Game 36: Nats at Padres

May 14, 2015, 6:40 PM EDT

USA Today Sports Images

After a thrilling, come-from-behind victory yesterday in Arizona, the Nationals now open a 4-game weekend series in San Diego, where the weather isn’t very San Diego-like. There’s a chance of rain tonight, a true rare event at Petco Park.

If and when they play, Doug Fister will be on the mound for the Nationals, facing a much-different and much-improved Padres lineup. Right-hander Tyson Ross (whose brother, Joe, was traded to the Nats in this winter’s Trea Turner deal) starts for San Diego.

I’m unfortunately not in town this weekend for the series, but please continue the discussion here and check back in the morning for some remote analysis…

I hope the game isn’t rained out. It would stifle the progress of Bryce.

    • infideljack - May 14, 2015 at 6:53 PM

I hope it isn’t rained out because I would an attack of baseball withdrawal.

    • Doc - May 14, 2015 at 8:50 PM

I hope that the game isn’t rained out, because it be another sign of climate change—rain where it never rains!!

  2. veejh - May 14, 2015 at 7:06 PM

Kemp, Norris, and Upton? Bizzaro world.

  3. Eugene in Oregon - May 14, 2015 at 7:09 PM

    Rain? San Diego? California?

    GYFNG!

    • veejh - May 14, 2015 at 7:12 PM

      It will evaporate in seconds

  4. Danny - May 14, 2015 at 7:21 PM

Don’t want to see Kimbrel at all.

    • veejh - May 14, 2015 at 7:22 PM

I do, planted in the bullpen.

  5. Danny - May 14, 2015 at 7:23 PM

0 runs allowed 6 Ks in 3 innings for Giolito in Potomac

      • Ghost of Steve M. - May 14, 2015 at 9:22 PM

11 Ks and unfortunately took the L in a 1-0 game.

  6. rlndtln - May 14, 2015 at 7:31 PM

Split 4 games and get home.

  7. Danny - May 14, 2015 at 7:40 PM

9 Ks in 4 innings for Giolito.

Shucks. I was hoping I might see Giolito up at Frederick on Saturday.

      Gazoing!

      Wow!

      I guess that deserves a . . .

Back to my DVR-watching, hoping-for-happy-game-results mode for West Coast games.

    Go, NATS!!

    Stay classy, San Diego!

  9. rlndtln - May 14, 2015 at 7:53 PM

Any news on Rendon and Jansen.

    • ArVAFan - May 14, 2015 at 8:01 PM

Last two manager’s reports on Charlie and Dave, Matt said that Rendon is doing non-baseball strengthening activities. Same process Yuni went through with the oblique strain in spring training. Didn’t give a date on “next step,’ just trying to get the oblique calmed down and keep his strength up overall.

My feeling is that if Rendon comes back after the same rehab process that Yuni went through, and we get the same results, we’ll be glad we were patient until, I’m guessing, mid-June, since Rendon will basically have to go through Spring Training all over again. But there’s a lot of baseball after that.

Janssen is well into the rehab games.

      • adcwonk - May 14, 2015 at 8:06 PM

If we get the same results as Esco, then, just wow!

      • ArVAFan - May 14, 2015 at 8:46 PM

OK, the baseball gods are laughing at me. Just after I posted that, James Wagner tweeted that Rendon is on his way to Viera to begin baseball activities, starting with light throwing and fielding drills.

      • Hiram Hover - May 14, 2015 at 9:00 PM

If the baseball gods want to continue to laugh at you and declare him ready to join the team, that’s ok by me.

    • natsfan1a - May 14, 2015 at 8:48 PM

From Dan Kolko, by way of Mark’s tweeter update thingy:

      Dan Kolko @masnKolko

Anthony Rendon (oblique) went down to Viera today to begin baseball activities. Will start light throwing, fielding drills. Slow progression

      • natsfan1a - May 14, 2015 at 8:48 PM

Oh, I owe you a drink, ArVa.

  10. Section 222 - May 14, 2015 at 8:07 PM

Much improved is right. Kemp has been decent, Norris is hitting as well as any catcher in the NL (his OPS is 40 points higher than the Buffalo’s), and Justin “Don’t Mistake Me for BJ” Upton is always very dangerous. We’re lucky to miss Wil Myers. They’ve got some serious pitchers too, in Shields, Cashner and Tyson “My Brother Joe Might Be Better” Ross. Should be an interesting series.

How many innings of the next two games we’ll see live remains to be seen.

    • Eugene in Oregon - May 14, 2015 at 8:16 PM

Nats get to miss James Shields, right?

      • Section 222 - May 14, 2015 at 8:29 PM

Yes, he pitched last night. Looks like we’ll get Ross, Cashner, Kennedy and Despaigne.

      • Eugene in Oregon - May 14, 2015 at 9:20 PM

And I see that Wil Myers is out for at least a few days. To bad Melvin/BJ Upton is available to play CF.

