Game 61: Nats at Brewers

Jun 12, 2015, 5:13 PM EST

USA Today Sports Images

Things did not go well last night for the Nationals, who blew an early 5-1 lead to the Brewers, with Tanner Roark fading as his start progressed, the bullpen giving up the go-ahead run and Aaron Barrett suffering what we now know was a biceps strain (he has been placed on the DL). But tonight is a new night, and the Nats have Wisconsin native Jordan Zimmermann on the mound in front of what we can only assume will be a whole lot of friends and family members.

Zimmermann has pitched very well at Miller Park in his career; he’s 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA in three starts (one each of the last three seasons). And the Nationals could certainly use a dominant start tonight, what with the bullpen still in a state of flux (newly acquired right-hander David Carpenter joins the club tonight, taking Barrett’s roster spot).

Ian Desmond, meanwhile, is back in the lineup after his first day off of the season last night (though it wasn’t really a day off, because Desmond pinch-hit in the ninth and singled to left). Danny Espinosa, after an 0-for-4 night, is out of the lineup. Clint Robinson remains the first baseman in Ryan Zimmerman’s stead, with Michael Taylor starting in left field against Brewers right-hander Mike Fiers.

As you know, I’m not in Milwaukee this weekend, but I’ll have remote analysis up first thing in the morning. Enjoy the game…

No Espi and quite possibly a 1st base platoon but I guess we will see when a lefty pitches

  2. jd - Jun 12, 2015 at 5:49 PM

Blows my mind. Best 3rd baseman playing 2nd, our 2nd most effective hitter so far this year on the bench.

Danny is hitting less than 230 against righties.Danny should play against all lefties in left field.Rendon should play 3rd every day.

DVR and game results email for me again, what with the later start. Also DVR city tomorrow night, as I’ll be out. Did speed-watch last night’s game, after I already knew how it turned out. Meh.

Congrats to Robinson on his first MLB dinger, and props to the kid who traded it back for his negotiating skills and his poise in the interview with Kolko (who didn’t seem to have gone down the slide or donned a hot dog costume but whatevs). I liked FP’s comment about the “challenge the skipper” contest, how FP had tried it last year and it didn’t work out. hehe.

    • senators69 - Jun 12, 2015 at 6:43 PM

Lotta obvious talk about the bullpen. Yes the Starters impact the BP, but this year…
I thought about some of the BP guys from last years team now NOT on the 2015 team…
Here last year, gone this year: Clip, Blevins, Det, Sori

      • Toot D. Blan - Jun 12, 2015 at 7:07 PM

Only one of those four guys is really missed this year. Blevins, Det, Sori…good riddance.

      • knoxvillenat - Jun 12, 2015 at 7:18 PM

Don’t forget Craig Stammen who is lost for the season to injury. Nationals miss him a lot.

  4. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 6:01 PM

Difo is playing in Harrisburg tonight. Starting at Shortstop. Trea Turner will travel to meet new team tomorrow which will most likely be Harrisburg.

    • nataddicted - Jun 12, 2015 at 6:06 PM

Thank you for the very helpful reporting.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 6:09 PM

Happy to do it. I’m guessing Trea will be headed to meet up with Harrisburg. Difo still playing a lot of SS. I wonder the configs when Turner gets there.

      • Danny - Jun 12, 2015 at 6:22 PM

Turner is the better SS prospect, should be him.

      • scmargenau - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:25 PM

I have gone from huge dez fan, to he must go. Wow, what a decline at every level

      • Karl Kolchak - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:32 PM

He’s probably already cost himself several tens of millions of dollars on his next contract. Just glad the Nats won’t be the ones giving it to him.

      • Karl Kolchak - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:35 PM

That was supposed to be a response to scmargenau.

      • rlndtln - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:36 PM

Johnny is perfect announcer for this team.Harp are only hope.

      • rlndtln - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:42 PM

Harp homers then 3 pathetic abs.How can Desi possibly get a 100 million dollar contract.I do not think he will get any great offer. We might be stuck with him.

+1. So happy he held out. What a blessing.

      • rlndtln - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:26 PM

Desi is just a dumb player.Johnny talking about getting breaks. You make your own breaks. This play is causing at least 10 more pitches and who knows if they score.

      • rlndtln - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:28 PM

2-0 thanks to a terrible play.I say this every night we stink anyway you look at it.Something dumb happens every fing night.

GYFNG! My last game watching for a week, as I’m taking my five of my high school debaters to Nationals as of tomorrow. Wish us luck against the debate equivalent of the Cardinals and the Dodgers.

May they channel Will Ferrell. Good luck with the kids at the hotels!

  6. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 6:07 PM

“@jonmorosi: #Nats are contacting teams to inquire on availability of late-inning relievers — both RH and LH — sources say. @FOXSports”

I have heard this for 3 weeks and specifically a 7th inning or 8th inning set-up man.

