Game 23: Nats at Mets

Apr 30, 2015, 3:53 PM EST

USA Today Sports Images

The Nationals open a big, 4-game series in New York tonight against the first-place Mets, and they’ll have their starting third baseman back in the lineup. No, not Anthony Rendon, who is still waiting to resume his rehab assignment with Class AA Harrisburg. Yunel Escobar returns after missing two games with a left hand injury suffered when Atlanta’s Andrelton Simmons slid late and hard into him Monday night.

Escobar will bat second, which allows Matt Williams to move Ian Desmond down to the 7-spot. Perhaps that will take some pressure off the slumping Desmond (0 for his last 23). Danny Espinosa, meanwhile, gets the start at second base over Dan Uggla.

It’s a good pitching matchup in the opener, with Stephen Strasburg facing Jacob deGrom, the appetizer before tomorrow’s marquee matchup of Max Scherzer vs. Matt Harvey. Unfortunately I’m not in New York for the series, but please keep up the conversation here as always, and be sure to check back all weekend for analysis and news from Chase and me…

    Esco is back. Uggla strengthens the bench.

    • adcwonk - Apr 30, 2015 at 4:21 PM

      + 16 !!

      • adcwonk - Apr 30, 2015 at 4:26 PM

        (Well, except, I think Ian could use a day off — he hasn’t missed a game all season, he’s gone 0-for-23, etc. At least he’s out of the #2 hole)

      • drazthegr8 - Apr 30, 2015 at 4:33 PM

        Yeah, I would have given Desi the day off considering how hot Uggla is. Oh well.

      • natsdial8 - Apr 30, 2015 at 4:42 PM

        Seems like Ian could use a break –

      • adcwonk - Apr 30, 2015 at 5:18 PM

        You owe me a beer!

      • Sec 3, My Sofa - Apr 30, 2015 at 4:50 PM

        Yeah, I would have given Desi the day off considering how hot Uggla is. Oh well.

        If only to find out if Uggla is actually “hot” or just motivated by being booed in Atlanta.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:01 PM

        Yep, been saying for days that Desi needs a “rest” day especially with a suddenly en fuego Dan U.

    • natsfan1a - Apr 30, 2015 at 4:33 PM

      Great!

      • natsfan1a - Apr 30, 2015 at 4:34 PM

        Er, great to have Esco back, that is. (These nesting posts get me all confused.)

  2. Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 3:55 PM

    “EliasSports: Today: 3rd time ever that former No. 1 pick (Strasburg) faces reigning Rookie of the Year (deGrom) “

    • jd - Apr 30, 2015 at 4:15 PM

      I think it’s time Stras pitches the way he did against Philly on a consistant basis. This Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde routine has to stop if he’s gonna be a top of the rotation stud.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 4:42 PM

        It’s frustrating. Not the model of consistency.

    • adcwonk - Apr 30, 2015 at 4:26 PM

      And the prior times were . . . ?

      😉

  3. natsjackinfl - Apr 30, 2015 at 4:15 PM

    You can almost smell a Solis-Duda matchup sometime soon.

    • natsjackinfl - Apr 30, 2015 at 4:16 PM

      Of course the Nats may want to try Solis on Granderson first.

    • jd - Apr 30, 2015 at 4:16 PM

      We’ll just have to see if MW has enough faith in Solis to put him any high lev situations.

      • Section 222 - Apr 30, 2015 at 4:46 PM

        Not holding my breath on that. He’s got Thornton and Grace first. I expect Sammy is the mop up or innings eater guy for now.

      • masterfishkeeper - Apr 30, 2015 at 4:52 PM

        Section 222, you nailed it. Last night, Charlie and Dave said the reason Solis did not pitch mop up was because he’s the long relief option after Roark went so long Tuesday.

  4. Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 4:49 PM

    SS Wilmer Difo has been promoted from Single-A Potomac to Double-A Harrisburg, P-Nats just announced. #Nats

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 4:51 PM

      I said the end of June after the High-A All Star game he’d be promoted. This is fast tracked and should mean Trea Turner and Difo will be the Harrisburg middle infielders when Turner arrives.

      • masterfishkeeper - Apr 30, 2015 at 4:53 PM

        That’s great news. Hope he does well in AA.