    • masterfishkeeper - May 14, 2015 at 8:24 PM

Too bad Melvin is still on the DL. The Padres’ infield is kind of an odd group, like from the Island of Misfit Toys. Middlebrooks at 1B? I know they tried Meyers there, after he struggled in CF.

      • Eugene in Oregon - May 14, 2015 at 9:21 PM

Sorry; didn’t see this before posting a similar thought.

  11. manassasnatsfan - May 14, 2015 at 8:11 PM

Skipping San Diego? Players say that it is their favorite city to visit.

  12. manassasnatsfan - May 14, 2015 at 8:12 PM

A win tonight would put us with 20 wins the same as the Mets

  13. adcwonk - May 14, 2015 at 8:24 PM

I don’t know if anybody already mentioned this, but I don’t recall seeing it anywhere. (And, if so, I’ll happily owe them a beer).

It was kinda cool that, last night:

    1. DC basketball team went to the last shot with under 2 seconds left
    2. DC hockey team went to overtime in a game 7
    and
    3. DC baseball teams wins with grand-slam in the 9th

It’s cool that DC has three sports with play-off caliber teams. (And I’m also loving it that that fourth team is not being discussed at all these days)

OK, so, it’d be better if more than one out of three were won by DC, but, hey, at least the most important team won! 😉

    • natsfan1a - May 14, 2015 at 8:46 PM

I believe that the round kickball team won as well. 🙂

      • Sec 3, My Sofa - May 14, 2015 at 11:14 PM

I think they had an encore at the Washington Shakepeare Theater.

    • Doc - May 14, 2015 at 8:58 PM

My condolences to DC sports fans. I was hoping that the Caps would meet my Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup finals. We still owe you for stealing the Winter Classic!

      • veejh - May 14, 2015 at 10:04 PM

I was hoping we’d meet BB and the Ducks in the SC. That would have been cool. Another heartbreak. I’m used to it now.

  14. richardp6 - May 14, 2015 at 9:01 PM

I think we’ve been patient with Jason Werth long enough. You can’t keep him in the #3 position in the order any longer. Looking at tonights lineup, I think he should be moved to 6th till he starts hitting and move every one else up. What’s the logic for keeping a guy hitting under the Mendoza like batting 3rd? I guess you could say its because it hasn’t hurt them in scoring runs lately but its not optimal. I like Zimmerman after Harper so keep them from pitching around Harper too much and I applaud the move of Mr. clueless hitter Ian Desmond. to 7th. He needs to wise up and take a cue from Harper pitch selectivity. It would pay huge dividends for Desmond who I considered a very undisciplined hitter. He’s go 20/20 only because of his ridiculous talent.

    • adcwonk - May 14, 2015 at 9:27 PM

For what it’s werth (;-) ), Werth has hit .269 over his last seven games (with 2 HR and 5 walks) — getting on base in each game.

So, it seems he’s starting to work his way out of it.

      • manassasnatsfan - May 14, 2015 at 9:43 PM

Also winning 12 of 15 with basicallythis lineup. Why would you just change it?

    • snopes1 - May 15, 2015 at 12:11 AM

Surely you’ve heard of the concept of small sample size? It would make no sense to bench Werth based on a relative handful of at-bats right after coming back from an injury.

  15. rlndtln - May 14, 2015 at 9:29 PM

    harper 3rd,Zim 4th and Jason5th against righties.Against lefties Werth ,Harp,Zim.

  16. AlexandriaNatFan - May 14, 2015 at 9:37 PM

Ray and Johnny have lost their minds right now. Lol

    • manassasnatsfan - May 14, 2015 at 10:16 PM

Talking about the argument imitating Harper?

    • nataddicted - May 15, 2015 at 12:06 AM

      And how is this news?

  17. veejh - May 14, 2015 at 10:11 PM

    All right. Let’s go Nats!

  18. Ghost of Steve M. - May 14, 2015 at 10:15 PM

Should we tell FP that is not Bud Norris catching for the Padres.

  19. veejh - May 14, 2015 at 10:15 PM

I guess they’re not used to tracking storms in SD. Great job on that game start.

  20. Joe Seamhead - May 14, 2015 at 10:15 PM

Denard’s at bat should not count. It was pouring. Do over!

    • manassasnatsfan - May 14, 2015 at 10:22 PM

Raining so hard no one could see the ball.

  21. rlndtln - May 14, 2015 at 10:17 PM

    Morons

  22. veejh - May 14, 2015 at 10:18 PM

I remember being at a game during the inaugural season at RFK where our ground crew completely screwed up and could not get the tarp off because it was so covered in water. Maybe it was an issue getting it on?? Foggy, but funny as hell.

  23. Section 222 - May 14, 2015 at 10:21 PM

Bryce is really working that mouth guard in the dugout during the rain delay.