    • David Proctor - Jun 12, 2015 at 6:21 PM

Will Smith is a guy we should target. He’s a lefty, but he’s not a LOOGY, he’s an 8th inning setup guy. He pitches about 70 innings a year. He’s succeeded in both the NL and AL (with the Royals). All of the peripherals are really good and the Brewers should be sellers.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 6:26 PM

He is available. Nats have been rumored on Chapman who could work with Storen as both 8th inning and close depending on matchups.

      • David Proctor - Jun 12, 2015 at 6:29 PM

The only problem with Chapman is the wait. I’ve read that their owner doesn’t want to sell until after the ASG, since it’s in Cincy. I’m not eager to wait another month, especially since there’s no guarantee we even land the player.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 6:34 PM

That’s what I’ve heard that it would be an expensive July 31 deadline deal.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 7:29 PM

“Jon Morosi ‏@jonmorosi 15m15 minutes ago
Sources: Aroldis Chapman has been the subject of trade discussions between #Nats and #Reds. No deal is close. @FOXSports”

        Boom!

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 7:30 PM

I believe the Aroldis Chapman deal is the one that Rizzo has to do. It sets up the matchups in the 8th and 9th and starts to make these games a lot shorter.

      • veejh - Jun 12, 2015 at 7:35 PM

Ghost…are you watching MLB Network right now?

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 7:47 PM

veejh, just flipped it on, what’s up?

      • veejh - Jun 12, 2015 at 7:53 PM

they were talking about the Chapman to Nats rumors.

    • Bruxtun - Jun 12, 2015 at 7:42 PM

Who do we have to offer in a Chapman trade? I’d assume Lopez and/or Difo would be in there, with Giolito and Turner being off the table?

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 7:45 PM

The Reds want to wait before pulling the trigger. The trade will be painful at what the Nats would have to give up. I hear it’s Reynaldo Lopez plus 2 more. Hopefully it would mean 2 lesser names. Giolito is off the table.

  7. manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 6:16 PM

    Go Nats.

    JZim go deep tonight.

  8. veejh - Jun 12, 2015 at 6:40 PM

OK, bounce back game from that debacle last night.

I still don’t get rolling out Roark for the 7th to try to save the bullpen. Whatever.

    • senators69 - Jun 12, 2015 at 6:44 PM

      +1 Absolutely!
MW is NOT helping the team, IMO

    • nataddicted - Jun 12, 2015 at 6:47 PM

I think it was to AVOID the bullpen, wasn’t it?

Either way it’s a new game tonight. That’s why Baseball is a beautiful sport.

      • veejh - Jun 12, 2015 at 6:59 PM

Well, we knew what we had in Roark from what we saw in the 6th, so the decisions was quite easy to go with the BP.

  9. nataddicted - Jun 12, 2015 at 6:55 PM

    From the Nats

“Washington Nationals ‏@Nationals 27 minutes ago

#Nats Manager Matt Williams said Stephen Strasburg threw 60 pitches against hitters (teammates) at Miller Park early this afternoon.”

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 7:03 PM

Sim games against your teammates isn’t a great indicator on how Stras did. He hopefully will head out on assignment.

  10. David Proctor - Jun 12, 2015 at 7:19 PM

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 7:53 PM

      “Ghost of Steve M. – Jun 12, 2015 at 6:26 PM
Nats have been rumored on Chapman who could work with Storen as both 8th inning and close depending on matchups.”

Reds want Giolito which won’t happen unless it’s a much larger deal. I’m hearing Reynaldo Lopez + 2 others. Not sure what type of prospects the other 2 would need to be.

All joking aside I would rather send them Gio Gonzalez and call it even.

  11. nats106 - Jun 12, 2015 at 7:38 PM

    Just cracked a Dos Equis.

Here’s to the most interesting board in the world. Cybill doesn’t have as many personalities. I was going to add in “dysfunctional” but a kinder, gentler Nats106 seems to have emerged here.

I’d put a picture of Alfred E Neumann up, but I’ll just say. What, me worry?

    • veejh - Jun 12, 2015 at 7:46 PM

Kettle martini up for me with one olive.

      • nats106 - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:04 PM

I was thinking Bourbon, but we are playing the Brewers. Just cracked another one. That makes 4 equis, not dos.

The question now is: Baseball or Princess Bride. hmmmmm

      • veejh - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:07 PM

        huh? Princess Bride over Nats?

      • nats106 - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:09 PM

At least it has a happy ending. We haven’t seen many of those in June!

      • nataddicted - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:31 PM

And who doesn’t love Julie Andrews?

  12. unkyd59 - Jun 12, 2015 at 7:40 PM

It’d be nice to have Chapman…. Anybody have any idea what he would cost…?

    • Danny - Jun 12, 2015 at 7:58 PM

      One of Cole/Lopez/Ross

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:01 PM

Lopez or Ross, yes, doubt they would take Cole. It’s going to be a painful trade. I would try to give them Gio Gonzalez as I wrote above.

