key player sits people will think a trade is getting finalized.

      • Danny - Jun 16, 2015 at 6:43 PM

Dykstra is at 2B and Bostick is in LF? What am I missing

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:03 PM

That’s a head scratcher. Dykstra? Time to move Cutter Dykstra to AAA. There’s nothing else for him in AA.

      • Danny - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:11 PM

This is his first game in AA after getting demoted from AAA

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:15 PM

We’ve discussed Cutter before. There’s nothing left for him. He’s not MLB unless some last place team wants him on the bench. To move him down is a waste to clog things up is the point.

  9. naterialguy - Jun 16, 2015 at 5:58 PM

What ever happened to t-mo. They should trade him if they are never going to use him. I mean this is our best shot at seeing what he would be like as an everyday player with Zimmerman out.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 6:03 PM

      I don’t get it.

      • texnat1 - Jun 16, 2015 at 6:10 PM

I like the looks of CRob. Especially as a lefty bat. He has hit in the minors, why not give him the nod against rightys?

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 6:18 PM

Sure but split the reps evenly yo get TyMo in a rhythm.

    • Danny - Jun 16, 2015 at 6:04 PM

He’s AAAA and the league knows it

    • Section 222 - Jun 16, 2015 at 6:11 PM

And I think Rizzo knows it by now too. We know what he’d be like as an every day player. Unfortunately, not that good.

And Burns walks in the 9th, steals 2nd, scores the winning run on a base hit. I kind of wished we had not traded that guy for Jerry Blevins.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:10 PM

Which means he’s not signing his contract for $749,500 tomorrow.

Will have to wait for Andrew but Blake Perkins signed for his $800,000. That’s a great job by Rizzo to make sure he wasn’t going straight to college. Now Stevenson was picked before Perkins and some would think he should get paid more and you’d think so but I will still stick to my numbers as I expected Perkins would be closer to slot of $893,000 given his High School status and added leverage. A college under-classmen risks leverage if they go back to school.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:13 PM

Bad luck for Rendon. Barrels that up and right at the LF.

    • adcwonk - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:06 PM

C & D noted that, statistically, he actually is the slowest pitcher in MLB this year!

  19. Eric - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:19 PM

I would be pretty annoyed if Storen lost exclusive ownership of the closer role right now. I can see having him and Chapman being double barrels in the playoffs, but Storen’s been killing it lately.

    • Danny - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:23 PM

Storen has been great. Chapman is another level.

      • adcwonk - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:09 PM

Chapman’s on a lower level this year.

        Check this out:

Storen: 1.11, WHIP 0.781, zero losses, one blown save

Chapman, 2.22 WHIP 1.341, three losses, one blown save

        Just sayin’

  20. Danny - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:22 PM

Why is Ramos still on the 5 spot my word…. Awful AB

  21. stoatva - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:22 PM

Please, please, not another double digit left on base game. Please.

  22. exposremains - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:23 PM

Ramos killing the team in that spot.

    • TheBigDummy - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:33 PM

Agreed. I really think it ought to be Span – Escobar – Harper – Rendon – Espinosa (I know). One less potential runner for Bryce, but a legitimate hitter behind him that may be able to drive him in.

Ramos and Zimmerman in that fifth spot have been dreadful.

  23. manassasnatsfan - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:23 PM

I can only read until I get off work. Was it a ground rule double by Harper? If not why did Span not score.

    • Danny - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:24 PM

Just a gapper that Souza cut off

  24. rlndtln - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:23 PM

  25. Danny - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:23 PM

Knew when Souza cut that off, we weren’t scoring this inning. Weak.

  26. stoatva - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:34 PM

  38. stoatva - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:40 PM

Excruciating. They are not doing ANYONE, including Desmond, any favors by letting him go out there and humiliate himself night after night after night after night.

    • Karl Kolchak - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:44 PM

They ARE doing Desmond a favor. If he gets benched and doesn’t get a chance to break out of his slump he’ll lose even more money in free agency.

  39. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:43 PM

Great, this WordPress on the DL early.

  40. nattygoats - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:43 PM

Why is Matt Williams playing a guy who is gone next year and who is an auto out every time? He can’t even bunt. It’s sad so very very sad

    • stoatva - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:45 PM

It would make sense, at this point, to let him spend a few weeks in Syracuse and crush some AAA pitching.