  24. Section 222 - May 14, 2015 at 10:21 PM

Bryce is really working that mouth guard in the dugout during the rain delay.

  25. veejh - May 14, 2015 at 10:25 PM

btw…..anyone know how many feet MATs GS was yesterday? I’m gonna say it was 442.

    • Doc - May 14, 2015 at 10:34 PM

I dunno, but I thought I saw somewhere that is was 407. In my Nats’ imagination it was a couple of thousand feet from home plate!!!

      • Sec 3, My Sofa - May 14, 2015 at 11:24 PM

It’s 407 to the wall at that point, and the yellow line is about 20 feet off the ground, The ball cleared that comfortably, maybe five or six feet. So I can believe 445 with no problem.

    • Steady Eddie - May 14, 2015 at 11:00 PM

AtBat’s statcast feed said 446 feet.

  26. TheBigDummy - May 14, 2015 at 10:45 PM

    Rain, rain go away..

Unless it’s a real serious storm, odds are they won’t call this game right? It’s already a late start over on our side, I can’t imagine that’s an issue.

    • thisizit - May 14, 2015 at 11:09 PM

They really need the rain out there, notwithstanding the impact on baseball!

  27. Mrsb loves the Nats - May 14, 2015 at 10:50 PM

Any idea when this game will resume? I may have to record it and watch it tomorrow if it doesn’t start soon.

    • thenatom - May 14, 2015 at 11:45 PM

      12:10

  28. dcwx61 - May 14, 2015 at 10:57 PM

maybe it will start at 1 am and go into extra innings and the game will end at sunrise

    • Eugene in Oregon - May 14, 2015 at 11:46 PM

      Love that image.

  29. conatsguy - May 14, 2015 at 11:06 PM

Switched to the Rockies/Dodgers game. It’s raining there too! Rockies announcers can’t remember if it’s ever rained in LA during a rockies game. Kinda sounded like FP and Carp a 1/2 hr ago. Still playing though…

    • thisizit - May 14, 2015 at 11:08 PM

Since they have a drought out west, the rain has got to be welcome.

      • Sec 3, My Sofa - May 14, 2015 at 11:25 PM

More than a drought, and more than welcome. They are desperate.

    • Eugene in Oregon - May 14, 2015 at 11:48 PM

I had the XM radio on for the first (and only) AB and the San Diego announcers said that there had been one rain out at Petco Park. I think they were being serious.

  30. nataddicted - May 14, 2015 at 11:48 PM

    @nationals

    And we have a re-start time! Tonight’s #Nats – #Padres game will resume at 9:10 p.m. PT (12:10 a.m. ET)… so REALLY #LateNightNats!

  31. conatsguy - May 14, 2015 at 11:59 PM

And the tarp comes out at Doger stadium in the 6th. Last rainout there was 2000

  32. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 12:12 AM

    Notice Carp said Derek Norris

    • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 12:32 AM

Yes, after 2 hours he corrected himself.

  33. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 12:13 AM

The two batters after the return, sure looked rusty.

  34. NatsLady - May 15, 2015 at 12:14 AM

I woke up and Wilpon and Kornheiser are on my TV. What’s with that?????????? Rain delay? In San Diego???

OK, I see Doug Fister. Much better.

  35. veejh - May 15, 2015 at 12:17 AM

    Testing 1, 2. Testing….

    Anyone else awake?

  36. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 12:17 AM

Fister opened first 3 guys with a ball, then all hit the second pitch.

Fourth hitter starts with a strike and then a pitch up knocked hard

Fister please keep the ball down.

  37. veejh - May 15, 2015 at 12:18 AM

    Damn, Fister. Come on.

  38. Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 12:18 AM

Derrek Norris does it to the Nats again.

  39. veejh - May 15, 2015 at 12:19 AM

Didn’t Norris pound Fister in his debut last season in Oakland?

    • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 12:21 AM

I thought he pounded Gio, but maybe it was Fister.

    • Danny - May 15, 2015 at 12:23 AM

He hit 2 home runs off Fister for his debut last year. Make it 3.

      • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 12:31 AM

That is nit true. I already said it was Gio.

  40. veejh - May 15, 2015 at 12:19 AM

Didn’t Norris pound Fister in his debut last season in Oakland?

    • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 12:27 AM

Carp just answered your question which corrected what they said earlier.

      • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 12:32 AM

He answered wrong, I told FP to have him check his damn book as I knew it was off Gio.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 12:35 AM

Right, he said it was Fister the first time and then corrected himself.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 12:41 AM

What they didn’t correct is that they were both 3 run HRs off of Gio not Grand Slams.

  41. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 12:19 AM

They all hit the second pitch. Everyone them was up.

We talk about Strasburgs mechanics, Fister’s has been up all season.

McCatty needs to straighten this up.