      • drazthegr8 - Apr 30, 2015 at 4:56 PM

        Difo is getting close…

        The way Rizzo calls guys up from AA and considering Difo is on the 40 man, I think we may see Difo this year.

      • jd - Apr 30, 2015 at 5:16 PM

        Big step forward. It’s not an easy step as evidenced by how Turner is scuffling at San Antonio. Let’s see how well these 2 do at AA before we have them in DC. It could still be a little while before they are ready.

      • Sec 3, My Sofa - Apr 30, 2015 at 5:22 PM

        Who has Rizzo called up from AA he wasn’t more or less forced to by injuries or other roster issues? I’d be surprised if they gave away an option year just for the heck of it.

        OTOH, Rizzo may indeed be forced to, but it’ll have to be really forced, IMO. We’ll see.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:55 PM

        Bryce Harper, but who’s saying he’s calling him up?

    • nats106 - Apr 30, 2015 at 4:52 PM

      Glad I got the chance to see him at Potomac when I did!

      • Steady Eddie - Apr 30, 2015 at 5:02 PM

        You can see him play this coming weekend when the Senators play at the Bowie Baysox. I’m going Saturday night. If you go tomorrow night you can see Joe Ross start for the HNats; unfortunately the starter on Saturday is Brian Rauh of the 21.60 ERA (though that just meant he got bombed in his one start so far).

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 5:11 PM

        Difo had an OPS of over .900 at Potomac and it’s an encouraging start after how he did in Spring Training.

  5. nats106 - Apr 30, 2015 at 4:53 PM

    I’ll be disappointed in anything less than a 13 spot in tonight’s game. (Uh, by the Nationals, of course)

  6. rlndtln - Apr 30, 2015 at 4:57 PM

    Any injury report

    • jd - Apr 30, 2015 at 5:13 PM

      You know in hockey they just tell you ‘upper body’ or ‘lowe body’ injury and they give details out as willingly as the KGB. Baseball fans want minute by minute injury play by play, muscle by muscle, bone by bone.

      Bottom line,

      Relax, they’ll tell you when there’s something to say. The news won’t make the player return sooner or later than he would have otherwise.

    • Sec 3, My Sofa - Apr 30, 2015 at 5:18 PM

      Harrisburg doesn’t play tonight, so Rendon is off in any event. I wonder if he’s staying down there for his bobblehead nights May 9?

      Naah.

  7. Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 5:29 PM

    Rendon will be back in the lineup tomorrow if he feels good. Took BP and fielding drills today.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 5:32 PM

      “@Nationals: #Nats Mgr Matt Williams said Anthony Rendon went thru full workout today. If he continues to feel good, could return to rehab assign. tmrw.”

  9. Tyler Babip - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:00 PM

    I just noticed that the one pitcher is almost exactly a month older than the other. But not in the order I expected:

    De Grom: July 19, 1988
    Stephen Strasburg: August 20, 1988

  10. Mrsb loves the Nats - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:01 PM

    Psyched about this game… been waiting for it all day… hope everyone had a great day.

    Here’s to a Nats win. Lets do this!

  11. tcostant - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:09 PM

    How could you bench Uggla, play him while he’s hot. Anywhere

  12. Mrsb loves the Nats - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:14 PM

    Are you frickin kidding me… SO. FRICKIN CLOSE FOR MY MAN SPAN….

  13. Mrsb loves the Nats - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:28 PM

    Come on SS… get that DP

  14. Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:28 PM

    Strasburg missing spots. Had Duda set-up and missed the corner trying to be too fine.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:29 PM

      Great pitch on strike 3 to Cuddyer!

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:32 PM

        Strasburg gets lucky BABIP on that line drive from Murphy…….whew!

    Anybody watching able to fill in what I can’t see on Gameday, I’d be much obliged.

    Ss fb is electric tonight…

  17. rlndtln - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:33 PM

    Too many pitches

    • Sec 3, My Sofa - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:36 PM

      It’s like Mozart. “Too many notes!”

      • exposremains - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:51 PM

        The difference is that Mozart was good.

  18. Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:36 PM

    Bryce has to lay off the fastball at his shoulders. That was too reminiscent of another guy who used to swing at those out of his shoes.