    • Karl Kolchak - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:47 PM

Especially since Danny E is hitting and they don’t NEED Desmond to start. I get that they think Desmond breaking out of his slump is the best thing for the ball club, but at some point they need to stop the bleeding.

This guy Colome’s pitch count is getting up there for it being the second inning. Would love to get him out of there in favor of someone with a less…deliberate pace.

Good knock, Yuni! An honest to goodness rally. Feels good.

  48. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:51 PM

A Tony 1-bag RBI bases loaded walk. His eye is great.

  49. natslive - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:51 PM

Good AB by Rendon and the nice hit by Escobar

  50. Danny - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:52 PM

To those asking why Desmond is playing, we need him to rebuild his value, so we can recoup the first round compensation pick when he walks next year. Assuming he gets back to form.

    • nattygoats - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:55 PM

Oh, my mistake. Thought we were trying to win games

      • Danny - Jun 16, 2015 at 8:02 PM

Rizzo is always playing the long game

  51. nattygoats - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:53 PM

Here comes Ramos with the inning ending DP

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:57 PM

Always positive thinking. Can’t you just take your negativity over to the WaPo site? They want you there as they lack traffic.

  53. Karl Kolchak - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:54 PM

Is this Colome related to Jesus Colome? They have the same “human rain delay” style.

      Uncle/nephew. Yep.

  54. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:55 PM

I would have Ramos swing here with a 3-0

  55. nattygoats - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:56 PM

Nice job Wilson I stand corrected

  56. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 7:59 PM

      Yes.

  57. Joe Seamhead - Jun 16, 2015 at 8:00 PM

Robinson! I get it why Williams put him in over Moore.

    Was Harper limping?

  60. rlndtln - Jun 16, 2015 at 8:05 PM

Read my responses for the past month.ROBINSON for now has to pay against righties. If it means sitting Danny so be it.

    • Karl Kolchak - Jun 16, 2015 at 8:11 PM

Danny is the 4th best hitter on the team by OPS. He should be starting regardless. I’d have no problem with Robinson starting at either 1B or LF every game against righties, however.

      • Joe Seamhead - Jun 16, 2015 at 8:21 PM

Danny has been awful with RISP. Look it up.

  61. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 8:07 PM

Not like that walk on a guy who went 0-5 last night. You’re better than that Tanner.

  62. nattygoats - Jun 16, 2015 at 8:07 PM

    Ughhhhhhhhhh with this pitching

  63. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jun 16, 2015 at 8:08 PM

Nice shutdown Tanner. The Goat can’t scape you here😎

  65. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 8:10 PM

  70. Eric - Jun 16, 2015 at 8:25 PM

Danny – “Storen has been great. Chapman is another level.”

Uh…have you compared their stats so far this season?

    • Eric - Jun 16, 2015 at 8:32 PM

      Guess who’s who:

      Wins 1 :: 3
      Losses 0 :: 3
      ERA 1.11 :: 2.22
      ERA+ 349 :: 174
      Games: 25 :: 29
      Saves: 19 :: 13
      IP: 24.1 :: 28.1
      Hits: 16 :: 20
      HR: 0 :: 1
      Walks: 3 :: 18
      Ks: 32 :: 47

      • adcwonk - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:14 PM

        +100

you missed WHIP, though — which I think is a very important stat for relief pitchers:

        WHIP 0.781 :: 1.341

      • Eric - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:22 PM

        +.781 😉

  72. Joe Seamhead - Jun 16, 2015 at 8:28 PM

  73. Mark Zuckerman - Jun 16, 2015 at 8:30 PM

You know what I’ve learned in 5 years of running this blog? The best way to deal with a poster who annoys you is to ignore him/her.

It also leads to fewer comments being reported, which keeps the timeline from getting out of order.

    Just my two cents…

Mark, how’s about hanging out with us. Want your opinion on an acquisition of Aroldis Chapman and splitting duties between him and Storen?

      • Joe Seamhead - Jun 16, 2015 at 8:49 PM

Mark, we all love you, man, but the bigger problem is Word Press itself. I see your 2 cents and raise you a penny.

Your commentary is the best of over twenty baseball blogs that I follow regularly, but the WP layout is the worst, imho.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 8:52 PM

20 baseball blogs? Oh my. What are some of the best out there.