  42. nataddicted - May 15, 2015 at 12:20 AM

    C’mon Doug Fister. GYFNG!

One out on a fly to Harp in the bottom of the second.

Two out, RZim to Fister covering to get Venable.

Kemp singles to kill the nono.

Upton singles to put two men on…

And Norris goes deep for a three run dinger. Pads 3 Nats 0

    • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 12:22 AM

      Thank you DSpan!

      • nataddicted - May 15, 2015 at 12:25 AM

My goodness he’s a very nice Center Fielder to watch. Never makes a bad step!

  43. Danny - May 15, 2015 at 12:23 AM

    Starters continue to get pounded.

    • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 12:25 AM

As bad as our fielding has been the starters really have gone south , but we have won anyway.

  44. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 12:24 AM

The pitches are as poorly located with terrible movement just like Strasburg the other night.

So McCatty has at least two pitcher’s mechanics to work with.

We are suppose to have the greatest starting staff ever assemble. Only one has really carried the weight.

But our hitters lately been bailing the starters out.

  45. Danny - May 15, 2015 at 12:26 AM

Nvm the Norris slams were off Gio.

    • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 12:28 AM

I said that 10 minutes ago. I clearly remember fussing at Gio.

Was a no brainer to me.

  46. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 12:27 AM

I knew I wasn’t crazy. I clearly remember Gio giving up the two grand slams. Carp certainly didn’t fool me. Some might have been fooled.

But I tweeted FP, and told him to have Carp check, and it was unfair to blamrpe Fister.

  47. Danny - May 15, 2015 at 12:28 AM

Apparently we have never seen a plus slider before. Ross making us look foolish early. Staying up may be a challenge.

    • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 12:29 AM

We always have trouble with sliders early. Sometime we hit it second time some times nit.

  48. nataddicted - May 15, 2015 at 12:29 AM

Ryan Zimmerman has to have broken the most of his bats for this team so far this season!

    • nataddicted - May 15, 2015 at 12:31 AM

Edit: Ryan has broken a lot of his bats!

  49. nataddicted - May 15, 2015 at 12:33 AM

Oh damn, I love that play. So many runners are in the way of that throw. Just hit ’em! OUT!

  50. Danny - May 15, 2015 at 12:33 AM

Ump whiffed on strike 3. Pads homer again. Fister has these kind of games…

    • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 12:34 AM

      He sure did. Thanks Blue.

    • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 12:35 AM

I call that a Gio, he screws up a lot after umos squeezes him.

    • nataddicted - May 15, 2015 at 12:35 AM

+1 Pitchtrack had that as a strikeout!

      • nataddicted - May 15, 2015 at 12:41 AM

        Umpire Tony Randazzo – #11

His call is hosing us! Many extra runs!

  51. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 12:34 AM

Fister what is your problem. You pulled a Gio, you don’t get a K, so the next pitch you give up a honer.

  52. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 12:36 AM

Did Fister warm up before the rain delay I wonder.

    Something is totally wrong.

  53. Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 12:36 AM

Inning should be over and 3-0

    • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 12:49 AM

It was clearly a strike, but to often when we get squuezed the pitcher throws a meatball. That is unacceptable.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 12:51 AM

That wasn’t a meatball. Do you ever give the batter an ounce of credit?

      • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 12:59 AM

Right in his personal wheelhouse, I watch the Padres most night. He loves indpside low pitches, so it is a meatball to him.

  54. Danny - May 15, 2015 at 12:37 AM

Do we ever get J Upton out?

  55. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 12:37 AM

Fister must not woke up from his nap during the rain delay.

  56. Danny - May 15, 2015 at 12:38 AM

3rd straight awful start in a row. The pen is going to be on fumes this series.

    Start raining

  59. Danny - May 15, 2015 at 12:39 AM

If they come out of the bullpen unprepared that is McCatty’s fault.

Inc Catty didn’t bother to calm him down in the first inning.

But our starters are suppose to be our strength, but his past 10 days or so it really has become the weakness.

  62. Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 12:43 AM

    Good job Desi! TGTNH

    • nataddicted - May 15, 2015 at 12:46 AM

Eh? I need new batteries for my hearing aid? TGTNH? Huh?

      • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 12:50 AM

        There Goes The No Hitter.

      • nataddicted - May 15, 2015 at 12:52 AM

Yeah, how did I not know that?

  63. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 12:45 AM

As mad as I was at the Caps last night, I am madder at Fister for totally not being ready to pitch.

Ross was ready, he had the same damn rain.

  64. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 12:46 AM

He took it to right like he should

  65. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 12:48 AM

FP wants to know how Ross losses. Nit everyone swings at his sliders as they are tailing out of the zone.

    Discipline is the answer.

  66. Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 12:49 AM

    Wow, Fister pulled!

    • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 12:53 AM

Of all pitches almost nine were well located. Except the one called ball 1 that was strike 3. All other strikes mid to upper plate with no movement.