I reported this before Morosi and heard the Reds want to delay this but would frame a deal of what they want to get this done. They would also go larger in a deal with more players but not sure who else they would trade. The Nats don’t need Cueto.

      • Danny - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:08 PM

Been contemplating it myself. However, I would be willing to give up Lopez.. Chapman would almost completely reshape the BP for a year and a half, he is dominant. And, I’m sure Rizzo would make every effort to extend him. They were 2nd to the Reds when he originally signed. Rizzo loves him. Lopez is just enough of a ??.. High potential struggling at Potomac that he isn’t a sure thing imo.

  13. donkort - Jun 12, 2015 at 7:42 PM

I hope Harper breaks out, and hits three homers…and gets to at least 50 RBIs.

  14. unkyd59 - Jun 12, 2015 at 7:42 PM

I see its random post positioning already…. Does it happen earlier on Friday…? Happy Hour?

    • nats106 - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:06 PM

Happy hour started at 6. Hopefully it spills over until about 10:45 (Zimmerman works fast).

Unhappy hour was about 11 last night

  15. Section 222 - Jun 12, 2015 at 7:49 PM

Whether it’s going to be a platoon or not, I’m glad to see C-Rob get the start tonight after hitting his first MLB HR last night. I say leave him in the starting lineup at least until he gets an 0-fer. ‘

Sorry for those who expected Espi was going to replace Desi. That’s not going to happen, but I do expect to see him in LF before too long. Could be they want him to shag some more flies before throwing him out there in a game situation.

I’m not surprised Rendon is at 2B and Esco at 3B. Esco never got the work he needed at 2B to feel comfortable. But if Desi gets another night off, I’d put Esco at SS and let Rendon play 3B and Espi 2B.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 7:58 PM

“I do expect to see him in LF before too long.”

      I’ve heard that before.

As a matter of fact, Espi took flyballs in LF today.

Absolutely on CRob, he earned it.

  16. veejh - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:05 PM

I don’t have any problem treading water until we get most of our starters back. Make sure they’re 110% before they get back on the field. 2 solid months, August and September, with the majority of our starters back should suffice to be able to make a serious playoff push in combination with a deadline trade to tweek a thing or 2.

  17. manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:07 PM

In honor of Aaron Barrett one of the others should do a National Athem standoff.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:09 PM

How’s about not, and say we did.

      • manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:17 PM

I am for it. Won each time we did it.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:19 PM

All I know each time Barrett did that he went into a funk.

  18. manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:07 PM

In honor of Aaron Barrett one of the others should do a National Athem standoff.

    Maybe Carpenter as the replacement.

  19. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:12 PM

    #LoW!!!! Make them pay Nats!

  20. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:21 PM

Why didn’t you take that ball yourself Desi? Come on.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:23 PM

Now you made a tailor made doubleplay into a high stress inning. This is just stupid.

      • veejh - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:24 PM

I doubt this would have happened with Espi in.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:25 PM

I just don’t get it. Rendon was shocked to be flipped the ball. Lucky he didn’t drop it.

      • veejh - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:26 PM

Looks like Dez bobbled it and thought tossing it to Rendon was the move.

  21. veejh - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:22 PM

Dez must be rusty from that day off

  22. dcwx61 - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:22 PM

  23. Joe Seamhead - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:22 PM

    Terrible form by Desmond.

  24. scmargenau - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:23 PM

  25. Joe Seamhead - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:24 PM

For is right on regarding the “play” by Ian Desmond.

    • Joe Seamhead - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:25 PM

FP is right, Every one of these extra pitches are on Desi.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:26 PM

Of course he’s right and that doesn’t take a brain surgeon. Tailor-made doubleplay.

    All these extra pitches…

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:29 PM

Hard to believe this poor play starts in the 1st inning. I can’t believe the AA mistakes.

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:30 PM

I keep telling myself that this is a good team playing poorly…. im trying to convince myself that it’s a good team….

And please, anyone, save the whole LOD talk…

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:33 PM

I keep sticking up for Desi but some plays defy a logical explanation. I saw a kid do this the other day when he was 4 feet from the base. That kid was a kid and not a pro. JZim deserved better than that.

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:36 PM

        This sh!t just gets old… its tiring…

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:38 PM

Exactly. It’s too much of just stupidity. Tailor-made.

  29. Joe Seamhead - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:29 PM

2-0 Brewers is all on Desmond. Bench him, trade him, send him to Syracuse, I don’t care. Get him out of there

    • scmargenau - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:32 PM

I love me some angry seamhead. I agree. I’m at WOB and just livid the Jordan has to stop free from such brain cramps

      • Joe Seamhead - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:48 PM

And as emotional as I get, rarely express anger at a player. That said? I’m pissed. That was just a crappy play.

  30. rlndtln - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:30 PM

More like 20 extra pitches and counting.Desi plays and bats scared

  31. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:30 PM

Doesn’t even get scored an error. You get the doubleplay ball you want and it goes down in the books as a 6-4 groundout.