      • Joe Seamhead - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:02 PM

Ghost, this is the best, but I follow all that I can in our division, along with all that I can that are Nats oriented. I also follow the The A’s, Giants, a couple of mil sites, and pop in on several others. I’m an insomniac, what can I say.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:07 PM

Me too as I don’t sleep much. What would be cool is if Mark had interns working for him at each of the Nats affiliates to cover these guys closer.

    • stoatva - Jun 16, 2015 at 8:47 PM

I wonder if this would help with our habitual provocateur.
      https://wordpress.org/plugins/ip-address-blocker/
I am not an IT expert, to put it mildly.

This is a great blog and the overwhelming percentage of contributors are good fans, but it can really get intolerable during games threads and ultimately “everybody ignore him” isn’t realistic. Much likelier is the sensible people just go away.

      • Mark Zuckerman - Jun 16, 2015 at 8:56 PM

I’ve tried to install plug-ins that would allow for comment editing and blocking of certain IP addresses, but there’s no way for me to access the far back end of the site to do that. I’ve asked my higher-ups at CSN, who have asked their higher-ups at NBC, who responded that it wasn’t doable.

Believe me, I get annoyed by all of this. But there’s only so much I have control of myself with the site as currently constructed.

      • stoatva - Jun 16, 2015 at 8:59 PM

        Thanks for the response, Mark.

      • scmargenau - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:03 PM

        Ha!

    • chrisrw109nats - Jun 16, 2015 at 11:51 PM

      Hi Mark,

I’m an IT guy who does maintenance on a WP stack. If you have admin access, you don’t need access to the far far back side of the admin to do plugin installation, assuming by that you meant file uploads etc. If you have access as an admin, then on the Plugins menu, you can use the ‘Install’ option if you know what plugin to search for.

There are several decent moderation / comment tools, of which Disqus is pretty popular.

I know it puts you in a tough situation when folks are reporting comments… but the second step to ignoring those trolls is just to stop coming to the blog to read it. I would hate for you guys to lose the Hits / Views and time on site stats if a few trollish individuals chased fans away because the right tools aren’t installed.

  74. stoatva - Jun 16, 2015 at 8:35 PM

Kolko retrieving CRob’s HR ball would make a great segment! I’m for it. Then he could parachute down.

    • rlndtln - Jun 16, 2015 at 8:39 PM

I will take Roark and Ross over Gio all day long. They both throw strikes.

      • scmargenau - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:05 PM

We better not trade Ross- I have a good feeling about him.

    • Eric - Jun 16, 2015 at 8:40 PM

      That would be awesome!

    What a blast Bryce!!!!

  76. Karl Kolchak - Jun 16, 2015 at 8:41 PM

    Bryce’s knee is fine. 🙂

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 8:49 PM

MW said by doing DH yesterday and not running around that Bryce’s leg was tight and that’s why he’s playing RF so he could run around and keep it loose.

The way FP went on and on yesterday, he had many worried.

      • stoatva - Jun 16, 2015 at 8:52 PM

He did almost fall down his first AB. I was buying it.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 8:55 PM

Really? He didn’t look 100% comfortable and understandable as that had to hurt like a mutha.

    Hella throw there.

  86. stoatva - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:05 PM

Harrisonburg and Richmond 0-0 through 8. Only five hits combined. Voth with seven scoreless, but Biagini of the Squirrels with 8. Trea 0 for 3 with 2 Ks. Lot of adjustments, I suppose. I’ll cut him some slack today.

  87. Drew - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:07 PM

Harper matches his career high for home runs – in his 63rd game.

    23 to reach 100 at age 22.

    678 from Henry Aaron.

  88. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:09 PM

Bryce is a triple away from the cycle!!!!!

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:23 PM

      So is Clint Robinson.

Brock Holt already hit for the cycle today with the triple in his last AB.

  89. conatsguy - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:09 PM

Don’t know if this is of interest to the NI folks, but John Lannen has overcome previous injuries and is having a very solid season at AAA Alburquerque. 3-1 with a 3.25 ERA. Hoping he gets a call up with the Rockies. He was “the man” during the early years. Only 31.

One of his teammates is the Shark. Batting 270. The classic AAAA player.

    • stoatva - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:13 PM

Still like both those guys. Don’t want them back, but still like them and wish them well.

  90. Danny - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:12 PM

    What is Bryce chewing?