We gave 2/5 of our starters really pitching poor now, when expected 1 games a month that way.

What do you think their problem is.

It seems like they are not releasing the ball with movement.

  67. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 12:51 AM

    Why are wasting Trainan?

That’s right he is OK as we are already down 7-0

    • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 12:54 AM

Matt Williams wants to keep the Pads at 7 runs instead of 14.

      • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 12:56 AM

Unless you score 8, there is no difference.

  68. Danny - May 15, 2015 at 12:53 AM

Scherzer only Nats starter below a 4 ERA………

    • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 12:55 AM

When more than one is not ore forming, I always suspect the preparation for a start is the problem.

  69. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 12:57 AM

OK hitters you ready to start, or you going to roll over and play dead.

  70. nataddicted - May 15, 2015 at 12:58 AM

    Odrisamer Despaigne [ding] [ding]

  71. Danny - May 15, 2015 at 12:58 AM

Do we have to swing at EVERY slider out of the zone…

    • nataddicted - May 15, 2015 at 1:01 AM

      Puking now.

  72. Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 12:59 AM

I want to know how Tyson Ross looks so good after almost 2 hours he had after his 1st pitch to get to his 2nd batter faced.

By the way, Tyson’s brother Joe is with the Nats.

    • Danny - May 15, 2015 at 1:00 AM

Because the Nats have collectively never seen a slider before.

    • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:01 AM

Because his out pitch us never a strike. Take his sliders they rarely end up in the strike zone. We are showing absolutely no patience at the plate.

    • dcwx61 - May 15, 2015 at 9:06 AM

      could it be biorhythms.
The started at 12:30 AM Nats time but 9:30 or so in the Ross zone 😉

  73. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:03 AM

    Finally someone didn’t swing.

The pitches to everyone else was nit much different, but they swung.

    • nataddicted - May 15, 2015 at 1:06 AM

But was I the only one that noticed Bryce showing up an ump again? Dropped his gear (bat, foot guard) at home plate not at first. I don’t think so.

      • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:08 AM

Every walk this season he has done the same thing, so it looked normal to me.

      • nataddicted - May 15, 2015 at 1:21 AM

Okay, I guess I’m just stupid again.

  74. Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 1:04 AM

Bryce Harper hustling like its a tie game.

  75. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:04 AM

That slide a little bit higher. If it is up a little swing, if not let it go.

    Not rocket science.

  76. Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 1:05 AM

RISP hitting by Ramos. 16 game hitting streak and TGTSO

  77. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:05 AM

    Desi move the line.

  78. Danny - May 15, 2015 at 1:05 AM

On the board. Haha why even throw a fastball to Ramos there

    • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:12 AM

      He jammed him with it.

  79. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:07 AM

    Lay off all low sliders

  80. Danny - May 15, 2015 at 1:10 AM

May as well chase some more.. But go ahead and take the outer half fastball.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 1:12 AM

You were saying? Went oppo with the outer half fastball.

      • Danny - May 15, 2015 at 1:14 AM

        In the first AB yes

  81. veejh - May 15, 2015 at 1:10 AM

    Present….still.

  82. Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 1:10 AM

Ramos is now batting .400 with RISP. I thought last week’s .385 was nuts.

    • veejh - May 15, 2015 at 1:12 AM

He can do better. So can Dez.

      • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:17 AM

Ramos is not anywhere near our problem.

Desi is way too impatient (but always has been).

despite winning 12 of 15 the starters have been bitter disappointments except the 2 1-0 wins over the Mets.

  83. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:11 AM

There he hung a slider and Desi fouled it.

Then swine at a ball pulling it the number one mistake a low outside slider.

I just don’t understand, Tony Gwynn taught the correct way to hit slider ( go with the pitch) and people refuse to do it regularly.

  84. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:12 AM

We could have used that Tater, that you fouled straight back.

  85. veejh - May 15, 2015 at 1:13 AM

Hmmmmmm…..maybe I should go back to bed

  86. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:14 AM

Trainan gives it back faster than we can score our own.

    Where is Robinson?

  87. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:15 AM

Question, when Janssen comes back, who goes?

    • Danny - May 15, 2015 at 1:16 AM

      Solis/Grace

      • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:21 AM

It will be one of the two, but Treinan makes me much mire angry, as he great stuff, but still gives up way too many hits and runs.

        Something is wrong.

Again a lot of things are wrong. With pitchers. If McCarty cannot fixed the mechanics then find someone who can.

  88. veejh - May 15, 2015 at 1:18 AM

Treinen will eventually put it all together and be a stud. Book that.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 1:22 AM

Definitely. His stuff is electric. Even the HR to Spangenberg wasn’t a bad pitch.

      • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:28 AM

His stuff is better than his results. To many games he gives up runs. Very bad habit for a reliever.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 1:34 AM

        Well no sh!t Sherlock.