  19. Mrsb loves the Nats - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:37 PM

    Ohhh…. Ryan looked silly….

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:42 PM

      They are killing him outside. And yes, they are making him look silly.

    • nattygoats - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:55 PM

      Ryan is silly. He and Desi are hitting liabilities.

  20. Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:38 PM

    Mets scouting report on Bryce and RZim seems apparent. K’d Bryce on high heat and RZim on outside edge which he can’t reach.

  21. Mrsb loves the Nats - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:39 PM

    Babip hit Ramos too…

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:42 PM

      Sure did, he crushed it. If he had a little more lift on that it’s a HR.

  22. Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:45 PM

    Good observation by FP on Span positioning. I’d rather him play back and protect against a XBH

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:46 PM

      And there you go. Should have been a single and instead it splits the gap for a double.

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:51 PM

        And now the runner who was on 2nd scores on a single. Awful, 2 runs already and Strasburg’s pitch count is ridiculous.

  23. Mrsb loves the Nats - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:47 PM

    Is it me or does SS seem kind of hesistant… where is the pitcher that was blowing stuff past the Phillies…

  24. rlndtln - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:48 PM

    Where is the sharp curveball that Stras used to finish off a batter.He has become just above average starter.He will have over 50 pitches if he gets thru this inning.

    • exposremains - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:56 PM

      Nobody wants to say it but Strasburg was never the same after his injury. He lost the fire he had the first year, the amazing curvevall and the 99 mph fastball. He used to look scary on the mound now he just look surprise or confuse.

  25. Mrsb loves the Nats - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:49 PM

    44+ in the 2nd inning…. oh boy…

  26. Mrsb loves the Nats - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:51 PM

    His stuff looks like it’s kinda up….

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:52 PM

      Fastball looks flat to me. These guys are hitting it hard.

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:54 PM

        It’s like they just started sitting on it… where is the command…

        Sigh, come on offense….

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:56 PM

        He has velo and I think he’s over-cooking it and it’s flattening. MLB hitters can hit it—clearly.

        2-0 deficit and a high pitch count. Sigh.

      • Mrsb loves the Nats - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:55 PM

        He may need to stop throwing that change up….

      • Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:58 PM

        He’s trying to be too fine and needs to rely on location and movement more than velo. Save the velo for 0-2 when you go high heat. It’s just misguided in my opinion as I’ve stated before.

  27. rlndtln - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:51 PM

    long night coming.over 50 now.

  28. nattygoats - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:53 PM

    Best rotation in the league? LMAO. I’m sick of Stras. Dump him

    • manassasnatsfan - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:42 PM

      They are the best, just not pitching like it. I thought you plan start cheering for us nit against us.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:58 PM

      He sure settled down and pitched great the last 3 innings.

  29. Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:54 PM

    That Span positioning probably cost the Nats a run. Much too shallow vs Plawecki. Glad FP pointed that out as it’s usually me saying something.

  30. rlndtln - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:55 PM

    We will never resign him after next year.doubt he will get that big contract.

  31. Eric - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:55 PM

    That’s a LOT of pitches Stras. Making me nervous!

  32. nattygoats - Apr 30, 2015 at 7:57 PM

    Nats pitchers ( minus Max) seem lazy and unfocused. Almost like it’s too much effort to throw anything but a bel high FB

    • Eric - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:00 PM

      Actually, Stras is throwing everything at 95-96…kinda wonder if he’s just overthrowing everything.

  33. Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:02 PM

    On the Granderson single, those are the grounders that Danny has to get to. That’s what frustrates me. It wasn’t smashed.

  34. Eric - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:03 PM

    Seems like his velocity is starting to vary more…fingers crossed.

  35. rlndtln - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:03 PM

    Stay close and we will get this guy.

  36. Eric - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:05 PM

    Seems like maybe his change up is getting some life back…? Hard to tell on at bat, but seems to be coming in lower…

  37. Mrsb loves the Nats - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:06 PM

    Nice quick efficient inning…. needed that…

  38. conatsguy - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:06 PM

    OK

    Good inning by Stras.

  39. nattygoats - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:06 PM

    Call it a hunch. But I don’t see 13 runs tonight. That’s ok we got the last two. Like Meatloaf said. Two outta three ain’t bad.