  32. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:33 PM

If Desi can somehow score 3 runs, some of this will be forgiven… 31 pitch first inning… tough tough tough….

  33. veejh - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:35 PM

    Hoppah!

  34. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:35 PM

  35. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:35 PM

Then I have to listen to Johnny Holliday who I also love call that a line drive. No, that was a majestic fly for a HR.

    • stoatva - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:42 PM

I had to turn it off in the bottom of the first. Anyone on this blog (well, with one exception) could do a better job of announcing than that superannuated dim bulb.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:47 PM

FP is giving a great education on bratwursts and just allows Johnny to talk.

      • stoatva - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:49 PM

        What’s he gonna do?

Reminds me of the old monster dot com “I work with monkeys” ads.

    • Joe Seamhead - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:03 PM

Just like last night when Robinson hit one to the second deck. Pathetic…

  36. veejh - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:38 PM

So, every day, the case to start Espi over Dez continues to gain steam. When is the tipping point? Aren’t we trying to win, rather than cottle a player that decided to hold out over a team that gave him so many opportunities to grow even when he completely sucked? This is becoming irritating to me.

    • nats106 - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:46 PM

Desi-On his way to another golden sombrero!

If bad plays were hits, he’d be hitting over 400

Harper won’t see another pitch worth swinging at. That homer was on a pitch up in the zone.

  37. TimDz - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:39 PM

Blast one out, Desi and we’ll forgive you…..

    • Joe Seamhead - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:51 PM

Not me. I have never trashed him, but he is not giving us the best chance to win.

  38. natslive - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:39 PM

Way to go Harp! That’s our offense. Wonder how many of the HR are solo bet at least 1/2.

Big K of Lucroy to end the 2nd.

  42. Karl Kolchak - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:50 PM

I remember reading somewhere awhile back a rumor that Desi wanted to be Jeter’s successor as the SS. Well, all I can say is I hope they open that checkbook WIDE for him so they don’t have enough down the road to pay Bryce.

  43. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:56 PM

The good news is Bryce will be up 3rd in the top of the 4th.

  44. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 8:58 PM

Felix Hernandez gave up 8 runs and was pulled after 1/3 of an inning.

  45. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:02 PM

JZim needs a pitcher’s best friend here doubleplay.

  46. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:04 PM

Good Desi just got 1 in the + column.

  47. scmargenau - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:05 PM

    Huge call. Good challenge

  48. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:05 PM

Nice to see replay work swiftly to overturn that.

  49. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:06 PM

Johnny, there is no more selling plays that are subject to replay.

  50. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:07 PM

I think that was a slow curve by JZim to K on Lind. That was nice. Great time to throw that.

  51. scmargenau - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:09 PM

    BP

    • rlndtln - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:14 PM

We do not even have above average starting pitcher. And I do not want to hear Stras and Fister are on dl.They both were awful before dl.starting pitching C only because of Scherzer.Bullpen F.defense D and hitting c- only because of Harp other wise D.Base running D and that is kind. All the talk on injuries are meaningless.

  52. Karl Kolchak - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:12 PM

Yet another bad play by Desmond. Sure glad he got the night off last night so he’s fully rested.

  53. Joe Seamhead - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:12 PM

OK, Ian? Taylor couldn’t have hit you with.a better relay. That throw to the plate was awful.Bench him. Send him down. Trade him, I don’t care. Get him out of there.

  54. loudounhound - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:14 PM

JZim is just not sharp tonight

    • rlndtln - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:21 PM

Imagine if Harp had a little help.Johnny is an embarrassment.Nearly senile.

  55. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:15 PM

70 pitches thru the 3rd… I hope he can make it 5 at least.

  56. David Proctor - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:16 PM

Desmond is absolutely responsible for the first inning and those two runs, but Jordan isn’t exactly pitching well either. As with last night, there’s blame to go around.

  57. Joe Seamhead - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:17 PM

OK. I am obviously pissed. See you all after the game. But before I sign off I will tell you Desi’s air headedness started in Viera. His head is where the sun doesn’t shine.

  58. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:17 PM

I cant believe the Nats are playing like this…. against the Brewers.. what the hell is going to happen when they play the Dodgers/Giants/Cards..

  59. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:18 PM

Another #LoW given up by Fiers. Great AB by Rendon. Nats need a few hits here.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:20 PM

That Harper single just clears over Gennett at 2nd base.

  60. AlexandriaNatFan - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:20 PM

Have a good feeling about this issue since we started it with a walk!

    • AlexandriaNatFan - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:21 PM

  63. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:21 PM

Robbery by Gennett. Are you kidding me.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:32 PM

Other team have done better job all year than we have stopping plays.

They are positioned much better than our players are.

It is not bad luck. The other team’s advance scouts are out scouting ours.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:34 PM

I have to agree. The other team’s seem hungrier to lay out. I can’t understand what just happened on that liner out to Michael Taylor. Seemed happy to play it on a bounce instead of charging it aggressively.