  89. Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 1:21 AM

    Good bunt Treinen

  90. veejh - May 15, 2015 at 1:21 AM

    Spring monsoon! SoCal loving it!

  91. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:22 AM

We are still swinging at crappy low sliders. Span got lucky with his.

  92. Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 1:23 AM

3rd time around the order. Let’s see how the Nats adjust.

    • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:33 AM

Span hit a low slider in the dirt, Escobar swings at a 3-1 I would let go. Werth at least takes one to right field.

If we would have laid off slider we would be a lot better off, He is second in the league in walks for a reason.

  93. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:24 AM

Let’s score enough to stall the weather

  94. veejh - May 15, 2015 at 1:24 AM

    1st steal of the year?

    • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:27 AM

Had one yesterday in a double steal with Harper , yesterday’s was his second.

  95. veejh - May 15, 2015 at 1:28 AM

Game over. Game will be called shortly. We’ll get em tomorrow. Fister must be becoming mental. Stras must be rubbing off on him.

    • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:30 AM

So it seems. Our starters have laid a lot of eggs recently.

As great as they were I expected one a month at maximum.

  96. veejh - May 15, 2015 at 1:31 AM

I’d like to see a 4 seam occasionally from Treinen.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 1:34 AM

It’s too straight. His track record on it is not good. That’s the pitch he has to work on and I’ve suggested the 4 seamer is the one he needs to throw for the high heater.

      • veejh - May 15, 2015 at 1:35 AM

With all those other moving pitches, you’d figure a laser beam would become effective.

  97. Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 1:32 AM

This ump needs to wipe the rain off of his glasses. Treinen struck out Norris on that 2-2 pitch.

  98. veejh - May 15, 2015 at 1:34 AM

Are they stretching Treinen out to be part of the rotation? Stras trade in the making?

    • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:36 AM

He is now the long man.

Don’t tell me you want us to waste another pitcher.

      • veejh - May 15, 2015 at 1:38 AM

        I kid, I kid.

  99. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:35 AM

Treinan has pitched better tonight, but again in low leverage situation.

With our starters really taking annual leave, maybe this is Treinen’s role.

    • veejh - May 15, 2015 at 1:36 AM

      Survey Says!

      xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  100. Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 1:38 AM

Time for the Nats offense to put up a big crooked number on Ross.

    • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:40 AM

      How about a sniwman

      • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 1:43 AM

A snowman? If that happens, I will pour oatmeal on my floor and make a snow angel!

      • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:46 AM

I am with you. My damn fingers keep missing the right keys, getting late.

  101. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:41 AM

Move the line, and score 8

  102. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:42 AM

    Keep katpying off the slider

    • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:43 AM

      Damn fingers

  103. veejh - May 15, 2015 at 1:45 AM

    Vamos Ramos

  104. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:45 AM

Whoever the advance scout is for the Nats have nit seen Ross, this is the 5th I have seen, teams bear him by not swinging at the slider.

    Nit rocket science.

Why are we finally laying off.

    This was just terrible scouting.

  105. Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 1:46 AM

I love that camera shot of the reliever coming in then they zoom in on Ramos with Schu going over strategy.

    • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:47 AM

      Theyer will try fastball us.

He is either on or off. His breaking ball nit good

    • veejh - May 15, 2015 at 1:48 AM

scouting reports galore these days. right at everyone’s fingertips.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 1:50 AM

Yep, and you either follow it like Ramos did or ignore it like Desi did.

  106. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:48 AM

Harper would have been on second anyway.

  107. veejh - May 15, 2015 at 1:49 AM

As soon as we put up 8 runs in 1 inning, Ghost, will you be required to do an oatmeal snow angel.

  108. veejh - May 15, 2015 at 1:49 AM

As soon as we put up 8 runs in 1 inning, Ghost, will you be required to do an oatmeal snow angel.

  109. Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 1:49 AM

That’s a productive out going oppo and moving Bryce to 3rd with 1 out. I actually thought Ramos hit that harder but still made Kemp go back on it.

  110. Danny - May 15, 2015 at 1:50 AM

    Dez with another masterpiece

  111. veejh - May 15, 2015 at 1:50 AM

    Used to love you, Dez.

  112. veejh - May 15, 2015 at 1:50 AM

    Used to love you, Dez.

  113. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:50 AM

    Desi is just pathetic.

He gas no plan. Two pitches nit close to zone swings wildly. Schu please kick his ass.

The third was close enough to swing, he just takes.

What kind of plan is that.

  114. veejh - May 15, 2015 at 1:51 AM

Damn, a 3 run HR from Espi would be awesome right now

    • Danny - May 15, 2015 at 1:52 AM

To be fair that was the highest fastball I’ve ever seen him make contact with.