  40. Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:06 PM

    That’s what I’m talking about. Throw the high heat in a 2 strike count and hope they swing through it. No reason to over throw to nibble on the edge and miss locations.

  41. Eric - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:07 PM

    That’s better Stras!

    Guess he stopped “being lazy” b/w innings 😉

    • Joe Seamhead - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:13 PM

      That whole lazy statement was one of a series of lame statements.

  42. Mrsb loves the Nats - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:10 PM

    Wait… is this really the 2nd time thru the order…

  43. Eric - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:13 PM

    PHEW!

    CAPITALIZE!!!

    • Eric - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:15 PM

      That’s what I’m talking about!

  44. Mrsb loves the Nats - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:13 PM

    That’s the break we need…

    MAKE THEM PAY!!!!

  45. conatsguy - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:13 PM

    Wow

    Make it hurt

  46. Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:14 PM

    Flores boots a tailor made doubleplay. Thank you. Now lets see if the Nats make them pay dearly!

    LoWs should kill and add an error to that and this should hurt them where it counts!

    • natinalsgo aka Gonats - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:24 PM

      Nats couldn’t capitalize early in the season. That was clutch. A Werth hit and some productive outs. While that had the makings of a 5 run inning, 3 works.

  47. Mrsb loves the Nats - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:15 PM

    Be nice for jayson to get it…. and get it good…

    • Mrsb loves the Nats - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:19 PM

      I aint Ghost…. but I thought it was.. 🙂

      • natinalsgo aka Gonats - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:21 PM

        I aint either but I thought deGrom was rattled and was nibbling and missed everything.

    • Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:22 PM

      3-0 was. He wanted no piece of him at that point.

  55. Mrsb loves the Nats - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:18 PM

    Dang…. was watching the draft…. how did we score 3?

    • Eric - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:23 PM

      Werth single brought in Span, Harper walk loaded ’em, Zim sac fly, Ramos fielder’s choose for 3.

    • ehay2k - May 1, 2015 at 8:23 AM

      -1. Why watch the lottery balls get picked if you don’t have a ticket.

  64. rlndtln - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:21 PM

    Just what I predicted

  65. Mrsb loves the Nats - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:22 PM

  66. conatsguy - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:22 PM

    Oh hum… Another comeback inning 🙂

  67. Eric - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:26 PM

    Have visual now…heater seems to be diving pretty nicely…curve looking sharp…change up definitely kind of a loping cork screw though.

  68. manassasnatsfan - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:26 PM

    Got in the house to see error and deGrom pitched just like Stras does after an error.

    What is with our starters lately? The last 10 days way to many early runs. We are suppose to be great at starting. This is the 5th round through the rotation.

    Desmind 25 straight outs.

  69. Eric - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:28 PM

    EXCELLENT,

    Why not just lay off the change while your heater and curve are playing so well?

  70. Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:28 PM

    Look at that up and in fastball on Plawicki. That’s the Strasburg we need!!!

  71. Joe Seamhead - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:29 PM

    All things considered? One of Stephen Strasburg’s best innings in recent memory.

  72. conatsguy - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:30 PM

    Glad we didn’t dump him after the second inning….

    • Eric - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:32 PM

      Lol!

  73. Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:31 PM

    Cuddyer is a poor fielder. Have to take advantage of him. Espinosa almost did.