  64. manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:22 PM

Desi’s screwup caused 22 extra pitches. But then again JZ would get Lind to ground out the next pitch he could have bailed out Desi.

On the other hand JZ 76 pitches in 3 innings. Take away the 22 its still 54. Way to high.

The starters have been doing this the whole bad streak. Way to many pitches.

Could they start cutting to 12 or 13 inning. That is not to much to ask.

  65. rlndtln - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:25 PM

We are the Phillies with Harper.

  66. AlexandriaNatFan - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:26 PM

Love JZimm – but the Brewers are hitting line drives off him tonight. Line drive single and gappers. Hmm…

    • scmargenau - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:33 PM

      Well, not pitchers at least

  69. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:33 PM

That looked like a ball I thought Taylor should have been on. What happened there.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:36 PM

      Positioning again. Was to deep.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:38 PM

He was deep but the ball was hit 15 feet from him. He didn’t make an aggressive move, rather moved back on it. I’ve seen Parra make a tougher play last night. Get your angle and 3 steps and dive.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:42 PM

There’s another one. Just very nonchalant by Michael A Taylor. This is why Rizzo aggressively drafted Andrew Stevenson to get an outfielder who will go for it. I think Rizzo said “100 MPH with his hair on fire”

      • Joe Seamhead - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:59 PM

Nonsense. There is nobody behind him if the ball gets by him. You are smart about a lot of things baseball wise, but you are often wrong regarding outfielding fundamentals. You just are.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:02 PM

Watch it. No first move. That was 15 feet away. He played it safe. They had a great camera view. I’m not saying it was catchable but after he sauntered to it you saw it bounced once and he gloved it. I just want to see effort.

      • Joe Seamhead - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:12 PM

I went back and watched it. I disagree.Maybe if the game was on the line you try to dive and catch that ball, but that wasn’t the case. How did you feel about Harper’s throw to the plate right before that play

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:15 PM

Did I say he should have caught it? I said he was nonchalant. 15 feet away. He played it safe, ok. That’s the answer. Nothing to disagree about Joe. Not everything is a freaking arguement. Pound on a wall because I’m sick and tired of your constant bullsh!t.

      • Joe Seamhead - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:23 PM

That looked like a ball I thought Taylor should have been on. What happened there.

Gee why would I have thought you said he should have caught it?

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:25 PM

Never said it but everything with you has to be an arguement. I wanted to see more effort. He played it like it was a 2 out single and nobody on base.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:39 PM

Did you see how Bryce sold out there. He was in a little better position and hit to his glove side but that was aggressive and he got it. I’m looking for effort here. Outside of Bryce, I don’t see guys who seem to be willing to go for it.

      • Joe Seamhead - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:43 PM

        Ghost of Steve M. – Jun 12, 2015 at 9:33 PM
That looked like a ball I thought Taylor should have been on. What happened there
        ———————.

        Never said it? Really?

Nobody on here is allowed to disagree with you. I admit to be being often wrong, but God forbid if I, or anybody else, should ever disagree with you.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:46 PM

“Should have been on” NOT should have caught. You do this often. Stop putting words in my mouth. If I wanted to say “should have caught it” I would have written that. Clearly I didn’t and don’t appreciate my words being twisted.

You do this often and there’s nothing to disagree about because clearly I never said anything more than what I said about nonchalant effort.

        Compare that to Harper’s play.

  70. David Proctor - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:33 PM

Harper overshooting the cutoff man costs us a run. So three of the five runs are a direct result of bad defense. And Jordan was pretty bad himself. Unreal.

    • rlndtln - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:35 PM

The good news if you can call it that is nobody will pay big bucks to desi and jzm and we can resign them.

      • Karl Kolchak - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:58 PM

Why in the heck would we WANT Desmond back at this point?

As for JZ, his season overall has been okay. And given his track record that will still be enough for him to land a nine figure contract somewhere this offseason.

      • Karl Kolchak - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:58 PM

Something is wrong with the “reply” buttons. That was a response to rindtin.

      • rlndtln - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:59 PM

        Maybe.

      • rlndtln - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:24 PM

        When does this torture end.

      • scmargenau - Jun 13, 2015 at 12:28 AM

R u crazy??? Why would we resign them?

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:37 PM

      Not after Parra’s hit.

      • David Proctor - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:39 PM

It was still yet another poor defensive play. Harper’s literally our only offense so I can’t get on him too much, but he has to hit the cutoff man.

      • manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:24 PM

Not a good play, but not the main problem tonight.

      • rlndtln - Jun 12, 2015 at 11:09 PM

How can you keep playing Desi?Put him out of his misery.

      • infideljack - Jun 12, 2015 at 11:37 PM

If anyone else on this team was above AAAA functional, I would worry about Harper hitting the cutoff.
Maybe Rendon will be back to normal soon and he can bat behind Harper. Espinosa needs to replace Desmond and bat behind Rendon and Harper. If RZim ever gets it together that may change. Meanwhile there are no better options.

      • manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 11:50 PM

Put Desmond in the package for Chapman. They need a SS. We can even pay most of his salary.

      • Joe Seamhead - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:41 PM

        + 1 DP

      • rlndtln - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:55 PM

Why does anybody ever pitch to Harp? They should walk him every time with the guys hitting behind him.

  71. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:34 PM

Jordan lasted 3.1 innings…. 3.1…. If Desi doesn’t screw up the DP, I see this going totally different…

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:41 PM

Desi screwed up no doubt, but 2014 JZ pitches threw this 2015 hasn’t

  72. Joe Seamhead - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:35 PM

Sorry, I’m back. Ghost? That was an an example by Harper on a throw that should’ve been lower so as it could be cut off. Instead, a single went to second and then scored on the next hit. Bad fundamental baseball.

    • rlndtln - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:37 PM

      They would have scored anyway.

      • manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:39 PM

Originally cost us an, but not after Parra’s hit.

      • Joe Seamhead - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:40 PM

But not two runs. The runner second runner would have been held on first if Bryce had made a fundamentally correct throw in.

  73. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:36 PM

Why the switch at 1st base?

    • rlndtln - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:37 PM

      meaningless

      • manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 11:18 PM

        Moore did homer.

  74. knoxvillenat - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:37 PM

Second and third one out in a 1 run ball game. Why didn’t the Nats walk Lucroy in that situation and set up a potential DP? Pretty obvious JZ didn’t have it tonight (Desmond faux pas in the first didn’t help), so important to minimize the damage which Nats fail to do, again.

    • rlndtln - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:38 PM

      And pitch to lefty Parra?

      • manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:40 PM

Why not just pitch correctly none of this happens.

  75. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:43 PM

    • rlndtln - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:47 PM

I keep saying the same thing. We stink. The BP is laughable.Mike Rizzo is a genus? He has not won and put together an awful BP.When this is all over you will be rebuilding.Read my past posts and I have said we had our chances in 12 and 14 and we were better than the Giants and lost without winning a playoff series.

      • manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:59 PM

I bet we make the playoffs.

  77. loudounhound - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:43 PM

Yikes! We flat out suck right now.

  78. David Proctor - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:44 PM

And the bullpen pours gasoline on the fire as per usual. Every single part of this team is bad right now. There’s no other way to put it. Offense, defense, rotation, bullpen. There is no bright spot beyond Harper and Scherzer. There’s really not.

    • Karl Kolchak - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:46 PM

      Storen.

Who could be a valuable trade chip if the bottom completely falls out before 7/31.

      • David Proctor - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:47 PM

The Nats are going to buy to fill their holes, not sell. Thanks to the horrible NL East, they’re in perfectly fine shape as far as the standings.

  79. Joe Seamhead - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:44 PM

You all that are saying that Harper’s throw to the plate didn’t matter are totally clueless.

    • rlndtln - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:53 PM

you are behind 7-2 and have 2 hits.Nothing matters when you pitch, hit and field like we have tonite. What you do not understand is we will always find a way to lose.

      • Joe Seamhead - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:03 PM

We weren’t behind 7-2 when Bryce air mailed the ball home. It was still a close game.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:57 PM

It matter, but relative of all the other things that happened I would say 2%

  80. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:44 PM

Toronto was behind the Red Sox 8-1. Now lead 11-8. Plenty of time left if this team gets their heads out of their backsides.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:47 PM

      Make it 13-8

    • Karl Kolchak - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:47 PM

I’m afraid we already had our 13-12 miracle comeback. Rarely does a team get more than one of those per season.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:49 PM

Down by 5 here. I wouldn’t call that a miracle comeback.

    • Mrsb loves the Nats - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:52 PM

Uhm…. the problem with that us our bullpen is …. well our bull pen…

      We will see… but I just don’t know…

      • manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:55 PM

See my comment on the starters. They have been as big a problem. Way too many pitches per inning. All of them.

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:05 PM

I know the point… but its irrelevant right now as the BP still has a job to do…. which they didn’t do…

  81. jmnwman1 - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:46 PM

Keep pulling this crap and Harper will be in pinstripes in a few years. As the sole offense (both hits), he’s gotta be at least the second-most frustrated player on the team right now, after maybe JZimm.

  82. senators69 - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:52 PM

This is not me…but I once had a Yankees fan tell me he did not start watching baseball until August.
I’m beginning to think that approach may save me some fan pain!
I know injuries have been a key, but few have stepped up and fundamentals continue to be failed.
    Where to begin…
Is Matt Williams up to the task? (I have my doubts)
Will Matt Williams be fired? (Probably not this year, but he’s signed through 2016)
Will Rizzo seriously mortgage the future? (I hope not.)

  83. manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:52 PM

Tell me that the bullpen is the problem again.

    JZ I’m last 2 games

    IP 8.1
    H 19
    ER 10
    R 10
    BB 3
    K 6
    ERA 10.81
    WHIP 2.64

Tell me how the bull pen and fielders are the problem. In those two games the Starter was the problem.