  115. Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 1:52 AM

1st 2 men on base and then 3rd and 1st with 1 out and Desi can’t make contact. 3 pitch K. smh

    • Danny - May 15, 2015 at 1:53 AM

The fact id rather have Espy up in run scoring situations than him at this point speaks volumes.

      • veejh - May 15, 2015 at 1:54 AM

        Right?! Crazy times in Natstown.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 1:58 AM

Danny’s RISP BA keeps dropping. Has to be near .050 He did make contact so there is that.

  116. veejh - May 15, 2015 at 1:55 AM

They are stretching Treinen out. LOL

    • Danny - May 15, 2015 at 1:56 AM

Need it. Bullpen has been worked hard

  117. Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 1:56 AM

    Quackenbush in next.

  118. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:56 AM

    Here is my oroble,m.

In our profession all get reports to study.

Tonight us a clear example basically 3 people studied scouting reports.

There is so much info you can get by studying.

I couldn’t okay baseball as my eye sight is bad, I will probably be blind within the next 5 years, However and watched at least 20 games a week, so I scout the west coast teams all the time.

Why do these elite athletes with great eyes, nit use the reports to become superstars. It seems to me they would want to be superstars.

Ability is great, but studying the other pitcher’s tendancy, and acting upon it, would make you so much greater.

  119. veejh - May 15, 2015 at 1:57 AM

    Excellent final inning from Treinen.

  120. veejh - May 15, 2015 at 1:57 AM

    Excellent final inning from Treinen.

  121. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:57 AM

I have Treinen’s case all year, but tonight he did excellently, too bad he had to follow someone totally not prepared to pitch.

  122. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:59 AM

Let’s tie it now boys. It is getting late, we stayed up til 2 not to watch a loss.

  123. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 1:59 AM

    Quackenbush, same report as Theyer

  124. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:01 AM

Swing at middle cut fastballs only, he will pitch enough of those

  125. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:02 AM

By the way I am crushing tonight on Draft King’s

  126. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:03 AM

Don’t swing at the breaking balls, they are rarely strikes.

  127. Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 2:05 AM

Clint Robinson once again misses the pitch to drive and fouls it straight back then makes weak contact to roll over a grounder to 2nd. He is the bench guy who has to step it up. While I appreciate the excitement of his relief appearance, he was put on the roster to smash righty relievers and that has not happened.

    • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:08 AM

Do you think TG Jr would be any better?

      • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 2:11 AM

Based on the last time I checked in on TGJr in Syracuse, nope.

I think it’s not a pressing issue right now but this big lefty bench bat situation continues to be a problem since forever with the Nats.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 2:13 AM

        .216/.273/.306/.579 in Syracuse

      • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:15 AM

It seems low priority now too.

The starters since thec1-0 games are a ness, who would gave ever thought that, Something is wrong and McCatty is nit fixing the mechanics. These pitchers can be great and are terrible right now fix it.

  128. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:06 AM

Norris was my catcher, Spangenburg my 3b, cabrearra 1b, and Altuva my 2b. All of them monster nights, Harper has been OK, but not like those guys

  129. Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 2:09 AM

Correction, Espi batting .056 in RISP this season. 1-18 If he can get a RISP hit here in his next 2 ABs, he gets that to .100. While Espi is hitting great in all other situations, he has to improve in RISP.

    • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:12 AM

In general he is outhitting SpDesi. Desi’s approach is getting every season.

He is uncoachable. I can clearly see what would fix him. I am Schu sees it, but can’t teach him. Which is shameful

      • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 2:14 AM

Combine not having a great approach with not seeing the ball well and pulling his head off of the ball for starters.

      • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:16 AM

I bet he doesn’t listen to Schu either.

  130. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:09 AM

I am headed for bed after top of 8th unless we score a snowman.

Though I want to hear MW excuse making. It is usually a pathetic excuse making attempt.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 2:15 AM

The excuse is Fister. Just a lousy start.

      • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:20 AM

Making three consecutive squad terrible starts. Needs a follow up question.

  131. Danny - May 15, 2015 at 2:15 AM

The only real positives from this game are Harper walks and Treinen saving the pen.

    • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:17 AM

      Buffalo 16 game hitting streak.

  132. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:18 AM

    Snowman coneth please.

  133. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:19 AM

That is swinging at a fastball.

  134. Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 2:20 AM

This is where I would insert Taylor for Werth to pinch-run and get an inning.

    • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:21 AM

      Good call.

If Zim would get hit Harper on base a lot, but Zim not taking as much as advantage as he could

      • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 2:33 AM

FP mentioned twice that Werth not running well but I see it, FP shows it and MW ignores it.

  135. Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 2:21 AM

When does Kimbrel get up 😉

    • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 2:22 AM

Ha, just heard Carp just say it.

    • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:23 AM

      Soon.

  136. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:24 AM

I would like to see Harper get up again in the 8th

  137. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:25 AM

    Keep the line moving.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 2:27 AM

Pitch #8 to RZim was ball 4

      • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:28 AM

It was, I was forgive him if he got a hit.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 2:34 AM

He was in swing mode on 3-2 but Nats needed base runners there.

