POSTPONED: Game 51: Blue Jays at Nats

Jun 1, 2015, 3:21 PM EST

Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER

The Nationals return home on Monday looking to get past an ugly weekend sweep at the Cincinnati Reds. Up next for them is a seven-game homestand, beginning with three against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Jordan Zimmermann (4-2, 3.26) will make his 11th start of the season and just his second ever appearance against the Blue Jays. Zimmermann saw Toronto back in 2009 as a rookie and gave up one run in 5 2/3 innings in a then-rare Nats win.

Starting for Toronto is former Cy Young-winner R.A. Dickey (2-5, 5.77). A former Mets pitcher, Dickey has seen the Nationals plenty over the years. He has a 3.73 ERA in 15 games against the Nats.

We’ll have you covered tonight from Nats Park, if they can get the game in, that is. The weather forecast calls for rain and thunderstorms all evening and through the night into Tuesday morning…

  1. unterp - Jun 1, 2015 at 3:22 PM

    let’s go Nats…

  2. Eugene in Oregon - Jun 1, 2015 at 3:24 PM

    GYFNG! (if there’s game)

    • sjberke - Jun 1, 2015 at 3:30 PM

This is the only Nats-Jays series. While they could do a doubleheader tomorrow or Wednesday, more likely they’ll get this game in if it takes going past midnight.

      • Eugene in Oregon - Jun 1, 2015 at 3:43 PM

Understood, but folks on the previous threads seem to be saying you’ll need an ark.

      • masterfishkeeper - Jun 1, 2015 at 3:45 PM

Well, remember that Toronto gets to visit Baltimore, probably two more times this year. So they could stop off in the nicer city in the area either before or after one of those series, if both teams (Blue Jays and Nats) have an off day.

      • Doc - Jun 1, 2015 at 4:06 PM

If they have to get on the ark Eugene, I hope Noah takes two ballplayers (one female, one male).

  3. natsjackinfl - Jun 1, 2015 at 3:47 PM

So nobody cares that D-Span isn’t in the lineup?

    • masterfishkeeper - Jun 1, 2015 at 3:47 PM

I owe you a virtual beer.

  4. masterfishkeeper - Jun 1, 2015 at 3:47 PM

Not good that Denard is out of the lineup. We’re back to missing our top third of our lineup again. Probably a good day to have rain.

    • natsjackinfl - Jun 1, 2015 at 3:49 PM

I beat you by a millisecond but really, with a balky knee and probable wet conditions, not a bad way to go.

      • Joe Seamhead - Jun 1, 2015 at 4:13 PM

He slipped on the wet grass last week. I think it was in Chicago. I mentioned on the game blog that was how i tore my knee up years ago. I think that this is as good of a time as any to rest him. I’m confident that he could be used as a pinch hitter if needed.

      • Eric - Jun 1, 2015 at 4:17 PM

I commented on that, too, Joe, but had forgotten about it. Hopefully a day’s rest + leaving a couple innings early yesterday is all it takes.

    • nats128 - Jun 1, 2015 at 3:56 PM

It had to been barking yesterday. This team just can’t do anything easy

      • Sec 3, My Sofa - Jun 1, 2015 at 5:21 PM

It’s supposed to be hard! If it wasn’t hard, everybody’d do it. The hard is what makes it great.

  5. nattygoats - Jun 1, 2015 at 3:56 PM

Ty Zimm needs to start hitting the dang ball

  6. nattygoats - Jun 1, 2015 at 3:56 PM

    Ryan

  7. Sec 3, My Sofa - Jun 1, 2015 at 4:16 PM

Here it comes. Pouring hard in Shaw.

    • Eric - Jun 1, 2015 at 4:18 PM

Yeah, College Park just got slammed.

  8. Joe Seamhead - Jun 1, 2015 at 4:28 PM

We decided not to go through the frustration. A rainout would be fine by me, but whatever…

  9. Steady Eddie - Jun 1, 2015 at 4:34 PM

10 minutes of biblical stuff downtown, followed by thunder and then sunshine.

    • Eric - Jun 1, 2015 at 4:38 PM

      Sunshine returning to CP, too.

    • Steady Eddie - Jun 1, 2015 at 4:39 PM

But plenty of threatening blobs on the radar coming up from SW Virginia. Joe, you’re probably wise to stay home. I suspect a day night separate doubleheader is in the offing for tomorrow.

  10. golfersal - Jun 1, 2015 at 5:00 PM

This is the problem with having season tickets, you have to endure bad weather days like this that you have to just say, hey it’s better to waste the $130 for the two seats than to drive from Leesburg and then have to endure a long rain delay and sent home.

Even on Stubhub nobody is buying tickets.

    • Sec 3, My Sofa - Jun 1, 2015 at 5:13 PM

So there should be some good deals if you can take the raincheck for tomorrow or Wednesday?

      • golfersal - Jun 1, 2015 at 6:25 PM

yes, not to complain just means I will spend 8 hours at the park instead of four.
Doesn’t matter anytime I can spend time at a ballpark instead of my desk is a good day.

  11. jd - Jun 1, 2015 at 5:08 PM

I wouldn’t worry about Span too much. Like Zim when you hit the 30 mark you are gonna get aches and pains and it’s not a terrible idea to sit down for a day or 2 once in a while particularly when the weather is what it is.

    • NIWatcher - Jun 1, 2015 at 5:17 PM

Then, on the other hand, I believe we have had too much experience to ignore that our training staff is not always the most accurate in immediate evaluation of more serious injuries.

      • jd - Jun 1, 2015 at 5:49 PM

I think that’s pretty much chat room nonsense. I happen to live in the NY area where both training staffs are held in the same regard as ours.

  12. Joe Seamhead - Jun 1, 2015 at 5:17 PM

Well, Span’s barking knee probably explains why he didn’t steal on Lester the other night.

  13. Sec 3, My Sofa - Jun 1, 2015 at 5:17 PM

It’s going to be stop and go all night, from the looks of it on radar.

    • rlndtln - Jun 1, 2015 at 5:19 PM

I figured out how we can win it all.Scherzer and Jzim and 2 days of rain.

      • jfmii - Jun 1, 2015 at 6:51 PM

Spahn, Burdette, Sain, and pray for rain

  14. micksback1 - Jun 1, 2015 at 5:20 PM

    natsjack

I posted on the last blog on Grace being sent down’

I think MW must have read our posts this morning

    LOL

    • jd - Jun 1, 2015 at 5:24 PM

      mick,

I,m glad your happy. On the other hand I’m fairly certain they didn’t replace Grace with Kershaw so it may be just shuffling the chairs on the Titanic.

      • rlndtln - Jun 1, 2015 at 5:27 PM

        exactly