  74. Eric - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:38 PM

    ~~~scary~~~
  75. Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:39 PM
    Ryan Zimmerman probably said to Granderson “I know how you feel”. Cold air not helping long balls.
  76. Joe Seamhead - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:41 PM
    All things considered? Two of the best innings by Stephen Strasburg in recent memory. Maybe since his rookie year.
    • Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:46 PM
      He threw some purpose pitches in succession to get to his K pitch and it’s brilliant. Why isn’t he like that more often. Frustrating.
  77. Eric - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:41 PM
    Nice job Stras.
    Bet he was missing his change up against Lagares there.
  78. manassasnatsfan - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:41 PM
    Tack on a couple runs
  79. Eric - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:48 PM
    YES!
  80. Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:48 PM
    RISP!!!! RZim. Glad you got the single on it.
    • natinalsgo aka Gonats - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:49 PM
      Baseball is a funny game. If Harper is on 1st they are pinched up the middle for a GIDP and instead they are set wide and RZim sends a 16 bouncer up the middle.
      • Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:50 PM
        Yes, BABIP luck the Nats didn’t have they are getting.
      • Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:53 PM
        Let me say that coherently. Nats had no BABIP luck during the losing streak and now they are getting the BABIP turning their way.
  81. conatsguy - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:48 PM
    nice.. Harp and Zim
    • Joe Seamhead - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:51 PM
      And Wilson!
  82. manassasnatsfan - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:48 PM
    I played Harper and RZim on my draft king game tonight.
  83. natslive - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:49 PM
    Buffalo!
  84. Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:49 PM
    Buffalo RISP!!!!
    I’m cryin heah! It’s beautiful!
  87. Eric - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:52 PM
    OK, Desi, follow their lead. Nice and easy.
    • manassasnatsfan - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:54 PM
      Desi 0 for his last 25 but 3 walks in that time now
    • Eric - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:59 PM
      Oh well…disappointing, but can’t complain…that was very close even with a perfect throw.
      Good for Espi with the near sac fly!
  88. manassasnatsfan - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:53 PM
    Actually double checked played Ramos too
  89. Mrsb loves the Nats - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:53 PM
    Watched the draft…. and missed everything… whooppp hoo Nats….
    • manassasnatsfan - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:56 PM
      Therror woke us up.
      Espi did your favorite after a walk swung at first pitch.
  90. Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:55 PM
    Desi swinging for 500 again in the 2-0 count. Let’s see what he does 3-1. Yep, misses the 3-1. Now 3-2. Come on Desi. All right, got a walk.
    • manassasnatsfan - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:58 PM
      Hitting coaches have never been able to teach him .
      I had no problem with sending Zim had to perfect throw, or he had to bust his ass a little more. But he would hurt himself if busted
      • Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:59 PM
        With Strasburg on deck he has to send him.
  91. Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 8:58 PM
    Crud. On target throw. Was hoping the tag was late.
    • manassasnatsfan - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:36 PM
      Actually he was safe. My TV when I place on slow speed shows 120 images per second. His foot hit the plate 2 images before the tag. Or 1/60th of a second. If I have TV that can slow down this much, how MLB calls so many inconclusive calls.
      Except for possibly missing the tag, I can always tell if the runner beats a ball or tag. Never seen a tie yet. Seen a handful of 1 image plays.
      • Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:38 PM
        I think you’re right but probably doesn’t get overturned.
      • manassasnatsfan - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:44 PM
        I know won’t overturn. I watch about 20 games a week. The call has to be basically 4 images or more wrong for them to over turn it. Do kike I do okay one image at a time. No okay is in doubt. I can tell which happened first by one image at a time. Not sure why I have better equipment than MLB does.
  92. Eric - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:00 PM
    Oh well…disappointing, but can’t complain…that was very close even with a perfect throw.
    Good for Espi with the near sac fly!
  93. Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:02 PM
    I hope Strasburg has a GIDP to dial up on Murphy in his back pocket.
    • Eric - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:05 PM
      Batter++
      Pitcher++
  94. Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:03 PM
    Good, get the GIDP here. Smart for Bryce to hit the cut-off man.
  95. Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:05 PM
    Aaron Barrett coming in for a stopper spot.
  96. Mrsb loves the Nats - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:05 PM
    SS didn’t want to come out…. good…. I would have left him in, personally….
    • Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:07 PM
      I would have for just Campbell as it’s a good righty/righty. Let’s hope this works out for the Nats.
  97. Joe Seamhead - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:05 PM
    Even if this works out, I don’t agree with yanking Strasburg here.
    • Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:09 PM