So was the Scherzer start (to a lesser degree), so was the Roark start.

The Ross start better than the above 4.

    Gio’s start was fine.

To many people pointing blame on the relieverswhen the starters have been very poor during this stretch.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:59 PM

In both JZim games the defense let him down and if you throw in the Red Sox game with the 2 catchable flyballs you see a pattern. JZim doesn’t need his best stuff to pitch well but he needs his defense. I don’t see anyone laying out for balls. It’s like ho hum, no biggie.

      • manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:02 PM

Our fielding positioning is not good.

No excuse though 19 hits in that little time is not all fielding.

    • Mrsb loves the Nats - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:04 PM

Here is the thing… the starting rotation, outside of Scherzer, has been less than advertised… they haven’t been as outstanding but that doesn’t take anything away from the fact that the BP is shambles…

The Stammen injury hurts… the SS injury hurts… Gio not pitching deep hurts…

It’s just a collective amount of inconsistency. I would rather they still work out all these issues and get to rolling when July/August get to rolling…

      • manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:12 PM

They will solve it but the starters have been much more disappointing than the relievers.

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:14 PM

Not true they have left plenty of games with leads… but the BP has lost it….

Cant recall too many games where the SP blew up and the BP didn’t add gas on the fire…

It’s not an either/or for me… its both.

  84. Theophilus T.S. - Jun 12, 2015 at 9:55 PM

“Poor location” is the phrase used by people who don’t want to say, “lousy pitching.” WTH do you think lousy pitching is? Throwing the ball where mediocre and less players hit the stuffing out of it! Nats’ best pitchers now are Scherzer, who has lost his last two starts, and Storen, who can’t get into the game because the Nats never have the lead. Well, they can always look to the 1914 Boston Braves for inspiration.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:04 PM

There are 2 kinds of lousy pitching. One poor location 2 poor pitch selection.

      We specialize in poor location.

  91. Joe Seamhead - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:15 PM

    Who’s on first?

  92. manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:18 PM

I say our positioning scouts have Harper just little off on a fly to right center. The similar fly by Espi their left fielder a little pull position and he catches it on the run.

    The little things.

  93. natsdial8 - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:22 PM

Not only have to be frustrated wih our Nats. I can’t find half my posts on this crazy blog AND we have to listen to Johnny Holliday ? WTH is that all about . Absolutely terrible play by play guy.

  94. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:23 PM

There’s your groundball and it finds a hole. Unreal.

  95. rlndtln - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:24 PM

Guys to post you must hit the reply button of the last post.

  96. stoatva - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:27 PM

Just when you think Desmond couldn’t take an uglier swing…

  97. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:27 PM

Desi’s baseball IQ is just mind boggling. 2-2 pitch and you know he’s going to get him to chase and spike the ball. Sure enough, for K number 3!

    • Mrsb loves the Nats - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:30 PM

Why do you expect anything different… feast or famine batter…. he is refusing to feast….

      • manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:35 PM

        Needs a day off now.

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:37 PM

        He had 1 yesterday….

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:38 PM

Everyone knew what was coming. A pitch out of the strike zone.

  98. AlexandriaNatFan - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:28 PM

Based on what Kolko said: MAT should be giving Desi advice on hitting.

  99. manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:29 PM

We hit line drives and their positioning is so much better.

  100. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:30 PM

    Way to go TyMo!!!

    Let the come back begin….

  101. stoatva - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:30 PM

Someone had to hit the meaningless solo home run. I’m glad it was TMo.

    • Mrsb loves the Nats - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:40 PM

Nats going to score 4 next inning… 😆😆😆

      • stoatva - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:43 PM

We’re into their bullpen. That can’t hurt.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:57 PM

Had their chances. Hard to believe they pitched to Uggla with Desi on-deck.

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:58 PM

So I went to put clothes in the dryer.. cuz I figured that would happen….

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:59 PM

Bad strategy by them but it worked out. They had 1st base open.

    • Joe Seamhead - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:56 PM

I call that a Rafael Palmero home run.

  102. manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:33 PM

Word press sucks more than our pitchers.

two games 2 homes for 1b

  103. stoatva - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:37 PM

Thornton has lost a couple of mph from last year.

  104. manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:42 PM

Seattle fans want to demo King Felix who gave up 8 runs .1 innings tonight.

    Check out Mariners insider

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 11:01 PM

      1/3 of an inning actually.

      • manassasnatsfan - Jun 13, 2015 at 12:09 AM

.1 when talking innings pitched is 1/3. Maybe you didn’t see the point in front of the one.

      • scmargenau - Jun 13, 2015 at 12:41 AM

        .33

  105. senators69 - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:44 PM

Charlie & Dave on the radio broadcast saying Thornton’s fastball velocity way down from the high 90’s to the low 90’s. Fister throwing mid-80’s in rehab starts (assume that is to work up to faster speed?). Velocity such a huge indicator for pitchers, it’s got me concerned.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 11:02 PM

Did you see Mark Buehrle. I like velo but give me location and movement.