  92. AlexandriaNatFan - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:17 PM

Love the way that second inning played out. Home runs, bunting for hits and seed for singles.

Happy for Desmond to get a hit. Hope this breaks the “streak” for him. I did have to chuckle at his dance around home plate to avoid the tag. Funniest thing I’ve seen in a while.

  93. AlexandriaNatFan - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:19 PM

Oh and by the way, my favorite play of the game is Bryce holding up on that foul ball and not running into the wall. Not even joking about this. Restraint is good sometimes. Glad he showed it there!

    • stoatva - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:21 PM

Yep. Also glad Span and Taylor didn’t collide.

  94. adcwonk - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:19 PM

    A whole lotta blowouts today

Besides this 10-1 game, Maimi is up 11-9

And the Balt Ravens beating the Phillies Eagles 14-3

      Great question.

      • stoatva - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:29 PM

    • Sec 3, My Sofa - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:32 PM

      No, but …
      from Wikipedia

Cycles have occurred on the same day twice in Major League Baseball history: on September 17, 1920, hit by Bobby Veach of the Detroit Tigers and George Burns of the New York Giants; and again on September 1, 2008, when the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Stephen Drew and the Seattle Mariners’ Adrián Beltré each completed the four-hit group.

  97. stoatva - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:24 PM

Turner’s error in ninth gives Richmond unearned run. Harrisonburg loses, 1-0.

0-4, 2 Ks. That’s okay, kid. Get the stinker out of the way early.

    Ghost posted,

“Me too as I don’t sleep much. What would be cool is if Mark had interns working for him at each of the Nats affiliates to cover these guys closer.”

Interns? Do you really think the same bosses at CSN or NBC who won’t pay Mark’s travel expenses to Cincinnati or Tampa will actually fork out the cash for interns?

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:34 PM

Some interns work for free for the experience. Schulte needs to cough up something for Mark.

    • Sec 3, My Sofa - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:46 PM

Heck, I’d go cover the game if you all gave me the same deal we gave Mark back at the beginning.

  101. Danny - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:37 PM

Turner struggles in his first ‘Nationals’ game, first hitless game in 10 or so. On the good news front, Pivetta and Voth both with great starts on the farm tonight.

  102. scmargenau - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:37 PM

Ok. I miss the drama of close games and the thrill of comebacks.. BUT

    this is nice 🙂

Lol! Roark nearly made him fall

  104. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:42 PM

Roark finishes off a nice game. I hope MW doesn’t bring him out for the 8th. Hand the ball to Rivero.

  105. AlexandriaNatFan - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:43 PM

I’ll take Tanner over Gio any day. No offense to Gio but Gio is either on FIRE or absolutely not. Tanner is steady and every now and then shaky.

    • adcwonk - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:46 PM

Roark, in 61 games, 40 starts, in his career has a lifetime ERA of 2.74 — that’s pretty darn good.

    • knoxvillenat - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:47 PM

      +57 (Roark’s uni #)

It’s amazing how you use negative snark. I think it’s worse when you can’t hit a BP pitch. Who the F cares. He’s HRs off of Gerrit Cole and Cliff Lee too. Do those count?

  106. scmargenau - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:45 PM

    That’s not cool Wilson

Now he got it. Took him a while.

    • Eric - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:44 PM

      Wow, go Espi!

  109. natslive - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:48 PM

I am glad Roark only needed 10 pitches to get thru the 7th but I think with his minimum of starts and already over 100 pitches would have put the BP in for the 7th with the big lead. Course maybe This is Tanners last start with Fister due to come off the DL.

  110. knoxvillenat - Jun 16, 2015 at 9:48 PM

  118. adcwonk - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:01 PM

Does anybody know who’s pitching Thursday?

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:02 PM

      Fister

  119. Sec 3, My Sofa - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:01 PM

Joe Ross has probably been pestering Williams to let him hit for the past half hour.

  120. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:02 PM

    Hit another Wilson!!!!

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:03 PM

I wonder if that’s a record hitting 2 HRs off of position players.

      • manassasnatsfan - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:11 PM

At worst a tie can’t imagine three

      • scmargenau - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:12 PM

        Good question

  121. Sec 3, My Sofa - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:02 PM

OK, Buffalo, come on. That’s harsh.