      MW amazes me. If he did this early in the season when pitchers were building up arm strength, the Nats record would look different.
      • Eric - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:11 PM
        Lose and learn?
      • Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:22 PM
        It just takes him a while to adjust. He baffles me and I say that about him and I like MW.
  98. Eric - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:10 PM
    I agree with FP: I think pulling Stras was a good call…maybe one more batter would’ve been OK, but tying run at the plate and 100 pitches in?
    • Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:11 PM
      It worked out and MW looks like a genius. That’s how it should work.
  99. Mrsb loves the Nats - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:10 PM
    I would send Barrett back out for the 7th…
  100. conatsguy - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:10 PM
    Nice move MW… Worked out OK.
  101. Joe Seamhead - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:11 PM
    Worked out. Barely, but worked out. Jayson looked like he had a tough time picking the ball up off the bat.
  102. Joe Seamhead - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:12 PM
    Uh-oh. span down.
  103. Eric - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:13 PM
    Oh no…please tell me Span didn’t do anything serious…
  104. Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:14 PM
    MW is definitely throwing changeups. A week ago he sends Barrett out there for the 7th.
    • natinalsgo aka Gonats - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:16 PM
      Made more sense since it wasn’t a double switch and Barrett would have led off the inning.
  105. rlndtln - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:14 PM
    what happened to Span?I was out for awhile
    • natinalsgo aka Gonats - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:15 PM
      Leg or oblique seemed to lock up on him. He grimaced a little but ran ok in his last AB.
  106. Mrsb loves the Nats - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:14 PM
    What the hell happened to Span??????
    • Joe Seamhead - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:18 PM
      No word, other than he grimaced as he left the box on his last at bat. Tweak the groin?
    • natinalsgo aka Gonats - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:18 PM
      He had that surgery on the core muscles. With all that playing he has done and the twisting and turning you never know.
      Hopefully it was bad tuna for lunch.
      • manassasnatsfan - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:49 PM
        Hopefully just a tweak. Taylor will give him a day off Saturday against Niese
  110. Mrsb loves the Nats - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:18 PM
    Glad Escobar is hitting 2nd… wonder if he stays at 2nd when Rendon comes back or does Escobar go to 6th, maybe…
  111. Eric - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:20 PM
    Bummer Werth….seems like he’s getting the bat to the ball better, just not on the right plane.
    • Joe Seamhead - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:23 PM
      Well, I seem to remember him getting an RBI hit earlier tonight.
      • Eric - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:31 PM
        Not meant to be a critique, more so saying he’s close. A liner and two pop ups…and on both pop ups his timing seemed to be pretty good…
      • Joe Seamhead - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:48 PM
        Sorry, Eric. I guess I had a sensitive response after all of the “Werthless” comments for the past week by some of the clowns to the left of me and jokers to the right!
      • Eric - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:53 PM
        There are exceedingly few outcomes for Wertg’s career that would push me to a place like that! He’s a cornerstone, imo.
      • Eric - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:54 PM
        PS – it’s all good! No apology necessary.
  112. conatsguy - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:22 PM
  113. Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:24 PM
    Now MW brings in Solis. OK, I’m zipping my lips.
    • Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:29 PM
      Wow! MW is a frickin genius tonight and last night and the night before.
  114. natsjackinfl - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:26 PM
    Solis in for mop up, long man duty, huh?
    • Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:29 PM
      Exactly. 9 run lead last night and he doesn’t bring him in. Now he gets a HOLD situation for his 1st appearance. So far so good.
      • Sec 3, My Sofa - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:33 PM
        I’m guessing Matty doesn’t care how he pitches with a nine-run lead, he wants to know how he pitches in a close game. If he can’t pitch in a close game, what use is he? Might as well find out.
      • Ghost of Steve M. - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:36 PM
        I disagree. This game means too much. You ease him in. It worked out so it’s fine.
    • Joe Seamhead - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:32 PM
      Who says he’s here for that? Is this mop up? Long man duty? It looks like set up time to me.
    • knoxvillenat - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:36 PM
      So does Solis come back out for the 8th or does Williams go to another reliever?
      • knoxvillenat - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:37 PM
        I think Carp just answered my question. Looks like Matt Thornton will come into the game.
    • Section 222 - Apr 30, 2015 at 9:49 PM
    Nice little run going – in spite of bottom 4 of order going 1-14 we put together a fairly easy win –
      When one area doesn’t produce, another picks ’em up! The sign of a good team.
      While the bottom four were going 1-14, the 2-3-4-5 spots went 9-18 (!!).
      Didn’t know that Solis threw at 96-97. Rizzo must have a lefty farm somewhwere???