      • scmargenau - Jun 13, 2015 at 12:39 AM

See, 92-96 is norm. This hitters are better suited to hit those. Unless u pitch high 90s it doesn’t matter. Too add to ghost, location, movement and SPEED VARIATION

  106. stoatva - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:51 PM

    Wheeeee!!!

  107. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:51 PM

Keep scoring…. lets keep the 2 out magic going…

  108. stoatva - Jun 12, 2015 at 10:52 PM

Wonder if this Knebel is any relation to the Seven Days in May author.

  109. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 11:00 PM

David Carpenter with a Low Lev appearance. Let’s see it.

  110. manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 11:02 PM

David Carpenter good start. Hope this is the norm.

  111. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jun 12, 2015 at 11:03 PM

So…. 4 runs this inning right!?!?!!!!

  112. Danny - Jun 12, 2015 at 11:08 PM

    Call Turner up 😉

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 11:44 PM

Trade Desi to Reds in the Chapman deal.

    • scmargenau - Jun 13, 2015 at 12:36 AM

Why not? Or yuni to ss espi 2nd till he regresses to norm, tendon 3rd. Dilfo and trea as back ups = solid infield. Moore n zim are fine at first.

    • scmargenau - Jun 13, 2015 at 12:36 AM

Why not? Or yuni to ss espi 2nd till he regresses to norm, tendon 3rd. Dilfo and trea as back ups = solid infield. Moore n zim are fine at first.

  113. manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 11:08 PM

Maybe if we would hypnotize Desi so he would quit swinging for 5 run homers every at bat.

    Worth a try.

  114. Joe Seamhead - Jun 12, 2015 at 11:12 PM

11 K’s, 4 by Desmond, whose poor defensive play in the first set the tone for this game.

  115. Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 11:13 PM

Hand out mirrors because some of these guys have to look at themselves in the mirror and it starts with Desmond. 1 awful defensive blunder and 0-4 with 4 K’s. Taylor with an 0-fer and just very nonchalant playing in LF and booted a ball that luckily didn’t cause an advance. Span 0-3. JZim with a poor start although his defense didn’t help him.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 11:15 PM

I mentioned the mirror 3 nights ago.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Jun 12, 2015 at 11:18 PM

LOL, good one! I love Bryce. Max effort. To watch Michael A. Taylor playing balls on 1 bounce as if the bases are empty just is part of what I’m seeing that concerns me.

  116. manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 11:13 PM

Last 3 games we are now scoring, but starters and to some degree the bullpen have not executed.

  117. Danny - Jun 12, 2015 at 11:14 PM

The bad news is we srink currently. The good news is the division is terrible, hopefully we can beat up on it when we get back into division play.

    • Danny - Jun 12, 2015 at 11:14 PM

      Stink!*

  118. Mrsb loves the Nats - Jun 12, 2015 at 11:14 PM

    Terrible….. all…. around…

  119. stoatva - Jun 12, 2015 at 11:15 PM

Anyway, after 61 games we are a game worse than last year and a game better than 2013, so let’s all panic.

Sure isn’t very entertaining to watch, though.

    • wmlsays - Jun 13, 2015 at 1:50 AM

The Nats are still not the Cards, nor the Giants. A good team, perhaps, but a champion they are not. And the way they are going, with their flaws and injuries, they are once again likely also runs. But hey, they did win the division last year. And three years ago. Of course, the Cards and the Giants have won WS titles since then, while the talented Nats wallow in the dust. Still, the season is early, and they will probably be the champs at the end. That is the hope, the dream, and seemingly, the flight of fancy. They are a good team, but nowhere near the best.

      • David Proctor - Jun 13, 2015 at 2:08 AM

How predictive is regular season success of postseason success? Surely nobody believes the Giants or Royals were powerhouses in the regular season last year. They each won 88 games and barely squeaked into the playoffs. And presumably if those teams barely got in, they had times where they did not look like playoff teams. Times where they couldn’t hit, couldn’t field, and/or couldn’t pitch. Most teams go through that, only powerhouses don’t.

This team may not be the powerhouse or the juggernaut we were led to believe. This team won’t win 110 games. But then again, we’ve tried the whole “best record in the league” thing and it didn’t work out. Maybe having to fight for it a little more will have a different result.

  120. manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 11:21 PM

I will repeat I believe Desi needs a good hypnotist

  121. Toot D. Blan - Jun 12, 2015 at 11:22 PM

Nats now 0-5 with Johnny Holliday or Ray Knight in the booth. All five losses to inferior teams. Just sayin.

    • manassasnatsfan - Jun 12, 2015 at 11:48 PM

      We look at everything.

  122. Drew - Jun 13, 2015 at 4:21 AM

    On the bright side:

24 to reach 100 homers at age 22.

    679 from Henry Aaron.