  138. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:27 AM

Damn just missed it, can’t afford productive out now, we need hits or walks only until we tie it.

I hope we learn from this game. This pitching staff pitches a lit of balls. They win games when their opponents swing at balls. If their opponents don’t swing at balls and inky strikes they lose.

This is about thev20th Padre game I have watched, and they are consistent, they don’t pitch a lit of strikes.

  140. Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 2:31 AM

Ramos a hair late on that swing. That had oppo HR distance but a long Sac Fly. That’s 2 RBIs for Ramos tonight.

  141. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:33 AM

This is a big at bat for Espi. Don’t screw it up.

  142. Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 2:35 AM

Espinosa gets up with another RISP spot. Here’s his time.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 2:37 AM

Yeesh, a strikeout. Now at .053 in RISP 1-19 Nats aren’t able to capitalize on the error.

      • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:38 AM

        He didn’t read my report

    • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:37 AM

He didn’t read my report, no low slider. I prefer k looking a low slider then swinger at one. Why because none are strikes

  143. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:36 AM

The liner on foul 2 needed to be hit fair for another run.

Then he swings at a slider, the damn report should say no low slider.

  144. Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 2:39 AM

The Rockies just put a 3 spot on the Dodgers in the 9th to take a 5-4 lead.

  145. David Proctor - May 15, 2015 at 2:39 AM

Fister gave them no chance today. The guys put up good ABs throughout the whole game. Kept playing hard. That’s all you can ask.

  146. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:39 AM

    Grace is a dancer.

  147. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:41 AM

Take your damn time and get one trying to get two there was idiotic.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 2:42 AM

Agreed. Had the time to get the lead runner no doubt.

    • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:42 AM

Had he just got the lead running the inning would be over,

      • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 2:47 AM

Axford K’s Van Slyke with a man on 1st for the save. Dodgers lost in a row.

  148. Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 2:41 AM

That’s twice this season that Espinosa has failed to get that glove toss to Desi.

    • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:43 AM

Then reach in and get the lead runner.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 2:48 AM

Yes, if this was a close game we could be pi$$ed.

  149. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:45 AM

We have bothered to stay up all night, might as well now score the snowman.

Mason Dan needs to ask, what the hell going on withe starters last three game 10 1/3 innings 19 earned run 20 total.

Totally unacceptable from this mighty staff.

  150. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:46 AM

The Padres pitch a majority balls, why are we swinging, this is non sensible.

  151. Mrsb loves the Nats - May 15, 2015 at 2:47 AM

I am legitimately worries about Jordan Z, SS and Fister. Very concerned about our SP rotation.

    • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:49 AM

There is some issue there for sure.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 2:50 AM

I think they will all be fine. JZim had the 1 bad start in Boston but has been good most other starts and he’s showed even without his best stuff he can get by.

      • scmargenau - May 15, 2015 at 3:31 AM

        Homer.

      • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 8:48 AM

His starts have been good but not great like most last season.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 8:53 AM

Even when he hasn’t been his best he’s kept the Nats in games and he was also victim to shoddy defense not ruled errors like the flyballs misplayed in Boston.

  152. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:48 AM

We have three hitters whose each at bat was planned well. Not swinging at balls. All other batters might have gotten a hut , but was really poorly planned.

    Thanks Harper, Zim and Ramis

    • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 2:51 AM

Werth taking advantage of the relievers.

      • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 8:51 AM

But he obviously didn’t get the word on Tyson Ross. It was 4th time I have seen him this year. He throws more balls than strikes, but the team acted like they didn’t know it.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 8:54 AM

        His 3 pitch K wasn’t a good one.

  153. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:50 AM

This is the first game all season that Escobar was totally undisciplined, he could walked all 5 at bats. He swung at ball after ball.

    • Mrsb loves the Nats - May 15, 2015 at 2:52 AM

Have to wonder if that arm is bothering him after hbp yesterday.

      • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 8:55 AM

That would make a difference in struck balls. However he was swinging at pitches not in the zone. Probably as many last night, as he had swung at the rest of the month of May. I don’t see how the HBP would effect nit identifying a strike.

  154. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:51 AM

Harper has proofed it is easy to take a ball.

  155. manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 2:52 AM

    Thanks Fister. Night all.

  156. Ghost of Steve M. - May 15, 2015 at 3:03 AM

    Friday is a new day.

  157. nattygoats - May 15, 2015 at 4:49 AM

Starting pitching is something to worry about. Frankly it stinks

    • manassasnatsfan - May 15, 2015 at 8:56 AM

      Presently.

The baseball card says it won’t over time.

We will still be in first soon.

  158. rlndtln - May 15, 2015 at 8:47 AM

Treinen is going to be a good starting pitcher.