  122. manassasnatsfan - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:02 PM

    Ramos likes hitting non pitchers

  123. conatsguy - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:03 PM

    Padding up the stats😎

  124. stoatva - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:03 PM

    Shoulda gone for three Clint.

  125. manassasnatsfan - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:04 PM

The ball almost bounced over the centerfielder’s on the last Robinson hit. A good bounce possibletriple.

  126. veejh - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:07 PM

    We needed a laugher.

Now, how bout playing a little bit more even keeled ball? This up and down team needs to go.

  127. stoatva - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:07 PM

Francouer into his second inning of work against O’s. Guess he won’t be available tomorrow. 🙂

  128. manassasnatsfan - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:10 PM

What a draft kings night used Ramos, Robinson, Rendon, Machado and Espi. Outfield Harper, Cain and Calhoun. Pitchers Bauer and Chris Young.

    Closing in on 200 points

  129. Section 222 - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:12 PM

I understand wanting to give Storen some work, but doesn’t this make him unavailable on Thursday if he’s needed for save tomorrow?

  130. veejh - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:13 PM

10 more batters til a save situation. You got this Drew.

  131. scmargenau - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:15 PM

    Era killer

    • stoatva - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:17 PM

That upsets me not in the slightest.

  132. natslive - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:15 PM

    Oops

  133. adcwonk - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:15 PM

    Storen’s rusty.

Only his 4th appearance this month! (?)

  134. veejh - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:16 PM

    Drew was due

  135. stoatva - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:16 PM

Well, Drew definitely needed the work…

  136. AlexandriaNatFan - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:17 PM

    Why pull Drew there?

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:18 PM

Because we have game tomorrow and he already did 20 pitches.

  137. manassasnatsfan - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:17 PM

Closers are so weird. When it is not a close situation , they function poorly as often as the pitch well.

Storen 5 pitches to get the first 2 outs. 15 pitches later Thornton comes in.

Reminds me more of Gio than thing else.

    • adcwonk - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:29 PM

It was just rust. It was only his fourth appearance since May 27. That’s not a lot for a regular closer like him.

  138. David Proctor - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:26 PM

I’d rather Storen get the clunker out of the way in a 16-1 game, but it’ll be a shame if that inning costs him an All Star selection like Mark suggested on Twitter.

    • adcwonk - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:30 PM

I didn’t see Mark’s comment — but Storen still has only zero losses and only one blown save.

      • adcwonk - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:31 PM

        OK, I just saw it.

Note: even after that inning, Soren’s ERA is lower than Chapman.

        Just sayin’

      • David Proctor - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:31 PM

It doubled his ERA from a godly 1.11 to a still-great, 2.16. It’s hard to make it to the ASG as a reliever though, especially if your team has other reps, which this one will. He was a shoe-in before. Not so now, even though he’s just as deserving.

      • stoatva - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:44 PM

        shoo-in

Sorry. Pet peeve. As you were saying….

  139. adcwonk - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:28 PM

Weird situation: a pitcher as a pinch-hitter against a position player as a pitcher!

(Question: why _was_ Ross pinch hitting?)

    • ArVAFan - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:42 PM

Someone call Elias Sports Bureau and ask them when was the last time that happened.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 17, 2015 at 7:34 AM

Mark Langston was the last time a pitcher PH for a DH.

    • hummel26 - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:55 PM

Exposing Ross this way seems really unnecessary. I know he has to bat in his own games, but why on earth put him in for this situation?

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 17, 2015 at 7:36 AM

Probably the 1st. Such an oddity.

  140. Section 222 - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:38 PM

Can’t say I watched the whole thing, but very glad to see Rendon get a few knocks. We need him to get going.

    • Eric - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:46 PM

      +1 to that!

  141. ogremj - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:38 PM

Everything about tonight was awesome. Except The MW press conference. Is this man incapable of showing joy?

    • stoatva - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:43 PM

They’re playing the same guys two more games in DC starting tomorrow. Can’t look too gleeful. Besides, it just got us even after they kicked our butts last night.

      • adcwonk - Jun 16, 2015 at 10:59 PM

        well put, stoatva

  142. Doc - Jun 16, 2015 at 11:07 PM

    Jayson and Ryan who?

  143. Eric - Jun 16, 2015 at 11:31 PM

    Interesting analysis of Desi:

Good analysis, putting in metrics some of our criticisms of Desi. Hard to be optimistic with such stats.
